Seahawks just received a break in Elijah Arroyo contract negotiations

The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to report to training camp next week. Meanwhile rookie second-round picks Nick Emmanwori and Elijah Arroyo have yet to sign their rookie deals over a league-wide dispute in guaranteed money in second-round contracts. The current CBA wouldn't allow Emmanwori or Arroyo to attend camp without signed deals, meaning potential holdouts are looming.
The Houston Texans threw negotiations with second-round picks into disarray after making the unprecedented decision to sign No. 35 overall selection Jayden Higgins to a fully-guaranteed contract. The Cleveland Browns followed suit with their 33rd pick Carson Schwesinger. The other 30 second-round draftees had been unsigned ever since, and the Seahawks are especially in a pickle with Emmanwori, who was the pick right after Schwesinger and Higgins.
Though the Emmanwori negotiations remain complicated, Seahawks GM John Schneider just caught a break in talks with Arroyo, his other second-round pick, and he has a division rival to thank. The San Francisco 49ers signed second-round pick Alfred Collins to his rookie contract on Wednesday evening. Collins, the 43rd pick, did NOT receive a fully-guaranteed contract.
Collins saw roughly 87% of his rookie deal guaranteed, according to Pro Football Talk. That's approximately 10% more than the 43rd pick got in guarantees last year, per Mike Florio. With Arroyo being drafted seven picks (No. 50) after Collins, he can no longer realistically expect to sign a fully-guaranteed contract.
The Collins deal serves as a significant breakthrough. Schneider should manage to sign Arroyo to a non-guaranteed rookie deal, one that contains a slight uptick in guarantees compared to last year's 50th pick (following the Collins precedence). Unfortunately for Schneider, the Emmanwori negotiations remain complicated. The Seahawks may have to cave on that front.
At least the Arroyo negotiations should be moving in the right direction after the 49ers' deal with Collins.

Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon makes ESPNs positional rankings list

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon is one of the premier players on Mike Macdonald's defense. Witherspoon was everywhere in 2024, recording a personal-high 98 tackles as a sophomore. He's quickly established himself as a locker room leader and on-field tone setter. ESPN has been releasing their positional rankings daily ahead of training camp. The series recently concluded with the cornerbacks list. Witherspoon clocked in at No. 10 overall, while Riq Woolen received a handful of votes. "Witherspoon has back-to-back Pro Bowls to match two consecutive top 10s to start his career -- achieving the latter in close fashion," Jeremy Fowler wrote. "Witherspoon won a tiebreaker with former No. 1 Jalen Ramsey for the 10th spot." "Extremely urgent, aggressive, excellent top-down speed from the perimeter or out of the slot," an NFL personnel evaluator said. "Violent tackler, lower body twitch, good blitzer, disruptive." Added an NFL coordinator: "Better nickel than outside corner in my opinion but he makes splash plays. You need to account for him." It's also true Witherspoon wasn't as effective at making splash plays. He recorded just nine pass breakups in 2024, compared to 16 as a rookie in 2023. Witherspoon also had just one sack, versus three in 2023. This offseason, Coach Macdonald is tasked with placing the do-it-all corner in positions to make a game-changing impact.

Seahawks, Bucs will both wear throwback uniforms in Week 5 matchup

The Seahawks and Buccaneers are both marking their 50th NFL season in 2025 and they'll be breaking out some vintage threads as part of the celebration. Both teams announced that they will be wearing throwback uniforms when they meet in Seattle in Week 5. That will mean the white jersey version of the Buccaneers' Creamsicle look and royal blue jerseys for the Seahawks. Both teams will also sport the helmets that they wore in the past. The look will be similar to the ones that the two teams sported when they met during their inaugural season in 1976. The Seahawks prevailed 13-10 for one of their two wins on the season. The Buccaneers went 0-14 to open their NFL run. The Bucs will also be wearing the home version of their throwbacks for their Week 3 home opener against the Jets.

Bleacher Report poses Seahawks' biggest questions heading into training camp

The Seattle Seahawks' rookie class reported to training camp earlier this week. The veterans will join them on 7/22. Excellent news arrived Thursday evening when rookie safety Nick Emmanwori signed his rookie contract, ending a dispute over guaranteed money. The Seahawks retooled their roster this offseason in an attempt to better position themselves to compete for the NFC West division title. Bleacher Report recently wrote an article outlining every team's financial situation heading into camp, while also posing some questions about the depth chart. The Seahawks must address those concerns at camp. "Will the interior offensive line be good enough to give Sam Darnold a shot," is the question B/R's Alex Ballentine poses while noting the Jets possess roughly $31.2 million in current cap space. It's fair to question the Seahawks' interior offensive line. New starting quarterback Sam Darnold needs quality protection if he's to be effective this season. "Sam Darnold resurrected his career in Minnesota last season," Ballentine added. "He was able to overcome the ghosts of his past because he was playing behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. The Vikings led the league in pocket time last season. That was critical to Darnold's success as dealing with pressure has historically been his Achilles' heel." It's a legitimate concern. First-round guard Grey Zabel will start at left guard. Center and right guard will both be decided by returning blockers who struggled last season. Olu Oluwatimi is the favorite to start at center, with Jalen Sundell pushing him in camp. Anthony Bradford and Christian Haynes are competing at right guard. Darnold's 2025 success (or failures) may be determined by the protection (or lack thereof) he receives from the interior offensive line.
