Kane Kepley gets drafted in the second round
Kane Kepley only spent one season with the North Carolina Tar Heels but his performance in the leadoff spot helped him get drafted early during the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday night.
Kepley was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the draft at No. 56 overall, being the second Tar Heel to be drafted on Sunday night. He joins catcher Luke Stevenson who was taken by the Seattle Mariners.
The 21-year-old Kepley is a North Carolina native who spent the first two years of his college career with the Liberty Flames before transferring to UNC. In his lone year with the Tar Heels, Kepley served as the team's leadoff man hitting .291/.451/.444 with 45 stolen bases over 61 games. With a smaller frame, he fit the leadoff role for UNC and hit just three home runs.
With Kepley's selection, the slot value is at $1,680,000 for the pick. But it's expected the Cubs will go a little lower than that to help with the rest of their picks.
Kepley is also the second ACC outfielder the Cubs have selected in this draft, taking Wake Forest's Ethan Conrad at No. 17 overall.

Texas A&M Baseball achieves dual draft Milestones after 2025 MLB picks

If there's one thing Texas A&M is committed to, it's developing players for Major League Baseball, and they've become one of the top programs in the country for doing so. While the ultimate goal of college sports is to win championships, another priority is preparing athletes for professional leagues. Although the Aggie baseball team has yet to stand atop the mountain, they boasts impressive stats when it comes to sending talent to the next level. Following the 2025 MLB Draft, A&M reached two major milestones. First is what has become commonplace in Aggieland: a streak of having at least two players drafted in every MLB draft since 1984. That's the longest active streak in the nation, now at an astonishing 40 years. Second, they stand alone as the only program in the country to have three or more players selected in every MLB draft since 2001. With players like Caden Sorrell, Gavin Grahovac, and Shane Sdao eligible next season, it's safe to expect both streaks will continue, regardless of the outcome for the 2026 Aggie baseball team. Former Spartan Jaden Akins impresses during NBA Summer League game on Wednesday

Former Michigan State Spartans guard Jaden Akins had his best performance of the NBA Summer League on Wednesday. Akins appeared in his third NBA Summer League game on Wednesday, dropping his best performance with Spartans head coach Tom Izzo in the house. Akins scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out one assist in the Orlando Magic's loss against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. Akins was signed by the Magic to their NBA Summer League team, giving him an opportunity to earn a spot in the organization (most likely on their G League team). He went unselected in last month's NBA Draft after a successful four year career at Michigan State. Akins will have one more opportunity to impress the Magic in a consolation game against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. That game is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised on NBA TV.
