Arsenal 2-3 Villarreal: Nicolas Pepe scores on Emirates return as Gunners lose again in pre-season

Yahoo4 days ago
Arsenal tasted defeat for the second match running on Wednesday evening as they were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal at the Emirates.
The visitors came into the affair winless in four pre-season outings, but fought hard for their first victory of the summer, defending valiantly under heavy pressure for much of the match.
The Gunners had hoped for a confidence-lifting outing as they made their grand return to the Emirates after spending two weeks touring Asia, but were frustrated as they fell to an unlikely two-goal deficit after half an hour by way of goals from Nicolas Pepe and Edouard Eyong.
Christian Norgaard headed home for his first Arsenal goal before half-time, but Arnaut Danjuma's second-half strike put the result well out of the hosts' reach, with Martin Odegaard's 76th-minute penalty a mere consolation.
Viktor Gyokeres showed some signs of promise as he made his first start, but will need more time to bed in with his new team-mates ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Noni Madueke also got his first taste of Arsenal action with a brief second-half cameo, injecting some fresh energy into the side but ultimately falling short in the push for a late equaliser.
Arsenal started the match positively, going close through Bukayo Saka in the early stages, but could not convert their pressure into clear-cut chances as they gave goalkeeper Luiz Júnior little to worry about.
Their wasteful possession was soon punished. Former Arsenal man Nicolas Pepe, who left the Emirates under a cloud in 2023 after failing to live up to the weight of his £72million price tag, hit a poacher's goal to open the scoring against the run of play. William Saliba failed to deal with a low cross, which bobbled across the area for the Frenchman to fire home from close range.
Despite trailing, Arsenal were unperturbed and continued to press on in search of an opener, keeping their guests very much under the cosh.
But history repeated itself. Raya was unlucky as his save from Gerard Moreno's shot was deflected perfectly into Eyong's path, and he finished to double Villarreal's lead.
Christian Norgaard headed home from a Gabriel Martinelli corner moments later to perpetuate Arsenal's reliance on set-pieces and halve the deficit, but the Gunners trailed at the break.
The direction of play was not much changed in the second half, as Arsenal continued to attack in droves. Gyokeres forced another good save from Junior before being withdrawn, ending his full Arsenal debut goalless.
It took just one second-half chance for Villarreal to extend their lead. A lightning counter-attack from the Yellow Submarine set Danjuma free into a one-on-one against Kepa Arrizabalaga, who could not keep out the former Tottenham man's cross-goal finish.
Odegaard's late penalty, won by Dowman, inspired a desperate pursuit of an equaliser as the match dwindled, but despite the Gunners' full-scale assault on Villarreal, the Spaniards held firm.
The evening went from bad to worse for Arsenal after the match in a novelty penalty shootout, during which Madueke and Gabriel both saw efforts saved as the Gunners were beaten again.

Fulham opening bid for Kevin rejected by Shakhtar Donetsk

Fulham have seen their opening bid for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Kevin rejected. Marco Silva is desperate to bolster his attack this summer, with Kevin identified as a 22-year-old scored nine goals and provided four assists in all competitions last season, and predominantly plays off the left flank. Shakhtar sources say Fulham's opening offer was worth €30million (£26m) and, as expected, was turned down. The Ukrainian giants are understood to be holding out for closer to their €50m (£43m) valuation for the Brazilian. Fulham have also shown an interest in Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, who spent last season on loan with them. Nelson is looking for a new club for the upcoming season and Arsenal are open to offers for him. The winger's preference is thought to be staying in London and he would be happy to return to Fulham. Fulham have been quiet in the transfer window so far, but their business is expected to ramp up over the coming weeks. Marco Silva's side achieved a club-record number of Premier League points last season and they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Silva is keen to kick on this season and achieve a top-half finish, with players in the squad eager to qualify for European football.

Kevin: Fulham submit club-record bid for Brazilian star after Marco Silva demand

Fulham have submitted a club-record bid for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Kevin. Standard Sport understands the bid eclipses the £34million fee, including add-ons, that Fulham paid for Emile Smith Rowe last summer. The offer is expected to be rejected, with Shakhtar holding out for closer to their €50m (£43.3m) are in the market for a winger and have identified Kevin, who scored nine goals and provided four assists in all competitions last season, as an option on the left-hand side of Marco Silva's attack. The club had been progressing in negotiations with Arsenal for winger Reiss Nelson, who spent last season on loan at Fulham, but have now turned their attention to Kevin. The 22-year-old, who joined Shakhtar from Palmeiras in January 2024, impressed in last season's Champions League, scoring against Bayern Munich and Brest in the league phase. Fulham have had a quiet transfer window thus far, becoming the last Premier League club to make a first-team signing by bringing in goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte from Montpellier last month, and the club's lack of activity has prompted Silva to demand at least four more signings before the end of the September 1 deadline. Silva's pleas have been heard, with Fulham prepared to break their transfer record for the second successive summer. The club's focus this summer has been on securing the futures of first-team players Tom Cairney and Kenny Tete, as well as highly rated academy players Josh King and Seth Ridgeon. However, their bid for Kevin suggests they will be more proactive in the market as the new season approaches.

Harry Maguire outlines toughest moment in candid interview

Manchester United's Harry Maguire has provided some insight into the toughest moments of his career. Renaissance The experienced centre back has had some tumultuous moments at Old Trafford and his time at United looked finished in 2023 when he seemed on the verge of a transfer to West Ham United. No deal came to pass however, and he has now fought his way back into the first team squad. Maguire's importance under Ruben Amorim has been seen in his inclusion in the six-man leadership group. What's more, it has been reported that United are keen to offer him a new contract to keep him at Old Trafford for the rest of his career. Media criticism In an interview with Rio Ferdinand for his podcast Rio Presents, Maguire spoke on the pressures of dealing with the media. He was asked to explain how he has handled such intense scrutiny and he explained, 'as much as I can, ignore it all. Social media nowadays is tough. It is nice when people speak well of you but when you play for this club you soon realise that you can be spoken well of and then three months later it can be totally different. It can flip so quickly.' Maguire then claimed that the people who really suffer are the players' families. The defender explained, 'I think it is harder for the players' families. They are the ones that see it. When I speak to people they don't generally bring up 'oh, Roy Keane said this about you or Rio said this about you'. They probably bring it up to my mum and dad or my brother. Personally, I think they are the ones that suffer a bit more than myself.' Younger players The England centre back then stated that the people who can suffer more are the younger generation. He explained that as an older player you learn how to deal with the pressure but young players can break as you don't know which way their career will go. He was then asked to provide advice for the younger players facing this media attention and he retorted, 'I've got a great team around me, I have got a great family. Really close to my friends. It's really important to have good support around you. You can only do what you can do.' Specific pressures at United Maguire then explained the unique pressures of playing for a club of United's stature and how this can be a mental drain on players. He explained, 'when you play for this football club, everything gets analysed. Every goal that goes into the back of the net is someone's fault. You do become used to it but for a young boy coming into it… I see a lot of players at Manchester United break through in one or two years and then after the second year they start getting questioned and the form dips a little bit.' His toughest moment Finally, Maguire disclosed his toughest moment was when he was playing for England away to Scotland and was jeered by the fans. He asserted, 'it got to a stage where people had realised that it had passed the mark of banter. That's the moment where it turned. I had a lot of people who reached out to me.' Maguire also claimed that a lot of the criticism of his play was made for video content and not real analysis. He elaborated, 'I had a bad six months where everything I did was online. Videos of me, every misplaced pass, it got to the stage where anything that was posted was just for clicks. I can take criticism from players and ex-players but it got to the stage where it was all for clicks and followers.'
