Mel Owens has officially been named the next Golden Bachelor ahead of the second season of the hit ABC reality series.
Disney made the big announcement during Hulu's inaugural Get Real House event on Tuesday.
The 66-year-old previously played for the NFL as a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams from 1981 through 1989.
Beforehand, the former sports star attended the University of Michigan where he played college football - and then was drafted into the NFL as the ninth pick for the Rams.
Owens was previously married and shares two sons with his ex-wife, but is now on the search for love once again, per an official press release shared by ABC.
Gerry Turner appeared in the first season of The Golden Bachelor which aired back in 2023 where he married winning contestant Theresa Nist. However, the pair finalized their divorce last year in June.
After his time playing for the NFL, Mel went on to fulfill a career in law while residing in Orange County - with a specific interest in sports-related injuries.
He also took time to raise his two children after his marriage to came to end. Around that time, Owens also lost his father.
'While life took an unexpected turn with the passing of his father and the end of his marriage, Owens channeled his energy into being the best father he could be, focusing on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams,' the release read.
Mel is now looking for the 'simple joys of companionship - sharing life's everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple.'
The unscripted reality dating show - which is a spin-off of The Bachelor - first began airing in September 2023 with Gerry Turner named the as the Golden Bachelor.
He ended up choosing Theresa Nist and their nuptials was aired live on ABC during a special broadcast in January 2024.
However, it was announced that the pair were headed for divorce just three months later.
During an appearance on Good Morning America at the time, Gerry stated: 'Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we've looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth.
Mel is now looking for the 'simple joys of companionship - sharing life's everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple'
'And we've kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it's probably time for us to - dissolve our marriage.'
Turner later added, 'The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations, it's been how dedicated both of us are to our families.
'So we look at these situations and I think we just feel like it's best for the happiness of each of us to live apart.'
Theresa also said while joining the GMA interview, 'We looked at homes in South Carolina, we considered New Jersey, and we just looked at home after home, but we never got to the point where we made that decision.
'We have received so much love and support from so many people who watched The Golden Bachelor, and I don't think we can tell you how many people told us that it gave them so much hope. We want none of that to change for anybody...'
Late last year in December, it was revealed that Gerry had been diagnosed with an incurable and slow-growing bone marrow cancer before his split from Nist.
He explained to People, 'I think it's time, also because it probably will clear up a lot of mystery around what happened back in February, March and April.
'As Theresa and I were trying very hard to find our lifestyle and where we were going to live and how we were going to make our life work, I was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer.'
He added, 'Unfortunately, there's no cure for it. So that weighs heavily in every decision I make. It was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me. And I was a bit in denial for a while, I didn't want to admit to it.'
Turner recalled that Theresa had been 'understandably awestruck' when he told her the devastating news.
The Golden Bachelor broke records after it began airing on ABC as well as the streaming site Hulu, per Deadline.
The show notably reached the strongest viewership average for an ABC unscripted series in five years.
The premiere episode also broke the record on streaming as ABC's most-watched episode of an unscripted series ever on Hulu after 35 days of viewership.
The Golden Bachelorette aired its first season last year in September 2024 and starred Joan Vassos.
She had made an appearance on The Golden Bachelor but exited the series early due to a family emergency.
Vassos later chose contestant Charles 'Chock' Chapple and the pair became engaged in Bora Bora last year when he popped the big question with an $80k ring.
It was revealed a few months earlier in February that the two are still not living together, with Joan residing in the state of Maryland and Charles in Kansas.
Along with the casting of The Golden Bachelor being revealed on Tuesday, ABC also shared that Hannah Brown will join Jesse Palmer and Wells Adam in the new season of Bachelor In Paradise - which will take place in Costa Rica.
It is still not known when The Golden Bachelor and Bachelor In Paradise will begin airing the upcoming seasons.

Scrubs-style medical comedy from top US writers airs on BBC1 tonight
If you're looking for your next laugh, BBC1 is showing St Denis Medical, a workplace comedy with a big heart From the Superstore team, St Denis Medical (on tonight, June 6, on BBC1 at 10.40pm) is a funny and charming workplace comedy that could easily run for many seasons. The mockumentary-style sitcom is created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin - Justin is a top showrunner, best known for his work on Superstore, with other credits including Scrubs and the American version of The Office. The US show introduces us to St. Denis Medical, a safety-net hospital in Oregon, although hospital boss Joyce (The Goldbergs' Wendi McLendon-Covey) is trying to promote it as 'an international medical destination'. It begins as supervising nurse Alex, played by the brilliant Allison Tolman (you'll recognise her from Fargo and Good Girls), helps a drug addict in the ER. Alex is a workaholic who thinks the emergency ward would collapse without her - although she's probably right. On reception, her overworked colleague Val (Kaliko Kauahi, you'll know her as Superstore's Sandra), tries to handle a restless queue of patients. New staff nurse Matt (Mekki Leeper) is late on his first day - coming from a remote community that doesn't believe in medicine, he'll be starting with the basics. He thinks he's one of the Avengers, but he's completely useless. Making up this eclectic team are jaded Dr Ron (David Alan Grier), nurse Serena (Kahyun Kim) and surgeon Bruce (Josh Lawson), who keeps a samurai sword and a guitar in his office next to all his certificates and thinks he's a detective doctor like 'House'. He's not. This is not a glossy, glamorous medical drama - it's more Scrubs than Grey's, as the under-funded but dedicated staff try not to lose their patience or their patients. Expect lots of laughs and slapstick humour, but also, just when you least expect it, a lot of heart. Starts with a double-bill. *St Denis Medical is airing on BBC1 tonight at 10.40pm There's plenty more on TV tonight - here's the best of the rest.. ALISON HAMMOND'S BIG WEEKEND, BBC1, 8.30pm A cackling, warm-hearted open book, it's no wonder celebrities will tell Alison anything. They begin in Mel's hometown of Leeds, where she has built a new life following her high-profile divorce from second husband, Stephen Belafonte. A far cry from her popstar days, Mel's daily routine now involves helping feed the chickens and goats on her working farm. Of course, Alison (a Spice Girls fan obviously) also finds out about life in the band and discovers that Mel and Geri still have a tumultuous relationship, speaking one day and not the next. The visit takes a heartfelt turn when Alison meets Mel's mother, Andrea. They reflect on the challenges of Mel's past, including her time in America and her troubled marriage, which strained their mother-daughter bond for years. THE SURVIVORS, NETFLIX Your latest binge watch is right here, a gripping murder mystery based on Jane Harper's novel of the same name. Fifteen years later, returning with partner Mia (Yerin Ha) and young child, the guilt that still haunts him resurfaces. When the body of a young woman is found on the beach, the town is once again rocked by tragedy and questions surface about the past. The investigation of her death threatens to reveal long-held secrets, the truth about the missing girl, and a killer among them. A drama about grief and loss and also a thrilling whodunit. EMMERDALE, ITV1, 7.30pm Cain is still reeling after Nate's body was identified and he was questioned by the police. He's been having flashbacks about the last time he saw his son. With Cain being strangely contrite, Tracy remains suspicious. There is further shock when DC Cole arrives. There has been a development in Nate's case, but will it plunge anyone else into the frame? It's Sarah's birthday, but with everything that's going on, it's not a happy day. A resolution is found for Pollard. CORONATION STREET, ITV1, 8pm Having allowed Millie to stay the night, Eileen warns Todd he may become responsible for her and must address the problem. Theo tells Millie her Mum wants her home, but Millie will only return if Theo moves back in. Dee-Dee assures Ed that she's put the past behind her and her focus is on ensuring better training for midwives. When Debbie and Carl call at No.13 with bacon sandwiches, Kevin clocks Abi's discomfort and leaves feeling suspicious.

Daddy duty! The Bachelor's Sam Wood is every inch the doting father as he juggles his three young daughters during an outing in Melbourne
Sam Wood effortlessly juggled daddy duties during an outing with his three daughters this week. The former Bachelor star was every inch the doting father as he guided the youngsters - Willow, seven, Charlie, five, and Harper, two - down a busy street in Richmond. The clan all held hands as they enjoyed a fun day out at the shops. The Bachelor star, 44, looked relaxed and stylish in an all-black ensemble, wearing a cosy jumper paired with matching tracksuit pants that perfectly complemented his salt-and-pepper hair. He completed his casual look with crisp white runners and sunglasses casually tucked into his jumper. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. His wife Snezana was not present during the outing. Sam recently returned from New York where he was visiting the couple's eldest daughter Evie, 19, who is living in the US. The loved-up pair, who are still going strong nine years after meeting and falling in love on The Bachelor, are reportedly eyeing off a glorious mansion in one of Melbourne's most sought after postcodes. Real estate insiders say the hunky reality star and his wife have already laid out an eye-watering $14million for the sprawling pad. Located in seaside Brighton, 14kms from the CBD, the beautiful vintage multi-level estate boasts six-bedrooms, a pool and expansive gardens. However, the Herald Sun reported that the genetically-blessed pair have yet to seal the deal on the trophy home. Now a business mogul, Sam has built an multimillion dollar empire. In 2022 he sold his fitness program - 28 by Sam Wood - to genetics group myDNA for $71million. The entrepreneur continues to invest in the company and holds a five per cent stake. He has also amassed a $10 million real estate portfolio, including a $4 million home in Elsternwick which he shares with his family. Sam made his entry into the property market back in 2014, when he purchased a two bedroom 1728 square metre unit in Carnegie's Koornang Road for $477,500. In April, Sam revealed intimate details about his marriage to Snezana He said that the couple turned to therapy to work on their communication skills. In a revealing confession, the fitness entrepreneur said the pair were prone to 'petty rows' that left them 'agitated'. 'People hear couples counselling, marriage counselling, and they think it's doom and gloom, but it's actually about learning communication techniques,' the father-of-four said on an episode of Mamamia's This Glorious Mess podcast.

Disney fans creeped out to learn where they've heard Lilo's voice before
A Lilo & Stitch voice star went on to appear in an iconic horror film, with the two films releasing in the same year and surprising fans of the much-loved family-friendly animated film Fans of the hit animated Disney film Lilo & Stitch are just realising one of its stars featured in a horror classic. The animated classic has just been remade by the studio into a live action feature film. Lilo & Stitch, first released in 2002, follows an alien called Stitch – who tries to impersonate a dog while in the care of Lilo. The voice of Lilo, Daveigh Chase, has stunned audiences though as they realise where they may have seen the star before. While neither Chase or Stitch voice actor Chris Sanders returned for the live action version of the film, some may recognise Lilo's voice star. Fans of the r/TodayILearned subreddit shared the roles Chase had also been cast in, including a horror classic and a film which catapulted actor Jake Gyllenhaal to fame. The user wrote: "Daveigh Chase, who was the voice of Lilo in Lilo & Stich, also played Samara, the creepy girl in The Ring." Fans were stunned to make the connection between the horror classic and the family-friendly animated film. One user joked: "One minute you're making friends with aliens, next minute you're crawling out of TVs. Iconic." Another user in a separate thread sharing the same information added: "The actress which interpreted the little sister of Donnie Darko (Daveigh Chase) was actually the same actress (grown-up) on the movie The Ring, a horror film where people who view a videotape are killed by a monster crawling out of their TV screens, received a sequel in 2017 which marks Chase's final on-screen appearance. Though her feature in the film is just archival footage, it marks her most recent role to date. She also starred in independent horror film Wild in Blue. Chase has not appeared in anything since, though also featured in the English dub of Studio Ghibli classic, Spirited Away, as well as deleted scenes of Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Lilo & Stitch and The Ring released in 2002, with the family-friendly comedy about a space monster pretending to be a dog quite the contrast to a film where Chase portrays a ghoul trapped inside a television. Fans of Lilo & Stitch have since found her work in The Ring to be quite chilling. One wrote: "I knew there was a reason Lilo creeped me out. The Ring was the only movie to EVER give me nightmares." Another added: "I have to thank her for giving me those sleepless nights when I was young." A third wrote: "Should have been titled: TIL Donnie Darko's kid sister was the voice of Lilo & Stitch!" Chase also featured in the Donnie Darko sequel, S. Darko, which viewers are keen to forget. One wrote: "Wait a second, Donnie Darko had a sequel?" Another replied: "A s***y sequel, yeah."
