Maserati MC20 Folgore Is Canceled After Five Years of Gestation
Maserati has officially canceled plans for an electric supercar, according to a report from .
The MC20 Folgore was originally announced in 2020 and was supposed to finally be launched in 2025.
A tri-motor powertrain would have churned out at least 700 horsepower, but now the will continue exclusively with its twin-turbocharged V-6 powertrain.
Once known for the roar of V-8 engines, Maserati has spent the past couple of years transitioning away from internal combustion and toward an all-electric future. But one element of those plans has now been scrapped after Stellantis recently canceled a roughly $1.5 billion investment in the brand. Maserati had aimed to introduce the MC20 Folgore, an electric version of its slinky supercar, this year. Instead, according to Autocar, the MC20 Folgore has been officially canceled.
Maserati first announced its intention to create an electric supercar way back in 2020 when it first revealed the gas-powered MC20. At the time, the Italian automaker said an electric version would arrive shortly after the V-6-engined car went on sale and would pack a 700-hp tri-motor powertrain. But when the MC20 finally hit the streets for the 2022 model year, there was no news about the Folgore version.
Last year, Maserati gave us an update on the MC20 Folgore, revealing that it would be launched in 2025. But that plan has been thrown in the scrap heap, with the company reportedly saying that the decision to cancel the MC20 Folgore was caused by a lack of demand. We have reached out the Maserati to confirm the news of the MC20 Folgore's demise and will update this story when we've heard more.
Autocar also reported that, instead of the Folgore, Maserati will give the gas-powered MC20 a thorough update that could include some of the upgrades found on the MC20 GT2 Stradale.
The cancellation of the MC20 Folgore as well as the retraction of funding by parent company Stellantis calls into question Maserati's greater transition toward electrification, as well as the health of the brand as a whole. Last year, Maserati confirmed that the MC20 Folgore would be followed by a large electric SUV in 2027 and an electric successor to the long-running Quattroporte sedan, which had been delayed to 2028 from its originally scheduled 2024 launch. Given the setbacks Maserati's EVs have already experienced, however, it wouldn't be terribly surprising for the plans that Maserati announced last year to have already shifted.
Another interesting factor in the news of the MC20 Folgore's death is the status of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, which shares its bones with the MC20. While the first gas-powered 33 Stradale was delivered last fall, the Alfa Romeo was also supposed to come with an electric version with 750 hp and a 240-mile range. However, with only 33 units of the supercar being built worldwide, it's unclear if Alfa Romeo will follow through on the investment needed for only a handful of electric 33 Stradales.

San Francisco Says Goodbye to 99-Year-Old Fisherman's Wharf Institution
A cornerstone of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf is coming down. Alioto's, a 99-year-old Sicilian seafood restaurant that survived fires, earthquakes, and generations of diners, will be demolished as part of a sweeping $10 million renovation of the iconic waterfront. Once the wharf's first permanent building, Alioto's began as a modest fish stand in 1925 before evolving into an 11,000-square-foot institution known for Dungeness crab and shrimp cocktails. Its founder, Italian immigrant Nunzio Alioto, carved out a legacy that weathered decades of change until the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered the family-run restaurant for good in 2020. SFGate reported that efforts to revive Alioto's failed, according to Port Director Elaine Forbes, who said the structure's age, deterioration, and costly repair needs scared off potential operators. So instead of another tenant, the site will become part of a new public plaza, complete with lighting installations and scenic overlooks. The first phase of the project is scheduled to wrap by summer 2026. Plans include direct access to docked fishing boats, where visitors will once again be able to buy fresh fish and crab straight from the source. Alioto's isn't the only lost legend. Longtime fixtures like Fishermen's Grotto and Tarantino's are also gone. But fresh names are moving in. Salvadoran spot Chasca Rio will open in the former Pompei's Grotto by year's end, and Everett & Jones barbecue will take over Lou's Fish Shack's old space on Jefferson Street. The port's long-term plans stretch through the next 75 years, with a focus on climate resilience. Projects will strengthen seawalls, flood-proof buildings, modernize retail and public spaces, and support the fishing fleet that gives the wharf its name. Ram to enter trucks in 2026 with possible future move to Cup for Dodge
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Dodge parent company Stellantis will enter NASCAR racing in 2026 with its Ram brand competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with an eye toward going Cup racing in the years beyond. Whether that's 2027 or later — 2027 is possible but would be an aggressive timeline — remains to be seen as the announcement Sunday focused primarily on the truck, a much easier lift than going Cup racing. With all trucks in the series using an Ilmor engine and several common body elements, Ram just needed to design a nose, a hood, front fenders and a tail for its racing vehicle. Ram did not announce who will drive its trucks nor the teams that will field its trucks. Ram CEO Tim Kinuskis said he hopes to have somewhere between four and six trucks for the 2026 season opener at Daytona. "We're looking for a date to the prom right now [for trucks]," Kinuskis said. "So how am I going to get the Cup? That's going to depend on how I get to truck. So however we get to truck is going will obviously weigh heavily on do I have a path to Cup? "Our intention is not to do a one-hit wonder and go to truck and not to Cup. That's not our plan." Ram does not have cars so what brand of car — Dodge? Plymouth's possible rebirth? — is still to be determined although Dodge has a lengthy history in the sport and motorsports as a whole. "Ram is coming back to the truck series," Kinuskis said. "It has nothing to do with Dodge, despite the fact that everyone in the world calls it Dodge Ram. ... If we go back to Cup, which is our intention, Ram doesn't have a car, so obviously that would have to be Dodge coming back. "But I'm not making that announcement. I'm not saying Dodge is back. Don't put that headline. But when we get to that point, it wouldn't be Ram, obviously." There is speculation in the industry that GMS, which has competed in all three national series over the last decade and was eventually bought out by Jimmie Johnson in the rebranding to Legacy Motor Club, will be involved in building chassis and/or fielding trucks for Ram. Kinuskis promised a program that will elevate fan engagement, and YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, who has competed in some ARCA races, has been linked to the Ram program. Dodge had Cup teams from 2001-12 before exiting the sport on a high note with Brad Keselowski winning a Cup title at Team Penske. When Penske left for Ford, Dodge had trouble landing a premier team and opted to leave the sport. No new manufacturer has entered the sport since Toyota did so in 2004 in trucks and 2007 in Cup. Kinuskis also said when he returned to Ram earlier this year, his two goals were to reintroduce the Hemi engine and get into NASCAR, where 50 percent of its fan base own trucks. "It's always bothered me," Kinuskis said. "We've always been looking for a way to get back. It took us a long time to find the absolute right time." To re-enter Cup would take some engine development and significant body design, a process that would take at least 18 months, NASCAR Chief Racing Development Officer John Probst said. "The last time that engine ran was 2012 — the core components of the block, the head, the manifold, are all still relevant," Probst said. "Our existing engine builders develop their engines every year. There's been a gap there, so there'd be some development of that engine needed. "But from the basic building blocks they could start from that and do some catch-up development." Kinuskis wouldn't talk about a timeline Sunday for going to Cup racing. "Our full intention is to be back in Cup," Kinuskis said. "But right now we're on a path for Daytona next year with truck, with our eye on when we can be in Cup after that. TBD. "We're a fly with no net right now trying to get to Daytona. That's our focus right now." Keselowski, currently a driver and co-owner at RFK Racing, said the trucks are the right entry point for a manufacturer as it doesn't have to immediately get an engine available and because of the parity in the series. "[The truck series] is a great place for an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] to enter NASCAR and really kind of get that appetite going for the Cup Series," Keselowski said. "It's a big jump from the truck series to the Cup Series, but nonetheless it's a great entry point for OEMs, and hopefully they aren't the only one that will enter the truck series."
