Wolfsburg hires surprise Dutch Cup winner Paul Simonis as new coach
WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — Wolfsburg hired Paul Simonis as its new coach on Thursday after he won the Netherlands' top cup competition with his previous club Go Ahead Eagles.
The 40-year-old Simonis joins on a two-year contract with a task to 'realign VfL Wolfsburg with fresh impetus,' managing director for sport Peter Christiansen said.
Simonis' Dutch Cup win with Go Ahead Eagles in April was a surprise for a club which hadn't won a major trophy in 92 years, and came in his first career head coach role. The team's league finish of seventh was also its best in decades.
He replaced Ralph Hasenhüttl after the former Southampton and Leipzig coach was fired with two games remaining of the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg finished 11th under stand-in Daniel Bauer.
Simonis will be Wolfsburg's sixth permanent coach since 2021, the last year when it qualified for the men's Champions League.

Zverev to face nemesis Fritz in Stuttgart final

Top seed Zverev saved a set point in the first set of his semi-final on Saturday against another American, third seed Ben Shelton, to win 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-1). Fritz has won the last four matches against Zverev to lead their series 7-5, including at last year's Wimbledon, US Open and ATP Finals. Neither Zverev nor Fritz faced a break point on Saturday while Zverev wasted six break points against the big serving Shelton. "I am happy to be in the final. I will do everything to win tomorrow," Zverev told broadcasters DF1 as he bids for a first title on grass and 25th of his career. Fritz missed his second break point in the fourth game of the second set but prevailed in the tie-break on second match point when Auger-Alliasime hit a backhand wide. "I am so happy. It seemed it came down to a few points. I felt very lucky to get break in first set. I had more chances in the second. The tiebreak was close but it is great to be in the final," Fritz said. Last year's US Open and ATP Finals runner-up Fritz bounced back well from a disappointing first-round exit at the recent French Open in his start into the grass court season, where he was won three of his eight career titles - all of them in Eastbourne. Tottenham set to sign Mathys Tel permanently from Bayern Munich
Mathys Tel is set to join Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich. The France Under-21 international spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Spurs. The temporary move included a purchase option of €55million, but this has been renegotiated and Spurs are set to make the move permanent in an initial €35m deal, plus a €10m loan fee. Advertisement Tel has made 19 appearances for Tottenham, scoring three goals. He was part of the side that won the Europa League to secure a first trophy for the club in 17 years and Champions League football for next season. Former head coach Ange Postecoglou had been adamant ever since Tel arrived in February that he would become a Spurs player on a permanent basis. 'He'll be a Tottenham player,' Postecoglou said after he signed. 'I think he'll show everyone he's going to be a Tottenham player in the next six months. I didn't bring him here for six months.' Postecoglou was dismissed in June and Thomas Frank has been appointed his replacement. Tel joined Bayern from French side Rennes in 2022 and went on to play 83 times for the Bundesliga club, scoring 16 times and providing seven assists. He became Bayern's youngest ever goalscorer in August of that year, netting in a 5-0 win over Viktoria Cologne to beat the previous record held by Jamal Musiala. Manchester United also expressed an interest in Tel during the January window if he was available to move on loan. Chelsea, who had a long-standing interest in Tel that pre-dated the winter window, also made an enquiry.
