The Chase viewers rage as contestant's 'correct' answer is rejected

Metro16-05-2025

Fans of The Chase have raged online after a 'correct' answer given by a contestant was rejected by host Bradley Walsh for a pedantic reason.
The ITV quiz show, which started in 2009, sees four players aiming to land a huge prize jackpot by answering more questions than the show's experts, aka Chasers.
It's meant to be a tough quiz to crack, with hundreds of contestants not having the requisite knowledge to take home the big prize.
But one viewer was denied a point by Bradley, 64, during Wednesday's episode, despite giving a 'correct' answer during the tense final round, which sees contestants answering quick-fire questions to stay ahead of the chaser.
Facing off against chaser Darragh Ennis, aka The Menace, teammates Gary, Sarah, Ailsa, and George took a fair chunk of money into the final round.
Their total was £48,000, and that was after George took the minus £9,000 offer, knocking his team's potential takings down from a whopping £14,250 each.

But their impressive game hit an unexpected stumbling block when George answered a question 'correctly', only to be told by Bradley that he'd given the wrong answer after all.
When he was asked, 'The term 'carjack' is a blend of 'car' and what other word?' George confidently answered that the other word was 'hijacked'.
Expecting to be given the point, the hopefuls were denied it and were eventually caught by The Menace with very little between the two sides.
Bradley then explained that the answer George was actually looking for was 'hijack' – which, admittedly, is a different word, even if it is incredibly similar.
After initially explaining this to the team, the Blankety Blank and Gladiators presenter added: 'Bad luck with hijacked! You needed hijack.'
However, viewers at home were less than happy with the result, with several taking to social media to lodge their complaints over the incident.
Reacting on X, Swalk commented, 'Hijack – that was harsh!' while Jonty Sapier also complained with an expletive-laden post accompanied by an angry face emoji.

Also unhappy was Rob Smith, who said, 'Hijack … Hijacked. This show is getting [worse] every day,' while Bye Horse was dumbfounded: 'Hijacked instead of hijack? [No chance]!'
No matter how righteous the viewers' anger was, The Chase is known to be a rock-solid quiz show; hence, it is still one of the most popular on TV, pulling in 3-5million viewers every day as of 2024.
In fact, it's been watched by so many people over the years that some viewers think they've spotted how to work out the conclusion to each episode.
Fans think that when the Chaser is allowed to explain the thinking behind their answer, it indicates that the final round might be about to be cut very short by a victorious Chaser. More Trending
'There's a lot of waffle in this episode, does that mean the final chase is going to be over very quickly?', Jason posted on X while watching the quiz play out in February.
'The way in which *everyone* is talking the hind legs off a donkey here suggests a target of about three in the Final Chase and a lot of time to have to fill,' user Mysterion_Voice commented.

Haunted doll's handler says it's not responsible for disasters while on tour

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A cursed doll rumored to have gone missing while touring the US with a traveling exhibit is being blamed for local disasters including a fire and a jailbreak. The 'Annabelle' doll, which some believe is demon-possessed and was featured in The Conjuring horror films, is on a paranormal tour along with other items belonging to her ghost hunter owners. Word on the street in mid-May was that Anabelle vanished while stopping at the Ghost City Tours office in New Orleans. It happened to be the same week that a fire tore through a nearby plantation and 10 prisoners escaped from a jail. But Tony Spera, the owner of the Warren Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut, said that Annabelle is 'safely back' there locked in her display case. 'You know, it's easy for rumors to start. The fact of the matter is, that doll was never out of our sight, never out of our control,' Spera told NBC News this week. 'It's in a protective case that many precautions were taken to make it safe.' Paranormal investigator Ryan Buell sought to further quell rumors by posting a video on Facebook on May 24 of himself at the museum. 'She's not in Chicago, she never was in Chicago, and she's not missing because she's right behind me,' said Buell, while pointing the camera towards him with the doll sitting in the case over his shoulder. Still, social media users and conspiracy theorists have been skeptical about those accounts of Annabelle's whereabouts. A blaze destroyed the Nottoway Plantation House between Baton Rouge and New Orleans on May 15, and the very next day, inmates escaped from the Orleans Justice Center. Annabelle was touring in New Orleans on May 13 and 14, and among the precautions that were taken were having a Catholic priest alongside the doll. Some people are 'absolutely convinced' that Ghost City Tours is at fault for the fire and jailbreak, said its founder Tim Nealon. One Facebook user asked why Annabelle wasn't left at the Connecticut museum and wrote on Ghost City Tours' page: 'Did it cross your mind maybe she was there for a reason. Some things are better left alone.' 'I did not think people were taking it seriously, I kept seeing jokes about it on Instagram and TikTok,' Nealon told USA Today. 'But, I didn't realize people were out here like, actually thinking that this was legit.' More Trending Spera said he doesn't blame people for being skeptical. 'If people don't know about the demonic, it's very difficult to believe that these thing are happening,' he said. 'But they do happen.' Annabelle has been on sold-out tours across the US – and Buell said that plans are underway for her to be at the Rock Island Roadhouse Esoteric Expo in Illinois on October 4. Holly Willoughby returns to ITV show as Netflix show axed after one season

Former host Holly Willoughby, alongside Stephen Mulhern, will appear in just one episode of the new six-part series when it airs later this year The second series of ITV's You Bet! will feature Holly Willoughby as a guest star rather than a presenter, as the show takes to the road across the UK. Hosted by Stephen Mulhern, the former hit 80s gameshow promises to be 'bigger and braver' than last year's first run. ‌ Each of the six episodes will have a panel of celebrities who must predict whether or not the plucky challenger will complete their task. ‌ As well as Holly, the celebrity panellists will include Zoe Ball, Rob Beckett, Alesha Dixon, Johnny Vegas, Alison Hammond, Josie Gibson, Danny Jones and Oti Mabuse. Others taking part are Rylan Clark, Judi Love, Josh Widdicombe. Alex Brooker Babatunde Aléshé, Eddie Kadi, Will Best, Nick Mohammed, AJ Odudu, Greg Rutherford and soap brothers Adam and Ryan Thomas. Presenter Stephen last month told the Mirror he was 'gutted' over Holly's departure but appreciated that she'd rung him to tell him that she was pulling out. After the demise of Dancing on Ice, which the pair also hosted together, Holly no longer has any TV shows on ITV. It has been reported that her Netflix show, Bear Hunt, in which celebrities tried to avoid capture by Bear Grylls, is not returning. ‌ Stephen said: 'It'll be interesting to see what Holly's going to do next really. I don't know what. 'I'm gutted she's not doing You Bet - but I've had time to think about it. We've filmed one episode already and it felt very comfortable and it felt good. And I think maybe it is just a one presenter show. 'Bruce Forsyth was the first person to do it, and he did it on his own. Matthew Kelly made it the best show on the telly. So maybe it's happened for the right reasons.' On the new show - You Bet on Tour - he added: 'This time we're hitting the road! Each week I'll be joined by a top celeb panel, as our challengers take on some brilliantly bonkers and amazing challenges. With the title of You Bet Champion on the line, it's going to be unbelievable from the start.'
