The 36-year-old later competed on Strictly Come Dancing, finishing as runner-up behind Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Speaking to Gay Times Magazine, John opened up about his experiences in the TV industry.
The baker and presenter said: "I think the deeper conversation here is about welfare generally within the TV industry. I think that is still very much an elusive beast.
"As soon as Strictly finishes, it's like, get out the hotel, get out the flat, go home, but that is a life- altering event for the individual who's been subject to the headlines, often at the hand of these shows, because these shows sometimes feed stories to the media.
"TV is manipulative and it's a distortion of truth, there's always an ulterior motive.
"People aren't being fed the unadulterated, objective truth. And I certainly don't subscribe to that."
Continuing, John recounted how he was "around 23" during his time on Bake Off.
He recalled thinking his "existence hinged on being successful in television."
John added: "But I think when you go through all these different permutations of your life, you start to realise that the b******t just does not matter.
"What actually matters is your health, your sanity, your loved ones, your family, be it biological or chosen."

Elsewhere in the interview, John revealed a family member had called him "disgusting" due to his OnlyFans content.
The Sun previously revealed how he made a return to the platform earlier this year.
The star had been posting a series of very explicit videos and images for his legion of subscribers on the adult-only website.
Sources close to the star – who was paired with Johannes Radebe on Strictly - said: 'John has been telling friends he feels really empowered by posting what he wants.
'He's in amazing shape and is proud of how far he has come.
'He's says it really has nothing to do with money and it's not about helping fund his bakery business.
'John doesn't care what anyone else thinks.
"He's really happy with the content he is creating.'

Alan Sheehan says Swansea plan to build on buzz of Snoop Dogg becoming co-owner

The 53-year-old American rapper joined a growing list of celebrity investors in British football last month by becoming part of a Swansea ownership group that already included Croatia midfield great Luka Modric. Multi award-winning Snoop said Swansea's 'underdog' story 'really struck a chord with me' and his vast following on social media – 89 million on Instagram and 20.5 million on X – quickly learned about the Welsh club and his love for Joe's ice cream in the city. Swansea City is delighted to announce global rap superstar and multi-platinum selling artist @SnoopDogg has become the club's latest high-profile co-owner and investor. 👉 — Swansea City AFC (@SwansOfficial) July 17, 2025 'To have Snoop and Luka on board is a massive benefit,' Swansea boss Sheehan said ahead of Saturday's league opener at Middlesbrough. 'There is a buzz, obviously. As a football club you have to become more appealing commercially, to be more competitive, and appeal to the wider nation. 'It's different to how it was maybe when I was a player, but I understand why, and I totally welcome it. 'Rome wasn't built in a day, but there are big plans for the football club. 'It's about building strong foundations and building that character and resilience within the football club.' Comparisons with Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are unavoidable and already being made. The two Welsh clubs are Championship rivals this season after Wrexham became the first team in the top five tiers of English football to win three successive promotions. A docu-series tracking life at Swansea, on similar lines to the award-winning FX show 'Welcome to Wrexham', is understood to be already in the pipeline. Asked if Swansea – who were relegated in 2018 after seven seasons in the Premier League – were the 'new' Wrexham, Sheehan said: 'No, we're Swansea. We're not new anything. 'Now they're in our division, I suppose, it becomes more there now (rivalry), but we don't play them until December. So I won't really be speaking about them until December.' Modric – who joined the board in April following a takeover led by American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen six months earlier – was unveiled as an AC Milan player on Monday after his trophy-littered 13-year spell at Real Madrid ended this summer. The 39-year-old has played his part in Sheehan's summer recruitment strategy, actively persuading players to join the Welsh club. 'Obviously, his transfer situation… he was unavailable to come here,' smiled Sheehan. 'We've had a few text messages and he's involved. 'Luka has spoke to some players, passed on his knowledge, what he knows about the football club, and the plans that we have for it. 'Snoop and Luka are very invested in the club. They care, they speak through the ownership and the ownership are very good to us.' So will Grammy-nominated Snoop soon be swapping California for Swansea to watch a game? 'I believe so,' said Sheehan. 'But I'm not sure which game yet. It would be very naive and narrow-minded to think two very successful people in what they do could not help us. 'Successful people have a lot in common – a work ethic, a grit, a determination to get where they want to get to. So with Snoop, Luka and the ownership there is a lot of positivity around the football club.'

Outlander Blood of My Blood teaser photos send fans into frenzy ahead of first episode

Outlander fans were thrilled with the update, just hours before the Starz spin-off is set to hit screens on Friday, August 8. Outlander Blood of My Blood is almost here, with the spin-off series just hours away from airing its first episode. Starz announced it will premiere on Friday, August 8. ‌ Fans of the hit historical romance have been thrilled, as they have been served up a snippet just hours before its launch. The official Instagram page for the Starz show shared some teaser photos on Thursday afternoon. ‌ "The Highlands are calling and I must go. #BloodOfMyBlood," the official Instagram account for Outlander captioned the post, which was shared to their 1.9 million followers. ‌ Fans were quick to rush to the post, delighted with the update. "I'm soo excited," one person wrote alongside a string of crying emojis. Another fan echoed: "Can't actually wait! This is going to be so good!," as they shared a string of red hearts. Someone else quipped: "I have a feeling this will be the next heartbeat of our lives," as they referenced the magic that the original Outlander franchise brought to thousands across the globe. ‌ "The actors are really well chosen," wrote another as they shared their excitement for the debut on Friday. A fan echoing the sentiment and praising the actors, chimed: "I can't wait to see the story unfold and the casting is spot on". "You knew exactly what you were doing sharing these stunning photos when you did and I thank you for it," said another fan. Another added: "Absolutely buzzing. Counting your days to see these four in my screen". Since its debut more than a decade ago, Outlander has amassed a global fanbase. The historical romance series, centring round Claire Randall/Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), saw their love affair quickly capture hearts. ‌ However with the show nearing its end with the eighth and final season set for 2026, the phenomenon is expanding in the form of a spin-off to Diana Gabaldon's treasured franchise. Blood of My Blood is set to air to audiences on August 8. The series will follow two new love stories, one which starts on the battlefields of the Western Front during World War I and the other in the meadows of Scotland in the early 18th century. It will unravel the tale of both Jamie and Claire Fraser's parents. ‌ Fans have already been sharing their hopes for the spin-off. One fan stated: "Jamie stated in season one that it was normal for husbands to hit their wives to 'discipline' them, and Jamie expected that afterwards things would just go back to normal, and the wife would be chastened but not hold a grudge." They continued: "If that truly was the norm, and Jamie really did experience that with his mother and father, I hope the show doesn't shy away from showing it. Ellen should be her own character, not a proto-Claire, expecting to be treated according to standards that don't exist in her time." Many of the Outlander fanbase, which is based on Diana Gabaldon's original award-winning novels, are hoping the characters bring as much on-screen energy as both Claire and Jamie did. "I hope they found some actors with amazing chemistry because they will live in the shadow of the original couple's chemistry. I already feel bad for the comparisons that are to come, but I am also really excited about new material," gushed one fan.
