Next GE is a question of life and death for UMNO in Pahang: Paya Besar MP

Focus Malaysia29-06-2025
PAYA Besar UMNO Division Chief Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah has described the upcoming GE16 as a life-and-death battle for UMNO, crucial to ensuring the future of the next generations in Pahang.
Speaking at the 30th Paya Besar UMNO Division Meeting at Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Kuantan on Saturday, he said GE16 is not just about electing representatives but about shaping the state's future direction.
'For us, GE16 is a life-and-death battlefield. It's not just about electing representatives but about determining the future of our children and grandchildren in Pahang,' he said.
The Paya Besar MP emphasized that UMNO cannot afford to be negligent, as it would significantly affect the future of the party and the state.
'If we are careless or negligent, we will not only lose power but also the right to determine the fate of our people, our state, and the party we love.
'We protect UMNO today, and UMNO will protect our children tomorrow. If we defend our power today, tomorrow the people will continue to enjoy a just and caring government,' he added.
Despite past electoral setbacks, Mohd Shahar said UMNO remains hopeful, noting that in the previous election, out of 24 District Voting Centres (PDM) in the division, UMNO won only six at the state assembly level and 13 at the parliamentary level.
He said the division is implementing a 3R strategy—retain, reclaim, and reduce—to strengthen its grassroots, recapture lost strongholds, and ensure victory in GE16. —June 29, 2025

Zaid snubbed for turncoat tendency after owing up to UMNO for showing up at ‘Turun Anwar' rally

FORMER de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has found himself trolled by Madani government backers that he is unwanted by UMNO after he 'proudly' admitted having attended Saturday's (July 26) Turun Anwar rally. This came about after UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated the likelihood of an internal probe on party members who attended the PAS-inspired event at Dataran Merdeka. According to Zahid who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, UMNO as a component of the unity alliance firmly adheres to the principle of supporting and strengthening the Madani government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I want to see first who is present. My team and I will ask why they are present. We want to know the reason for their presence there,' he had told a media conference after officiating the Raub Division UMNO representative meeting in Raub, Pahang yesterday (July 27). This statement promoted the opposition-slant Zaid who became an UMNO member 'by default' while he served as the defence attorney momentarily for incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak to owe up without any second thought. 'Well, let me make it easy for them: I was there. Not only that; I gave speeches too,' he penned on X. Heard that Umno is now checking on members who took part in the 26 July Rally. Well, let me make it easy for them: I was there. Not only that; I gave speeches too. In his self-defence, Zaid further stressed that he did not lie nor 'betray anyone' by virtue of joining the rally. 'I didn't promise not to work with DAP or Anwar, only to turn around and do the opposite,' he cynically justified. 'I didn't participate in the charade about the hidden addendum. If speaking the truth is now a punishable offence in UMNO, then perhaps they should look at themselves in the mirror before judging others.' This is when brickbats were hurled at Zaid for assuming that he is an asset in UMNO when the actual fact is that 'you're irrelevant'. 'Do you seriously think UMNO need you?' wondered one commenter. 'I wanted to tell you to grow up but can you? You're like an 'old turkey' with tough meat that can't be softened even if boiled with papaya roots. LOL.' Others chided him by criticising him for his frog-like nature of 'leaping from one party to another' while 'playing all sides'. As such, his presence or absence from UMNO is immaterial if his heart lies in the struggle of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. The bottom line, as some commenters aptly put it, is for Zaid who had also been previously associated with DAP, KITA (Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air) and PKR to have the decency to just quit UMNO if he feels that he cannot longer toe the party's line. – July 28, 2025 Main image credit: Wan Ahmad Fayhsal/Facebook

Umno gears up for Sabah polls, aims to strengthen state presence

KUALA TERENGGANU: Umno is a principled party that always strives to solve the people's problems, said Terengganu Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat. He said Umno is also a trustworthy party and not one that "jumps" (switches allegiance). Based on this stance, he said, Umno continues to actively prepare for the Sabah state election, which is expected to take place in the near future. He said the state election is not just an election but also a platform to determine the direction and future of Sabah. "All party leaders in Sabah need to play a role in refuting claims that Umno is only a Peninsular (Malaysia) party," he said at the official opening of the Semporna Umno Division Meeting in Sabah yesterday. Terengganu Umno has been appointed as the "foster parent" to the Semporna and Lahad Datu Umno divisions for this Sabah state election. Rozi said Terengganu Umno would assist the party's operations in Semporna and Lahad Datu for this state election. "We do not come empty-handed. We come with full spirit and determination to help the election machinery in Semporna and Lahad Datu," he said.

Umno's future in unity govt hinges on power consensus, says Puad

Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said Umno's strategic move to join the unity government had given the party time to rejuvenate itself. PETALING JAYA : Umno's future role with the unity government is likely to hinge on negotiations to achieve a consensus on policy decisions and on the powers of the prime minister, says Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi. In a posting in response to an analyst's claim that Umno would need 10 years to rise again, he said Umno's rise meant a return to political dominance and holding the prime minister's post. Puad said he had predicted it would take Umno 20 years to achieve that aim from the time Barisan Nasional (BN) lost power in 2018. 'Seven years have passed, leaving 12 years, two more than the 10 suggested by analyst Awang Azman Pawi,' he said. He said Umno had wisely made a strategic decision to be part of the unity government, formed in 2022. 'Being in the unity government has given Umno room to breathe and rise again,' he added. In the remaining time of the 12-year timeframe, Umno must legitimise its participation in the unity government, as many grassroots members remained wary of the alliance with former political rivals, he said. 'Umno must dominate the national narrative and strengthen its wings. Umno's ministers must be seen to perform,' he said. Looking ahead, he said a decision on whether to continue with the unity government would depend on expanded political cooperation in achieving policy consensus and negotiations on the powers of the prime minister. He did not elaborate. However, Umno leaders have in the past sought a greater say in the decisions of the unity government. Yesterday, FMT reported Awang Azman as saying that the Umno-led BN would need 10 more years to recover its grassroots support before the coalition is capable of going solo in general elections. 'In the long term, Umno will want to be the main player in alliances instead of just supplementing other parties,' he said, adding that dominance was almost a part of Umno's identity. Puad said in response that Umno would contest the general election under the BN logo but continue to cooperate with Pakatan Harapan to ensure no overlap of seats.
