Andhra govt told to take up repairs to Srisailam reservoir immediately

made a field visit to the Srisailam project on Tuesday and took a first-hand account of the damage. A team of experts from NDSA accompanied Jain during his visit to the project.

After going through the field level situation, the NDSA chairman asked the state govt to start the repair works immediately. He said that any delay in taking up the work will result in serious damage to the project.
The state water resources department special chief secretary G Sai Prasad explained that they have submitted a proposal to the Centre for grant of Rs 284 crore under the '
Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project
' (Drip) scheme for taking up repairs at the Srisailam project.
He said that the proposal was cleared by the Jal Shakti ministry and pending for final clearance from the Union finance ministry. However, NDSA chief Jain asked the state govt to start the work without waiting for the fund release from the Drip scheme. He said that there should be certain improvements in the condition before the monsoon. He said that it would not be possible to take up the work once the flow in Krishna river commenced.
He added that it was not wise to wait for the fund release from the Centre even as time is running out. He wanted that the repairs to the damaged plunge pool and apron should be taken up on a priority basis. He directed the state govt to complete the approach road to the apron of the project in the first phase. He had also directed the state govt to initiate work to prevent the landslide from the hillslopes abutting the Srisailam reservoir.

"You should commence the works with the state fund in case the releases from the Centre gets delayed. We can't put the dam safety at stake," said Anil Jain. He also reviewed the safety measures initiated by the state govt at the other major projects in the state. NDSA identified that immediate safety measures should be taken at six projects. Jain directed the officials to take up an assessment of the projects which were considered weak and submit a report to the Centre.
Taking the instructions of the NDSA chief with a serious note, the state govt directed the officials to ready the proposals to invite tenders to take up some works immediately.

HC orders restoration ofpower at SP MP's house
Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has directed to restore the electricity connection at the residence of Samajwadi Party MP of Sambhal Zia Ur Rehman Barq which was disconnected in Dec 2024. Passing above directions to Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, the court also stayed the final assessment order imposing on him electricity charges of Rs. 1.91 crores for a period of 4,138 days upon the allegation of unauthorised use of electricity. Barq had moved the HC against the assessment order on the ground that the same was passed entirely without jurisdiction as it imposed an assessment for over 12 years, when Section 126(5) of the Electricity Act only allowed imposition of charges for a maximum of 12 months in cases where the period of unauthorized usage was non-determinable. It was also contended that the final assessment order also demanded payment of electricity duty and compounding charges, which the authority had no jurisdiction to impose. Apart from above, it was also argued that by breaching the statutory period of assessment, an arbitrary demand of Rs 1.91 crore had been raised and that the petitioner cannot be made to deposit 50% of such illegal demand to maintain an appeal. Fixing July, 2, 2025, for next hearing, the court in its order dated June 4 stayed the final assessment subject to the petitioner depositing Rs 6 lakh within two weeks. It also directed the restoration of the electricity connection of the petitioner, subject to the timely payment of future bills. As per the statement of executive engineer, UPPCL in Sambhal, two meters at Barq's residence were found showing zero readings for the last six months and the units consumed did not exceed 100 in any of the remaining months last year. However, during the inspection, it was allegedly found that electricity consumption in his house exceeded 16 kilowatts daily, despite the sanctioned connection being only 4 kilowatts.

Govt plans to develop birthplaces of eminent personalities
1 2 Bhubaneswar: State govt is planning to launch a new initiative, 'Mahapurush Adarsh Gram Yojana', focusing on developing villages that are birthplaces of eminent personalities. The govt has instructed district collectors to identify and create a list of eligible villages. According to the panchayati raj and drinking water department, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi has conceptualised the scheme that seeks to combine rural development with preservation of historical legacy. Sources said the proposed programme will coordinate various existing govt schemes and departments to achieve complete saturation of development parameters in the villages. Key focus areas will include infrastructure development, education, healthcare, sanitation and digital connectivity. "This will be a new convergence-based scheme focusing on complete development of selected gram panchayats where eminent personalities were born. We are currently finalising the guidelines as per the CM's vision," Girish S N, secretary of the department, told TOI.
