Former SAD leader Harmeet Singh Sandhu to join AAP today ahead of Tarn Taran bypoll
His induction in the party is being linked to an upcoming Assembly byelection necessitated after the demise of sitting AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal on June 27. The constituency was subsequently declared vacant by Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Sandhwan. AAP may field him from Taran Tarn in the byelection.
The Assembly bypoll in Taran Tarn, which has to be conducted within six months after the announcement of the constituency falling vacant, has not been announced yet.
Sandhu was considered close to SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who is in Nabha jail currently after being arrested by the Vigilance Bureau in a disproportionate assets case. He had quit SAD in November last year, handing his resignation to then acting president Balwinder Singh Bhunder. He had cited personal reasons for the resignation. Ever since, conjectures were being made about his plans.
AAP has been looking for a befitting candidate from Tarn Taran, especially after all political parties have been keenly watching the support for radicals in the area. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh was elected from Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat while he was in the Dibrugarh jail in Assam after being named an accused under the National Security Act.
Sandhu was elected MLA from Tarn Taran thrice—in 2002, 2007 and then again in 2012—but he lost in 2017 and 2022. He joined AAP when Congress was ruling the state.
He became a part of active politics in Tarn Taran by joining the family of former MP Surinder Singh Kairon and contested the elections as an Independent candidate in 2002. At the time, the Shiromani Akali Dal had given a ticket to Alwinder Pal Singh Pakhoke from Tarn Taran, while Sandhu kept claiming the ticket. After not getting the ticket, Sandhu took political support from Kairon and contested the elections as an Independent candidate from Tarn Taran and won.

Working to improve public's experience of DTC buses: Delhi CM
Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced plans to upgrade the public bus services by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), wherein they will introduce smart travel cards, modernise interstate bus terminals (ISBTs), restructure the bus routes, and redesign bus queue shelters into more comfortable and high-tech setups. CM Rekha Gupta (Arvind Yadav/HT) Criticising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led previous Delhi government, Gupta said DTC is currently at a loss of ₹60,000 crore due to mismanagement by the AAP. 'Our government envisions DTC as a symbol of excellent transport service in Delhi. We are determined to give Delhi citizens a sustainable, green, and smart public transport experience' she said at a review meeting of the transport department on Tuesday. Noting that several electric buses currently operate on outdated routes, the CM said that the government has collaborated with IIT Delhi to design a new, comprehensive route plan, which will cover small areas of Delhi, and connect commuters to the Delhi Metro services. The trial will first be implemented in Yamunapur, and later expanded in other parts of the city. As per plans by the government, a unified smart card system will be introduced across all modes of public transport in Delhi, such as DTC buses, the Delhi Metro, and on the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). A special pink card for women and transgender residents was also announced for free of cost travel in DTC buses. Further, the government aims to equip all bus queue shelters with digital boards for displays, LED lighting, weather-resistant designs, and solar power panels. These upgrades will be done following the Public-Private Partnership model (PPP), officials said. Other key revamps include upgrading the ISBTs to ensure comfort, safety, and accessibility to passengers, providing them with 'airport-like amenities,' said a government official, adding that the government will begin this work soon. Number of Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVI) buses larger buses will also be increased. Delhi's transport minister Pankaj Singh, chief secretary Dharmendra, and transport commissioner Niharik Rai were also present in the meeting. Same Story, New Cast
Gen Next netas are leading Bihar assembly contests, but it's still all caste and faith Nitish Kumar rarely looks wobbly. Even when his govt shifts from one alliance to the other. He is rarely a failed engine in image or perception. But ahead of 2025 assembly election, Bihar's CM may find himself as shaky as some of his state's bridges turn out to be. For all the supposed faith in 'sushasan babu', fact is his biggest competition is emerging within his own alliance. NDA ally, who calls himself Modi's 'hanuman', the man who played spoiler for JDU in 2020 state polls, Dalit Union minister Chirag Paswan wants to be NDA's CM-face. And he's making no bones about it. Chirag's confidence in moving from Parliament to Patna, with plans to contest on all 243 assembly seats, is driven by the fact that LJP in 2020 likely hurt NDA in 59 seats, where it relegated JDU and allies to third slot. Chirag's rise from the dust of factionalism after his father Ram Vilas Paswan's death in 2021 is in no small measure due to Modi keeping an eye out for him. It may be very early days yet. But Bihar lives election to election, with intervening five years committed to a cycle of falling bridges, poverty chatter, migration, and MosPI surveys. When it's poll-time, it's back to stirring the caste cauldron. It's the first election after the deaths of BJP face Sushil Modi and LJP's Ram Vilas Paswan. Nitish's health is not what it used to be, and Lalu has handed over the reins to his son – Tejashwi, who leads opposition INDIA camp. Count in also Jitan Ram Manjhi's son. Short shrift was made of Nitish's attempts to induct his son into politics – JDU's future would seem uncertain. NDA made Nitish CM in 2020, but by far BJP is the bigger partner. In 2020 state polls, NDA won 125 seats (BJP 74, JDU 43), then UPA 110 (RJD 75, Cong 19). In Lok Sabha 2024, BJP won 12 of Bihar's 40 seats with vote share 21%, JDU 12 seats with 19%, and Chirag's LJP(RV) all 5 seats it contested with a 7% vote share. Opposition RJD won 4 seats with 22%. The assembly election in a way is a handover to Gen Next who'll be contesting against the backdrop of the 2022 caste survey, an upcoming caste census, and 'illegal immigrants' which is a poll issue for the first time in Bihar. Collapsing bridges, crippled health infra, migration and poverty – all that's for the surveyors, not elections.
