YAMUNANAGAR:
In a landmark verdict, a Yamunanagar court sentenced a man to death for the abduction, rape, and murder of a 6-year-old girl, marking what is believed to be the first such conviction under India's new
Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
(BNS) law.
The ruling brings closure to a case that shook the village of Chhachhrauli, Yamunanagar.
On September 20 last year, the young girl went missing while playing outside her home. Her body was discovered later that night in nearby fields, where she had been strangled to death. Investigations revealed that the accused, identified as Rajesh, abducted the child, took her to the fields, raped her, and then murdered her to cover up his crime.
The brutality of the act left the community in shock and mourning.
Swift police action led to Rajesh's arrest after one villager reported seeing him take the girl toward the fields, and another witnessed him returning alone. The accused had returned home to change clothes before fleeing. The police apprehended him soon after.
The case was heard in the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court by additional sessions judge (ASJ) Ranjana Aggarwal.
The prosecution, led by district attorney Gurdev Tandon, presented a watertight case, bolstered by the testimonies of 18 witnesses. The two eyewitnesses confirmed seeing the accused with the victim and leaving the crime scene. Forensic evidence further sealed the case, with the accused's DNA matching samples found at the scene.
In delivering the death penalty, the court emphasised the gravity of the crime and its devastating impact on the victim's family and society.
Legal experts note that this may be the first instance of a death sentence under the POCSO act within the framework of the BNS, a new legal code aimed at strengthening India's criminal justice system.
The victim's family expressed relief and gratitude for the verdict, saying, 'The court has given the accused the punishment he deserves. We have received justice for our daughter.'
This verdict serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of swift investigations, credible eyewitness accounts, and forensic evidence in securing justice. For the people of Yamunanagar, it is a bittersweet moment—a step toward healing and a call for greater vigilance to protect the most vulnerable among us.

R.G. Kar protest rally: two Kolkata doctors appear before police

Senior doctors Dr. Punya Brata Gun and Dr. Tamonas Chaudhuri, who were issued summons over a bicycle protest rally demanding justice for the R.G. Kar victim, appeared at the Thakurpukur police station in Kolkata on Monday. Multiple protest rallies were organised on August 8 and 9 by activists and civil society groups to mark one year of the rape and murder of the doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Gun and Dr. Chaudhuri are associated with Abhaya Mancha, a civil society group formed to seek justice for the victim. On August 8, Abhaya Mancha had called for a bicycle rally from Thakurpukur to College Street. 'The summons were issued on August 9 regarding restrictions on cycle movement on the National Highway at a particular time. Today [Monday], my clients appeared before the investigating officers and were asked questions such as their place of residence. My clients said they have been on the streets for a year demanding justice for the R.G. Kar victim. Instead of nabbing the real culprits, the police are sending summons to protesters,' advocate Shamim Ahmed, who is representing the two doctors, told The Hindu. In the summons sent by the police, it was mentioned that it pertains to an investigation of a case lodged against them on August 8 under multiple sections of the BNS, including 285 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation), 235 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), and 3(5) (committing a crime together with a shared intention). Section 8B of the National Highway Act (punishment for mischief by injury to NH) was also mentioned. 'Intimidation bid' 'We do not know why we have been summoned, but it is likely because we are at the forefront of the protests. This is probably an attempt to intimidate other protesters,' Dr. Gun told mediapersons before entering the police station. Dr. Chaudhuri said during the bicycle rally, protesters and the police 'exercised mutual cooperation and it concluded smoothly and successfully'.
