Rihanna on donning multiple hats in Smurfs: 'It was invigorating and exciting'
Shedding light on playing multiple roles in the drama, Rihanna called it equally thrilling and challenging.
Speaking during the global promotions, the 'Battleship' actress talked about her experience of being a part of the movie.
"It was invigorating and exciting for me to not only embody a character but also bring my musical life into the mix. We worked with music producers and choreographers whose work I admire. To put those two worlds together was a win-win for everyone. It pushed us all to challenge our artistry", Rihanna added.

She further revealed that during her childhood in Barbados, "Smurfs" was a part of her routine. The 'Ocean's 8' actress went on to share, "So many mornings, I woke up long before I was supposed to get ready for school just to get that dose of Smurfs."
Rihanna added that she has related a lot to the character of Smurfette and what she stands for. "First of all, I have always loved makeup and hair. We all know that. And she's an esthetician. She's also a powerful leader, independent, strong, beautiful, sassy, witty, and very empathetic. I was super-inspired by all of that. I think she loves music too and her favorite genres are hip-hop, reggae, Afrobeats, ballads, and house. That's Smurfette. She needs options," she said.

Rihanna took inspiration for her character from some real-life women, plucking little things from each of them.
"They are all so different in personality, tone, and attitude, but I feel like these are the women who are with me daily. Smurfette needed to come from all of us," she concluded.
"The Smurfs" will be reaching India on July 18th. The movie will be available in both English and Hindi.

Actress Vidya Balan is getting nostalgic as her Hindi debut film 'Parineeta' is set to re-release in cinemas in 8K restored print. Taking a leaf from the past, the actress said that she always used to crack up when the director of the film Pradeep Sarkar acted out scenes to her particularly the walk of her character. The film has been restored by Prasad Film Labs, bringing its rich visuals and evocative storytelling back to life for a new generation. A new trailer of the film has also been unveiled, celebrating the film's timeless appeal, beauty, soulful music, and the nostalgic elegance of an era. Talking about the new trailer, Vidya Balan said, 'I remember listening to 'Piyu Bole' for the first time; even then, I knew it was something special. There was a softness to it, a kind of innocence that I guess mirrored how I was feeling at the time, new, unsure, and quietly hopeful. Watching the trailer now, that melody brought back memories... the shooting of the scenes with (Dada) Pradeep Da screaming instructions from behind the monitor and how he'd act out moments and expect us to follow. His walk as a woman in my scenes always cracked me up, I'd be like, 'Dada, you don't need to teach me how to walk' (laughs)'. 'I guess, I wasn't aware of the camera, I was just living those moments. I truly couldn't have asked for a more beautiful debut. That kind of purity, the magic of a 1st Uff, 'Parineeta' is full of that because it marks the 1st for many of us, and that's something I'll always hold close', she added. Talking about the film, Sanjay Dutt said, 'Girish was my first Bengali character, and I was very happy to play it. I love Bengali culture. Girish was a quiet guy, but there's a lot going on underneath, and I really connected with that. Pradeep Dada was solid; he was always there to guide me through every beat of the script. I love him and miss him. I was happy that Vinod offered me the film, as I have had a very successful association with him'. 'He is family. Some scenes might look simple now, but they weren't easy at all. Watching the trailer today brought everything back twenty years later. Parineeta was never just another film for me. It was made with a lot of heart and a lot of love, and that's why even two decades on it has a special place in everyone's heart', he added. The restored version of 'Parineeta' will be re-released in select PVR INOX cinemas across India on Aug.29, 2025. The National Award-winning actress aspired to a career in film from a young age and had her first acting role in the sitcom Hum Paanch. King Khan gets his due
India's National Film Awards have lost their sheen in recent years but when Shah Rukh Khan, often called the Badshah of Bollywood, is adjudged the best actor by a jury presided over by his Swades director Ashutosh Gowariker, can his fans stay calm? Not a chance in hell because the recognition has not come a day too soon. The long overdue honour for SRK, one of India's most popular movie actors with a fan following that straddles the globe, has come after several snubs and near-misses in the past. He has won the award this year for a double role in Atlee's Jawan, one of the highest grossing films ever in the history of Indian cinema. The film cast him as a lookalike pair of father and son who take on a world where evil is rife. The principal role was that of Azad, a women's prison jailer who becomes a vigilante against corruption and assembles a team of inmates to wage war on those responsible for duping the nation. The same year saw Shah Rukh Khan make a comeback (after a long hiatus) to the big screen with Pathaan, a high-voltage espionage thriller that, like Jawan, vindicated that he is still a box-office dynamite. The super-success of Pathaan and Jawan, both of which saw the actor don the persona of an action-hero, ended a lull in his career. Films like Fan (2016), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) and Zero (2018) underperformed. Shah Rukh took a break before returning with a massive bang. File/AP Although he has won the national award for an action-oriented role of an anti-corruption and pro-social harmony crusader, the star's biggest contribution to Hindi cinema has been his steadfast adherence to a gentle, romantic, non-macho code that has earned him phenomenal adulation from female fans of Hindi cinema. Consider the handful of other roles for which he should have won the National Award and it will be easy to see that no Bollywood A-lister has done as much as Shah Rukh Khan to yank Hindi popular cinema away from the industry's obsession with abrasive, vengeful, often toxic, masculinity. He brought gentility and poise to Bollywood movies. In 2004, he starred in Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades as NASA engineer Mohan Bhargav who returns to his homeland with the intention of making a difference to the lives of people. The National Award for Best Actor eluded him. It somewhat bafflingly went to Saif Ali Khan for the romantic drama Hum Tum. The very next year, Shah Rukh Khan played the male lead in the offbeat Paheli, directed by Amol Palekar who adapted the film from a Rajasthani story by Vijayadan Detha. Paheli, co-starring Rani Mukherji as a village woman whose husband goes away for work and is visited by a ghost disguised as her husband, travelled to international film festivals but sank at the box office. While the lead actor's performance drew positive critical notices, Paheli drew a blank at the National Awards but for a prize for Shreya Ghoshal in the Best Female Playback Singer category. In 2007, Shah Rukh was once again a frontrunner for the award. He played Kabir Khan, a disgraced hockey coach who makes a comeback to groom the Indian women's team into a fighting fit unit, in Chak De! India, produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shimit Amin. Like he had done in Swades, he broke away from his romantic hero moorings and fleshed out a relatable man steeped in reality. While the film itself bagged the National Award for the 'best film providing wholesome entertainment', the lead actor was overlooked by a jury headed by filmmaker Sai Paranjpye. The Best Actor National Award that year went (and not undeservedly) to Prakash Raj for Priyadarshan's Tamil-language film Kanchivaram. Karan Johar's 2010 film, My Name is Khan, had Shahrukh Khan in the role of Rizwan Khan, a man with Asperger's Syndrome. The actor excelled and delivered a moving performance that still ranks among his best. He was tipped to take home the elusive Best Actor Prize at the National Awards but was beaten to it by none other than Amitabh Bachchan, who won for Paa, in which he played a child with progeria. The long wait has finally ended. Shah Rukh debuted over three decades ago in Deewana. By the time the 1990s ended, he was already Bollywood's biggest star, a man who could do no wrong. In 1992, the year of his debut, he also had the much-loved Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. The following year, he was the star of Abbas-Mustan's Baazigar and Yash Chopra's Darr. There was no looking back from there on for the actor. Shah Rukh Khan went on to feature within the next few years in such runaway hits as Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Pardes and Dil To Pagal Hai. Given the enormity of his popularity and his status as the brightest luminary of contemporary Hindi cinema, the Best Actor National Award, even if it is only the icing on an already puffy cake, is vindication of his enduring power as an entertainer.

TV series 'Wednesday' returns with family and female-focused Season 2
Actress Jenna Ortega and the creators of the hit Netflix series "Wednesday" are hoping to surpass expectations as the show returns to screens after almost three years. The dark fantasy series' first season, which premiered in November 2022, ranks as Netflix's most popular English-language show of all time, with more than 252 million views in the first 91 days of release. As well as reprising the titular role, Ortega, 22, took on executive producer duties for the new season. Filmmaker Tim Burton also returns as one of the directors and executive producers. "I've always been very protective of the character. I just want to make sure that we're always doing her justice," said Ortega. "It's the most we've ever seen her on screen so there's a lot of room and opportunity to maybe go off track. "Fortunately we have a really great creative team. I'm doing my best to be on it, but you also have people like Tim, who are monitoring." The second season sees Wednesday returning to Nevermore Academy as a celebrated hero, much to her dismay. She investigates new supernatural mysteries, while dealing with glitches in her psychic powers. Wednesday also faces another nuisance - family. Her little brother Pugsley starts his studies at Nevermore and their parents are a frequent presence on campus. 'PLAY OF EMOTIONS' Bringing the Addams Family to the academy allowed co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to expand the storylines of the characters introduced in the first season and explore mother-daughter dynamics. "We thought, wouldn't that be, for Wednesday, the ultimate thorn in her side if Morticia (her mother) came to school," said Millar. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia, promised fast-paced scenes between the two. "It's a dance and a play of emotions," Zeta-Jones said. The season's focus on female relationships stood out as one of its stronger points for Ortega. "We're so oftentimes taught to compete against one another and there's always some sort of comparing game that people are going to enforce on you," Ortega said. "What I love about the women I am working with and the characters, every woman in this show wants to see the other succeed. I think that's really important for young people to see today," she added. The sophomore season also introduces new characters, including Steve Buscemi's Nevermore principal Barry Dort and the Addams family matriarch Grandmama Hester Frump, played by Joanna Lumley. Pop star Lady Gaga makes a guest star appearance as a teacher in Part 2. Wednesday has already been renewed for a third season, with Gough and Millar in the writers' room "cooking that up" and ready to go beyond. "We have goalposts for other things. There could be spinoffs, there could be other iterations of the show," Millar said. "It's such a big world. We are excited to explore it as much as we can."
