Galatasaray accuse Jose Mourinho of ‘racist statements', intend to initiate criminal proceedings

New York Times25-02-2025

Galatasaray have accused Jose Mourinho of making 'racist statements' and intend to initiate criminal proceedings against the Fenerbahce head coach.
The two Istanbul rival clubs, who occupy the top two places in the Turkish Super Lig table, played out a 0-0 draw in the league on Monday.
However after the game, in praising Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic who was drafted in by the Turkish Football Federation after a request from both clubs, Mourinho criticised the Galatasaray bench for their reaction to what he perceived as a dive in the early stages of the game.

The 62-year-old said: 'I have to thank the referee. After the big dive in the first minute and their (Galatasaray's) bench jumping like monkeys on top of each other.
'If it was a Turkish referee, you would have a yellow card after one minute, and after five minutes, I would have to change him. Thankfully, it was a perfect experience for him.'
Hours after the game at RAMS Park concluded, Galatasaray released a statement that read: 'Since the commencement of his managerial duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people.
'Today, his discourse has escalated beyond merely immoral comments into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric.

'We hereby formally declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings concerning the racist statements made by Mourinho, and shall accordingly submit official complaints to (governing bodies) UEFA and FIFA.
'Furthermore, we shall diligently observe the stance adopted by Fenerbahce — an institution professing to uphold 'exemplary moral values' — in response to the reprehensible conduct exhibited by their manager.'
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, who is on loan from Napoli, reposted Galatasaray's statement on social media, adding the 'Say No To Racism' logo on his Instagram story.
Fenerbahce say Mourinho's comments have been taken 'completely out of context and deliberately distorted' and they are weighing up legal action of their own.

'As any rational person can see and understand these expressions used by Jose Mourinho during the match to describe the overreaction of the opposing team's technical committee to the referee's decisions cannot be associated with racism in any way,' a statement released on Tuesday read.
'Trying to portray this discourse as a racist discourse is a completely malicious approach. We inform the public that we will use our legal rights regarding this incapable slander, that aims to take the competition off the field, change and manipulate the agenda.'
The game between the fierce rivals was halted after 52 minutes due to fans throwing flares onto the pitch. There was also a heavy police presence at the stadium in Istanbul, with an estimated 30,000 officers deployed to deter crowd trouble.
Galatasaray are top of the Super Lig, six points clear of second-placed Fenerbahce.

Lewis Hamilton's Father Shares Emotional Life-Changing Story

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Lewis Hamilton's father, Anthony Hamilton, opened up on his life struggles and shared the inspiring story of how his son first met the former CEO of McLaren, Ron Dennis at age ten, an encounter that aligned him with his F1 journey to become a seven-time world champion. Anthony's message in the short video holds the power to uplift anyone going through a tough chapter in life. Appearing on Instagram, Anthony also addressed all fathers and revealed that the proudest thing for him was that both his sons had become great human beings, a point all fathers should aspire to achieve. Lewis began his storied F1 career in 2007 with McLaren. Despite the financial difficulties, Anthony ensured his son received the necessary training from the karting level at a very young age, helping him build a solid foundation that has made him what he is today, not only as a driver but also as a grounded individual who drives several initiatives to help the underprivileged. More GREG BAKER / AFP/Getty Images Appearing on 'Dose of Society' on Instagram (below), Anthony was asked to reveal one experience that changed his life. He said: "One of the biggest experiences was meeting Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards when Lewis was just about ten years of age. Lewis went up to Ron and said, 'One day I want to race for McLaren.' Ron said, 'Here's my number. Come back in nine years' time.' "I just had an ordinary job, we had no idea where the karting would lead us. It was an opportunity. I believe God puts you in the right place at the right time. And when someone like Mr Dennis says call me in nine years' time, you work hard to make sure you achieve those opportunities and maximise your dream." Anthony then pointed out that positive change often follows hardships, but one must tap into the opportunities coming their way to reap the rewards. He added: "You know when I was younger, nothing positive ever happened for me. My mum died when I was 16. I left home, I'm struggling to find a job, find somewhere to live. And then, positive things start to happen. And then your life starts to change positively. Every time there's a positive change, you just maximise on it and believe on it." When Anthony was asked what advice he would give to fathers, he said: "Nobody ever says, when you have a kid, here's a manual. So, you have to make it up as you go. We all make mistakes, nobody ever is perfect. But the one thing that you always want, I think, as a parent, is you want your kid to be better than you. "I remember when Lewis was 6 years of age, messing about with remote-controlled cars around the back of our house. You always just hope that they're going to grow up decent human beings, become decent individuals. "And that, for me, is the proudest thing. He's a phenomenal, phenomenal individual. Both him and my other son Nicholas, probably two of the most amazing people I know. And hopefully they're inspirational for others." U.S. volleyball star Erik Shoji comes out as queer

Erik Shoji has spent a decade spiking balls on the world's biggest stages for the US men's volleyball team, and now he's sharing something even more personal. In a video posted to both his Instagram and TikTok pages, the 35-year-old libero sat beside his snoozing labradoodle and said plainly, 'I'm here to tell the world today that I am queer.' Advertisement Shoji admitted the moment felt 'scary, but freeing at the same time,' noting that self-acceptance took longer than he expected. 'I'm stronger, more confident, and more sure of myself than I've ever been,' he added, eyes shining. 'Given who I am and the platform that I have, this is my moment, and I'm so excited to move forward after this.' The Hawai'i native has captained the U.S. men's national team since 2025, but has racked up Olympic bronze medals in Rio 2016 and Paris 2024, plus two FIVB World Cup golds. Off-court, he's a TikTok influencer known for wholesome roommate bits and behind-the-scenes vlogs from pro stints in Germany, Russia, Italy, and, most recently, Poland's powerhouse ZAKSA. Support for his announcement poured in within minutes. USA Volleyball commented, 'Proud of you, Erik… we're honored to stand with you, always.' Fellow Olympian Merrick McHenry, himself an out gay athlete, wrote, 'Thank you for being you!' Volleyball Nations League, Mizuno, and a roster of international stars echoed the love. Outside of McHenry, Shoji also joins the ranks of Kyle Friend, Tim Brewster, and Justin Lui as one of the out professional gay volleyball players. Advertisement Shoji hopes the news shows younger players they can thrive without hiding. 'Moving forward means feeling completely free and myself,' he said. 'I want my life to feel like I have one life, and saying this brings it all together.' That next chapter starts on June 25, when the U.S. hosts China in Chicago's VNL leg, Shoji's first match since coming out. Expect the crowd to roar a little louder when No. 22 jogs onto the court as a world-class defender, now playing wide open.

Man United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir rejected by Turkey's big four clubs after agent offered him around

Man United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir rejected by Turkey's big four clubs after agent offered him around Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was reportedly offered to Turkey's big four clubs – Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Trabzonspor – but they all turned down the chance to sign him. Bayindir joined United in the summer of 2023 from Fenerbahce in a deal worth around £4.3m. Advertisement He arrived at the club at the same time as Andre Onana, but neither goalkeeper has managed to impress. Despite Onana's error-prone performances, Bayindir has failed to dislodge him as United's number one. Bayindir made his Premier League debut this season after stepping in for Onana, who was dropped following two costly errors in the first leg of United's Europa League quarter-final clash against Olympique Lyonnais. However, Bayindir was unable to make the most of his opportunity, conceding four goals in a heavy defeat to Newcastle at St James' Park. The Turkey international finished the 2024/25 campaign with 10 appearances to his name across all competitions. He conceded 18 goals in that period. Much like Onana, Bayindir's performances were marred by costly mistakes, and there's a growing consensus that he isn't the long-term solution to United's goalkeeping problems. Advertisement There have been suggestions that Bayindir could leave Old Trafford this summer in search of regular first-team minutes elsewhere. A report covered by The Peoples Person claimed that United are open to listening to offers for him. Now, there's been an update on Bayindir's situation, nd it doesn't bode well for the goalkeeper as he looks to secure a move away and continue his career elsewhere. According to Turkish news outlet A Sport [via Fotomac], Bayindir's agent approached the four biggest club in Turkey to offer his client, but none showed any interest in adding him to their ranks. However, while one club has shown a willingness to sign the 27-year-old, he himself isn't particularly enthusiastic about the move. Advertisement 'Manchester United have put Altay Bayındır on their sale list.' 'Altay Bayındır's manager contacted representatives of the big four teams but received negative feedback.' 'Çaykur Rizespor has shown interest in the player, but the national goalkeeper wants to continue in Europe if the big four teams do not sign him.' Bayindir has two years left on his United contract.
