Sarawak pioneers port innovations with launch of Samalaju's smart barrier gate system
SAMALAJU (July 17): Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd (SIPSB) officially launched its smart barrier gate system yesterday.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi, who officiated at the event, said the installation of the system is a celebration of Sarawak's emergence as a pioneer in smart port technology, spearheading the adoption of advanced systems that place the state at the forefront of the industry in this region.
'The future of port operations lies in smart, automated systems that enhance efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of security and reliability,' he said.
The Samalaju assemblyman explained that the new system integrates multiple cutting-edge technologies, including Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Artificial Image Recording (AIR), Licence Plate Recognition (LPR), and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
Majang said these innovations enable the automatic identification of vehicles, container numbers, and streamlined access control thus drastically reducing processing times and minimising human error.
'This smart gate system reflects an impressive level of technical sophistication. The ability to automate container and vehicle identification while boosting security is exactly the kind of advancement Sarawak needs to remain globally competitive,' he said.
Majang pointed out that this innovation reaffirms Sarawak's strategic role as a regional logistics gateway, connecting Southeast Asia to the world as well as supports Sarawak's broader ambition of becoming a key hub for trade and commerce.
He urged players in the maritime and logistics industry to embrace similar transformations.
'This is the kind of innovation we need across the board. I encourage all industry stakeholders to follow SIPSB's lead and continue exploring technologies that improve efficiency, reliability, and competitiveness,' he said.
The smart barrier gate initiative aligns with Sarawak's digital economy aspirations and is expected to strengthen the operational capacity of its ports in handling growing trade volumes with enhanced security and speed.

Kedah water agency raising tariffs, says to sustain water supply in state
ALOR SETAR, Aug 3 — Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) is implementing a tariff adjustment through a review of the Tariff Setting Mechanism for all categories of users in Kedah, taking into account the company's operational expenditure (opex) and capital expenditure (capex). In a statement, Sada said the tariff adjustment came into effect on Friday and will be reflected in the September billing cycle. 'The tariff adjustment is a crucial requirement for the water operator to ensure long-term sustainability of the water supply in the state. It is also in line with Sada's ongoing efforts to improve service quality through the development of water infrastructure projects currently being actively implemented by the state government and Sada itself. 'Key focus areas include the replacement of old and deteriorated pipes, which are the main contributors to the non-revenue water (NRW) issue. To address water supply shortages, several new water treatment plant (WTP) projects are being developed, including the Pelubang WTP, Kodiang WTP Phase 1, Padang Saga WTP Phases 4 and 5, Sidam Kiri WTP Phase 1, Sungai Karangan WTP Phase 1, and the construction of a compact plant at Kulim Hi-Tech,' it said. Sada added that repair works for distribution systems and pump houses were also being actively carried out to address low water pressure issues in several areas. It said additional revenue from the tariff adjustment would be used to cover operating costs, repair and maintenance of existing systems, development of new, more sustainable and efficient water supply systems, improvements in service quality, including the company's capacity to respond to consumer complaints more swiftly, and to reduce the NRW rate in Kedah. 'The adjustment also considers the need to meet the company's operating costs for 2025, which are expected to increase by six per cent, covering key components such as electricity, wages, raw water charges, and chemicals used in the water treatment process,' it said. Sada stated that these rising costs exerted direct pressure on the company's operational capacity to deliver efficient, stable and quality water supply services to the people of Kedah. 'This tariff adjustment is seen as a strategic step to ensure the company's financial stability and to strengthen Sada's ability to continuously plan and implement service improvements,' it added. Overall, the impact of the tariff adjustment was described as reasonable and not burdensome. Sada said the adjustment had gone through a thorough review with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and was being implemented in phases to avoid burdening users. According to the statement, the approach taken strikes a balance between user affordability and the need for the water operator to meet its operating expenses. 'Sada expresses its deep appreciation and gratitude for the support provided by all parties, especially the Federal Government, the State Government, SPAN, and consumers,' it added. — Bernama

He said despite technical challenges, including an issue at pier number 52, the contractor had assured the matter would be resolved soon. 'We discussed about the bridge being usable by Gawai 2026. We hope all outstanding issues will be resolved and we will continue to visit and monitor the progress of this project,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report after a working visit to the project site in Sebuyau today. According to the report, the 4.8km bridge forms part of the Sarawak government's ongoing effort to strengthen coastal road connectivity and will fully replace the long-standing ferry service between Sebuyau and Triso. The RM848.7 million project began construction on Jan 7, 2021, and is one of 16 major bridge projects currently underway across Sarawak. Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak is actively on the ground to assess and discuss any arising issues. 'Our aim is to minimise the number of delayed or problematic projects in the state,' he said. He also revealed another major bridge project has commenced at Miri Marina, with a total cost of RM6.53 billion. 'The government's aspiration is for all these investments to have a direct impact on the state's economic growth through improved infrastructure,' he said. Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the project status by JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, along with the technical leadership from Perbena Emas and the Sebuyau District Office. PwSC implements urgent measures to mitigate water supply issues
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Water Supply Corporation (PWSC) has implemented immediate measures to reduce disruptions and low water pressure during peak hours in several areas across the state, particularly in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), amid the current hot weather. Its chief executive officer, Datuk K. Pathmanathan, said the company's move to optimise its pipeline system, including valve adjustments, to channel more water to affected areas, has helped shorten the duration of interruptions. Currently, consumers experience low water pressure during the peak hours of between 6pm and 11pm, but efforts are in progress to reduce the disruption to just two to three hours daily. "July and August are the most challenging months due to higher demand and usage during the hot season, especially with ongoing development projects. "During peak hours, some 3,000 to 4,000 consumer accounts, mostly in SPS, are affected by low pressure, and we've even received complaints of complete supply loss for three to five hours," he told reporters at the Air Itam Dam yesterday. He was speaking after officiating the Auxiliary Police Hub of Perbadanan Bekalan Air Holdings Bhd, launched by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Also present was Penang Acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin Pathmanathan said that any further increase in water pressure could raise the level of non-revenue water, including the risk of leaks and burst pipes, as parts of the piping system in the affected areas are more than 50 years old. He noted that two major projects have been approved as long-term solutions for SPS. The first is the Sungai Kerian Water Treatment Plant project, with a capacity of 114 million litres per day (MLD), which is already underway and expected to be completed within 14 to 18 months. "The second is a new 50 MLD Dissolved Air Flotation water treatment module at Sungai Kerian, which was recently approved by the board of directors and is expected to be completed within 12 to 14 months," he said. Affected areas in SPS include Sungai Bakap, Nibong Tebal, Jawi, Simpang Ampat, Bukit Tambun, and Batu Kawan.
