Cardinals training camp: Right guard is position to watch but isn't big position battle
The Arizona Cardinals have a number of notable position battles as they have begun training camp. Throughout the offseason, one particular position has had the attention. But as camp has begun, it appears that this job is not as competitive as we thought it would be.
That would be the right guard position.
The Cardinals have not brought back guard Will Hernandez, who had started at right guard for the last three seasons and tore his ACL last year in Week 5. 2024 third-round pick Isaiah Adams finished the season starting the final five games at right guard, but then the Cardinals signed Royce Newman, who has 24 career starts, drafted Hayden Conner in the sixth round and still have 2023 fourth-round pick Jon Gaines.
While it was believed that there would be a competition for the starting job, but that hasn't been the case.
Adams has been running with the first team since the spring, a trend that the Cardinals have had the last two years for their offensive line. When the left guard job was not certain heading into the last two offseasons, Elijah Wilkinson ran with the first team in the spring and was the starter, while last year, the same happened with Evan Brown.
Naturally, there will still be competition, but as things stand right now as camp begins, Adams will have the job unless he gets hurt or loses it.
His performance in camp and the preseason is certainly something to watch, but right guard is not one of their key position battles.

Washington Commanders WR Oozing Confidence Ahead of 2025 Season
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. During the offseason, the Washington Commanders made notable upgrades on the offensive end to help propel Jayden Daniels towards stardom. Though one has been met with some negative feedback, the young QB's newest weapon is eager to silence his critics. After spending the first six years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, Deebo Samuel found himself on the move this offseason. He was dealt to the Commanders, landing on another budding contender in the NFC. Earlier in his career, Samuel was viewed as one of the most dynamic wideouts in the NFL. However, the narrative around him has changed in recent years. Having heard all the outside noise for months now, the veteran wideout is confident he can get his career back on track in 2025. More Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Before being traded, Samuel saw his production take a hit in 2024. On top of this, he's had to deal with countless people in and around the league commenting on his physical appearance. Samuel didn't let any of this get to him and instead used it as a source of motivation. During OTAs, clips of Samuel went viral after he was seen jogging while running routes. This led to incessant chatter about him being out of shape. In the weeks leading up to training camp, Samuel worked hard to prove that wasn't the case. While speaking with Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, Samuel opened up on where his head is at heading into his first year in Washington. After all the success the Commanders had last season, he's eager to come in ready to help get them over the hump. "Had to take it to another level as far as conditioning and training," Samuel said. "My mindset is to come back, be in the best shape, be the best version of myself to take that extra step. They were in the NFC Championship last year, but last year is last year." With things between Terry McLaurin and the front office still ongoing, there's no telling what his status will be come Week 1. This leaves Samuel as the guy to fill the void and be Daniels' top option to start the year. Based on his recent remarks, it seems Samuel is ready to take on any role the Commanders throw his way. Odell Beckham Jr Address Viral Rumor That He is Retiring
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Former Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, and New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has not played a snap of football since he was released by the Dolphins on December 13. Despite being waived, no team picked the former star receiver up. More news: Jon Gruden Wastes No Time Picking the Best Current NFL Quarterback Apparently, a viral rumor by a fake sports media person indicated that Beckham was set to retire from the NFL. Now, the former Pro Bowler has addressed those rumors on social media. Odell Beckham #13 of the New York Giants warms up prior to the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on November 25, 2018 in Philadelphia, news: Rams' Matthew Stafford Not Spotted at Practice Amid Injury Concerns Beckham did not need to say much, and that is the route he took with his indication that he plans to continue to play in the NFL. His last foray into playing was appearing in nine games, catching nine balls for 55 yards. Beckham was supposed to be a solid contributor for the Dolphins, but an unspecified injury led to his missing a good amount of the regular season. Whatever the injury was may have impacted the 2024 season. Beckham is presumably healed and could be a solid pickup for teams needing a third or fourth receiver to work in rotation. Though Beckham was once viewed as the top receiver in the game, he has since seen his production fall dramatically between the 2020 and 24 seasons. Still, there are plenty of players who get reinvigorated, and Beckham could easily find himself on a new team by the time the regular season begins. Teams are currently evaluating their rosters, and there is a need for a receiver; the former Dolphins pass-catcher could get a new gig. Beckham might also be holding out to potentially land on a contender, so that his final season or seasons could be chasing another Super Bowl win. The receiver joined the Rams during the 2021 season, when the team took it all. During his time with the Rams, he secured 305 yards and five touchdowns. He split the 2021 season with the Browns, where he picked up 232 receiving yards. There is no telling where Beckham may end up in 2025, but the social media post going viral and his response are sure to reach the ears and eyes of general managers in the NFL. Peyton Manning Speaks Glowingly About Eagles' Jalen Hurts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Jalen Hurts has plenty of critics, but the NFL legend Peyton Manning is not one of them. Recently, the Hall of Famer discussed the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback on the 'PFF Podcast' with Cris Collinsworth. Manning, a two-time Super Bowl Champion, revealed that Hurts has steady communication with him. "He calls me a lot and asks me lots of questions," Manning said, via 94WIP. "They actually run a lot of plays that we used to run. [Nick] Sirianni, to Frank Reich, to Tom Moore, sort of that chain. And he calls me with very specific questions about certain plays. So he's a student of the game." Since entering the NFL as a second-round pick in 2020, Hurts has garnered plenty of praise for his approach. Even as a rookie, the young quarterback was winning over his teammates with his demeanor and leadership. It took just half a season before Hurts was under center for Philadelphia as the starter. By his second season, Hurts was the clear-cut franchise quarterback. Since then, he's been to two Super Bowls, and recently won his first, getting crowned the game's MVP right after. Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up prior to the NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Lincoln Financial Field on August 7, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Eagles defeated the Bengals 34-27. More"He's played so well in both of the Super Bowls, but I like the way he goes about it," Manning admitted. Hurts might be one of the more versatile players at the position, making plays on the ground and in the air. He can wear many hats as a QB, but Manning appreciates the veteran's "appreciation of the cerebral part of the game." "He squats 600 pounds, he can run over guys, he can throw it a mile, but his appreciation of the cerebral part of the game is what is impressive to me and how he's taken his game to the next level, and I think the sky is the limit for this guy," Manning finished. During the 2022 season, Hurts led the Eagles to a 14-1 record as he passed for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions while producing 784 yards on the ground and scoring 10 touchdowns. He was an MVP candidate and appeared in his first Super Bowl. While the Eagles didn't get back into the big game the following year, Hurts threw for a career-high 3,858 yards and 23 touchdowns. His struggles with turnovers stood out. This past season, Hurts threw under 400 times for just the second time in his career. He produced 2,903 yards during the regular season. Although he threw for just 18 touchdowns, he turned the ball over on the ground and in the air just 10 times. While taking care of the ball, the Eagles finished the year with a 12-3 record. They went on to win their second NFC title with Hurts at the helm and finished on top with a Super Bowl victory. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
