Chinese Premier, GCC Leaders Depart After ASEAN-GCC, ASEAN-GCC-China Summits

SEPANG, May 28 (Bernama) -- Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states' leaders and their delegations departed for home today following the conclusion of the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Li and his delegation boarded a special flight at 9.15 am from the Bunga Raya Complex of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). They were sent off by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
At around 10 am, the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, also left for home aboard a special aircraft. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali was present to bid him farewell.
Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs of Oman, Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik al Said, departed for home at 2.33 pm, sent off by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Meanwhile, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao left at 11.50 am aboard a special aircraft, and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was present to see him off.
All the leaders were given a red carpet ceremonial send-off and a guard-of-honour mounted by 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (Ceremonial).
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his opening remarks at the ASEAN-GCC Summit, described the gathering as exceptional in the context of Southeast Asia
Anwar highlighted the presence of ASEAN leaders alongside representatives from the GCC countries as a testament to the growing mutual trust and friendship between the two blocs.
The 46th ASEAN Summit was held on Monday under Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', and it was followed by the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

Malaysia Seeks To Deploy ASEAN Monitoring Team To Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Zone
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said he has requested Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to formally communicate with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia to allow Malaysian teams to enter conflict areas in both countries alongside the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). He said the AOT comprises representatives from ASEAN member states and will be deployed continuously on the ground to ensure and monitor that there are no violations of the ceasefire agreement. 'This is a heavy task because there is a border of about 840 kilometres that needs to be monitored. For this assignment, we are receiving logistical support from the United States,' he told reporters after being inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Resilience College (MKN) here today. He said following the conclusion of the General Border Committee (GBC), the parties involved had agreed under the ceasefire agreement to form an Interim Observer Team (IOT), comprising defence attachés from ASEAN countries. Mohd Nizam said the team is led by Malaysia's Defence Advisers in Bangkok and Phnom Penh. 'The first step for this team is to hold a briefing in Bangkok for 75 senior officers from Thailand on the measures that need to be taken. 'The same will be done in Phnom Penh tomorrow and the following day before they make visits to the conflict zones,' he said. Mohd Nizam said the main mandate of the IOT is to ensure that the ceasefire is upheld and to investigate any reported violations from both sides. Thailand and Cambodia had previously agreed to strictly observe the ceasefire along their shared border, with both sides maintaining their current troop positions and not increasing military strength.

Zahid: New high-level committee to bridge Malaysia's rural–urban gap
KUALA LUMPUR: Twelve ministries have been appointed as permanent members of the newly established High-Level Committee (HLC) for Rural Development, which will convene at least twice a year to coordinate policies and initiatives aimed at accelerating rural transformation. Chaired by Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the HLC serves as the nation's highest strategic platform for aligning rural development efforts across the country. Zahid said the committee would tackle overlapping ministerial functions, limited resources, and siloed policy implementation that had hampered programme effectiveness. "Rural development faces increasingly complex challenges. The development gap between urban and rural areas must be addressed urgently so that the 8.1 million rural residents are not left behind in the nation's progress," he said in a statement. Citing a UNDP report, he said that no Asean country would likely achieve its Sustainable Development Goals for rural development by 2030 without coordinated action in infrastructure, workforce and human capital development, and poverty eradication. The HLC will be supported by a working committee focused on six priority areas: education, entrepreneurship, rural economy, technology and digitalisation, rural tourism, and rural infrastructure. Key issues discussed at the inaugural meeting in Parliament today included improving access to rural schools, boosting village tourism, enhancing care for senior citizens and special needs groups, and upgrading rural health facilities. Zahid also announced four cross-ministry initiatives already under way: the UP_TVET centralised application system for Technical and Vocational Education and Training courses, the Village Homestay programme for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the Mega 3D Carnival (KM3D) entrepreneurship platform, and the Single Application System for SBP-MRSM enrolment from 2026. He said the committee's work aligned with the 13th Malaysia Plan, which promotes integrated governance to minimise duplication, optimise resources, and deliver faster outcomes. "Through the HLC, the government aims to reduce youth migration to cities by creating more rural opportunities, developing rural techno-entrepreneurs, strengthening regional development authorities through new business models, and building a competitive rural tourism sector. "Rural development is not just about building physical infrastructure — it is about building the future and unlocking the potential of our people. With a whole-of-government approach, I am confident the HLC will create a prosperous, sustainable rural ecosystem that drives national progress," he added.
