The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) has confirmed to PEOPLE that a body was 'found in an off-base wooded area" in Norfolk, Va., on Monday, June 9
The body was found during the search for 21-year-old Angelina Petra Resendiz, who was reported missing on Thursday, May 29
An NCIS spokesperson said the Norfolk Medical Examiner's Office is "conducting an autopsy and working to positively identify the victim" as the family speaks outA family is speaking out after a body has been found in the search for a missing Navy sailor in Virginia.
On Monday, June 9, a body was 'found in an off-base wooded area in Norfolk,' the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) confirmed to PEOPLE. The body was located in the Broad Creek area of the city, according to NBC affiliate WAVY-TV and CBS affiliate WTKR.
The discovery comes as authorities search for 21-year-old Angelina Petra Resendiz, who was last seen 'at her barracks in Miller Hall at Naval Station Norfolk' on Thursday, May 29, the Virginia State Police previously announced.
The Norfolk Medical Examiner's Office is now 'conducting an autopsy and working to positively identify the victim,' a spokesperson for NCIS tells PEOPLE.
In a statement shared with WTKR and posted to Instagram by KMK Productions on Monday, the Resendiz family said they 'are awaiting the results of DNA testing to determine whether recently discovered remains are those of Angelina.'
'The family of Seaman Angelina Resendiz is heartbroken and deeply concerned over her sudden and unexplained disappearance,' they continued. 'Angelina is a loving, compassionate, and devoted individual who has always prioritized the well-being of her family and those around her.
The Resendiz family said Angelina's disappearance 'has caused immense grief for all who know and love her,' adding, 'We remain prayerful and hopeful for clarity and resolution.'
'We urge anyone with information about Angelina's whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance to come forward,' they said. 'Your help could be crucial in bringing her home and providing answers.'
They also thanked law enforcement and investigators for their 'ongoing efforts,' as well as 'everyone who has offered support, shared prayers, and stood with us in the search for Angelina.'
KMK Productions did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
Angelina 'was working on the USS James E. Williams at the time of her disappearance,' according to a GoFundMe campaign started to support her mother, Esmerelda Castle, in her search for her daughter.
Castle said friends told her Angelina was with another sailor around the time she disappeared, NBC affiliate KCEN-TV reported.

She previously told ABC affiliate WVEC that her daughter was regularly in contact with friends and family before her disappearance, but suddenly stopped responding on May 29. She also said that her daughter had 'spent no money' and 'made no calls' since she disappeared.
While speaking to WTKR, Castle said that a fan at her daughter's barrack's 'was still on' and other personal items, like food and a yoga mat, were 'untouched.'
"I love her. And she doesn't deserve to just be a missing person,' Castle said, per KCEN-TV. She added, 'Angie belongs to everyone. These kids, these mothers, these sons, these daughters, they're all of ours."
'No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed at this time,' the NCIS spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

An L.A. high school senior was walking his dog. Then ICE agents grabbed him

Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz was walking his family's dog in Van Nuys on a recent morning when he was taken into custody by federal immigration officials, according to authorities and published reports. Guerrero-Cruz, who turned 18 this month, was set to start his senior year at Reseda Charter High School on Thursday, according to a GoFundMe page set up to support his family and legal fees. Instead, he's being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending removal from the United States, the agency confirmed in a statement to KTLA-TV. 'Benjamin Guerrero-Cruz, an illegal alien from Chile, overstayed his visa by more than two years, abusing the Visa Waiver Program under which he entered the United States, which required him to depart the United States on March 15, 2023,' the statement read. The department did not immediately respond to an email from The Times for further comment. When he was taken into custody Friday morning, immigration agents tied his dog to a tree and then unclipped his collar, allowing the animal to run loose on Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the GoFundMe page. 'He is more than just a student — he is a devoted son, a caring brother, a loyal friend, and a valued member of our community. He carries a tremendous amount of responsibility at home, helping care for his five-month-old twin brothers and his six-year-old brother. He is a good student, with a kind heart, who has always stepped up for his family,' according to the GoFundMe page. Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. Alberto Carvalho said during a news conference Thursday that he spoke to the boy's mother, who described the dismal conditions her son is facing in custody. She said her son was in a small holding area filled with 40 men, most much older than her son. 'He is 18 years old, but he's a kid. He has not been exposed to anything in his life,' Carvalho said, recounting his discussion with Guerrero-Cruz's mother. 'He drinks water once a day. The food is insufficient. Mom said that there was not enough room for everybody to sit or lie down at the same time.' During their conversation, Carvalho said, she 'was having difficulty holding back tears. She was crying with every word that came out of her mouth.' A friend of Guerrero-Cruz's, identified as Ronny C., said in a statement that the young man's soccer team was devastated by his sudden disappearance. 'On the field, he was rock-solid—always showed up, worked hard, and could be counted on week after week. Off the field, he was just as reliable: kind, respectful, and someone who lifted up the people around him. He brought consistency, heart, and a quiet strength that made the team better in every way,' Ronny C. said. Guerrero-Cruz's arrest comes amid already heightened fears among Los Angeles students and parents over whether they might be targeted by immigration officials while traveling to or from school. A person with knowledge of Guerrero-Cruz's situation who declined to be named for fear of reprisal confirmed that he attended the high school in Reseda for his junior year. The person added that teachers are working to 'make sure all students feel safe' despite the ongoing raids. Agents have already focused enforcement efforts at LAUSD schools at least twice since the Trump administration launched raids targeting undocumented immigrants this year. In April, immigration agents attempted to enter two elementary schools seeking information about several students but were turned away by administrators. On Monday, federal agents reportedly drew their guns on and handcuffed a 15-year-old boy with disabilities outside Arleta High School. Federal officials said they were looking to apprehend a suspected MS-13 gang member and instead took the person's cousin by mistake. The teen was ultimately released. Carvalho has called for limits on immigration enforcement near schools, saying it impedes student learning. 'When children witness peers, parents, or other individuals detained, the image is not easily erased,' Carvalho said in a statement Monday. 'These moments imprint on young minds, distracting them from academic lessons and replacing intellectual curiosity with worry.' Teen missing for 1 week after going on vacation in Florida found dead: Sheriff

An 18-year-old from North Carolina who had been missing for one week after vacationing with relatives in Florida has been found dead, according to officials. Giovanni Pelletier, an 18-year-old who was described as "smart, kind and full of life," disappeared early on Aug. 1 "under deeply troubling and suspicious circumstances," according to the family's GoFundMe page. Pelletier was visiting Englewood, Florida, with his mother and her fiancé and wanted to reconnect with relatives from his biological father's family, Desiree Pelletier, who is Giovanni's aunt and sister of his mother, told ABC News. While he was unable to see his father, who is incarcerated, he made plans to see three of his cousins on that side of the family, his aunt said. With only a few days left in his vacation, Pelletier's cousins picked him up at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 to take him on the three-hour drive to their house in Mims, Florida, his aunt said. His mother was planning on picking him up the next day, according to Desiree Pelletier. But within 25 minutes of leaving, he sent his mom a text: "Help me," his aunt said. That was the last time his mother heard from him, according to his aunt. A family member found Pelletier's body on Aug. 8 in a retention pond across the street from where his backpack and phone were located in Bradenton, Florida, his aunt confirmed to ABC News on Sunday. The teen's body was found exactly one week after he disappeared, his aunt said. After extensive forensic testing, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC News on Thursday that the body found in the pond was identified to be Pelletier. Identification of the body was confirmed through dental records, and "additional forensic testing was required due to the condition of his body," the sheriff's office said. The cause of death remains undetermined "pending toxicology results, which are expected to take several weeks," the sheriff's office said. "Detectives are actively pursuing multiple leads to learn more about the circumstances surrounding Pelletier's death. There are still no signs of foul play," the sheriff's office said. Desiree Pelletier said her sister, the teen's mother, "is broken" by the news of her son's death. MORE: Body identified as California teen reported missing days ago During a press conference with the family on Tuesday, they said they are "devastated" and had been "hoping for a better outcome." The family also said they are hiring an attorney to help with the case. The day the teenager disappeared, his mother could not get a hold of him and immediately contacted authorities, Desiree Pelletier said. The teen's mother also reached out to the cousins who were with Pelletier, who said the group had been smoking marijuana, which is when the 18-year-old began to panic and pull out a knife, Pelletier's aunt noted. But his aunt said that alleged behavior "is not Gio" and that it does "not align" with who he is. The cousins also told police that Pelletier "began to act erratically before exiting the vehicle," according to a statement from the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office last week. The cousins claimed they were driving on I-75 when Pelletier got out near SR-70, authorities said. On Friday, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said the cousins had been interviewed by officials and "continue to be fully cooperative in all aspects of the investigation." Officials also said they "took in the vehicle that the three young men were driving at the time they traveled to the West Coast of Florida."

Influencer Pilot, 19, Still 'Stuck' in Antarctica After Case Was Suspended, Claims Officials 'Won't Let Me Fly Back'

The pilot was arrested on June 28 and accused of landing in Antarctica without permission NEED TO KNOW Influencer Ethan Guo, 19, speaks out after his alleged detainment in Antarctica, following accusations he landed on Chilean territory without permission Guo, who aims to raise $1 million for cancer research, was arrested on June 28 and later agreed to donate $30,000 to a local charity and avoid Chilean territory for three years Despite reports he is allowed to leave, Guo claims he remains stuck in Antarctica, sharing his story in a statement obtained by PEOPLE on Aug. 14 Influencer Ethan Guo is speaking out following his alleged detainment after being accused of landing on Chilean territory in Antarctica without permission. PEOPLE previously reported that Guo, 19, began his journey at Genève Aéroport in 2024 "to become the first person in history to fly solo to all seven continents in a small aircraft. The influencer also plans to raise $1 million for cancer research, per his website. However, Guo was arrested on June 28 by authorities and accused of landing in Antarctica without permission and submitting a false flight plan. He was granted permission to leave Antarctica six weeks after the arrest. This came after he agreed to donate $30,000 to a children's cancer foundation within 30 days and not to reenter Chilean territory for three years, PEOPLE reported earlier this month. In a statement to PEOPLE obtained on Thursday, Aug. 14, the pilot claimed that he's been unable to leave Antarctica. Related: "I've maintained from the very beginning that I am innocent, so I'm grateful to finally have that officially recognized," he said. "This process has been lengthy, and I believe it could have been resolved much sooner had all evidence been considered from the start." "I'm still in Antarctica awaiting approval for my departure flight, and I sincerely hope that clearance will be granted soon so I, and my plane, can continue on my original mission of raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital," he concluded. Guo also said he was "grateful" and "relieved" that the charges against him have been dropped, per ABC News. He claimed that he's lost weight during his alleged detainment on the island, saying he felt like a "prisoner" and that authorities "won't let me leave," according to the outlet. Guo's lawyer also told ABC News that "despite his exoneration, the Chilean government has not allowed him to fly his airworthy plane off the base." PEOPLE has contacted the Chilean national law enforcement for comment. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The content creator also claimed that authorities had told him he couldn't leave due to a number of reasons, including poor weather, the plane not being in the right condition, there not being enough fuel and their belief that Guo is not skilled enough to fly. "All four of those statements are objectively false," Guo told ABC News. "I have all the paperwork. I have insurance that even covers Antarctica. The plane has enough fuel, the plane is working. And I am a qualified pilot." Guo also said he wouldn't be able to use a boat to depart due to its infrequent schedule. He added that his goal is to return to his journey. "I want to be able to continue to fight against cancer and continue the mission," he said. In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Guo's representatives at Croft & Johnson LLP, wrote, "Despite his exoneration, the Chilean government has not allowed him to fly his airworthy plane off the base, resulting in his de facto confinement on the island for a month and a half." 'The stress of this ordeal has caused a severe deterioration in his health, including a 10kg weight loss and a diagnosis of pericarditis (inflammation of the heart's outer membrane)," the statement continued. Guo also shared the letter on his Instagram Stories before writing in another post that he was 'free' and that the plane was 'in flying condition.' 'But I'm still stuck in Antarctica because they won't let me fly back,' he added. He then linked a St. Jude Fundraising page that has so far raised $134,677 out of a $1,000,000 goal.
