
Married couple found burnt in bathroom after house fire
The victims, Mamat @ Jamrin Sinti and his wife, Noorijah Rashid, both aged 47, were discovered in the bathroom of the property.
District Fire and Rescue station chief Elge Bakuk said an emergency call was received at 2.52am.
A team of 10 personnel, along with a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, was dispatched to the scene to carry out firefighting operations.
"Upon arrival, the fire had fully engulfed a single-storey permanent structure. A Proton Saga parked nearby was also destroyed in the blaze.
"After the fire was brought under control at 3.22am, two victims were found burnt in the bathroom," he said when contacted today.
He added that the operation used one hose line and two jets, with water sourced from the fire engine.
"The victims' remains were handed over to the police for further action. Once it was confirmed that there were no other hazards at the site, the operation concluded at 4.55am," he said.
Meanwhile, district police chief Superintendent Shahrudin Mat Husain said the couple's remains were taken to the Forensic Unit of Kota Belud Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
"The man worked as a rubber tapper. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire and Rescue Department," he said.

Lorry driver seriously hurt after express bus crashes into two vehicles on NSE
MELAKA, Aug 4 — A lorry driver sustained serious leg injuries after an express bus carrying nine passengers collided with the lorry and a trailer at Kilometre 220.5 on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) northbound early this morning. Melaka Zone 2 Fire and Rescue Department chief, Fire Superintendent Zulkhairani Ramli, said the 23-year-old driver of the seven-tonne lorry sustained injuries to his right leg after being pinned to his seat in the incident, which occurred at around 1am. 'The fire department received a distress call at 1.02 am, after which one fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, involving 10 personnel from the Alor Gajah Fire and Rescue Station, were dispatched to the scene. 'The rescue team arrived at the scene at 1.22 am and found that the accident had involved an express bus, a lorry, and a trailer. The lorry driver was trapped inside his vehicle,' he said in a statement today. He said the 64-year-old express bus driver, his passengers, and the 56-year-old 14-tonne trailer driver escaped unhurt. According to him, 15 minutes after being extricated by the rescue team, the lorry driver was transported by the EMRS unit to Rembau Hospital in Negeri Sembilan. Zulkhairani said, based on information, all three vehicles were travelling in the left lane of the highway. The express bus is believed to have crashed into the lorry and the trailer. — Bernama

Man disappears after foraging trip near Miri — search enters second day
MIRI, Aug 3 — A search-and-rescue (SAR) operation resumed today for a 44-year-old man reported missing while foraging for jungle vegetables along the bypass road near the Miri Bus Terminal Station last Friday. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the family of the victim, Udil Lutan, filed a missing person report on Saturday after he failed to return home. 'According to the report, Udil had contacted a family member at around 8.30pm on Friday asking to be picked up at a location. 'However, when the family member arrived at the said location, the victim was nowhere to be found despite a search of the area,' he said. Mohd Farhan said a search on Saturday failed to locate Udil and was postponed in the evening before being resumed at 8am today. Apart from the police, personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Force, as well as Udil's family are also involved in the SAR, he added. Five injured after van crash in Keningau

The Toyota Hiace van was reported to have crashed at 11.38pm, with members of the public managing to rescue all five victims before firefighters arrived. Firefighters from the Keningau station provided initial treatment to three injured women at the scene. Two injured men were taken to the hospital by the public, while the three women were transported by the Fire and Rescue Department's EMRS unit.
