When talking about some of the greatest career resurgences in NFL history, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and his story might be in the conversation.

From being on the scrap heap a couple of years ago, Baker landed in Tampa Bay and has never looked back. Division titles, a playoff win, and multiple Pro Bowls in two seasons have improved Mayfield's stature in the league.
And now he might have gotten the best endorsement yet.
Hall of Famer and Buccaneers legend Ronde Barber, when speaking on The Ronde Barber Show, gave Baker his flowers for what he's done in Tampa since arriving.
"The leadership qualities just jump out at you," Barber said. "The dude makes tough plays in tough situations. He elevates the entire team. Baker's a top 10 quarterback for me, man. I don't see how anybody can say otherwise.'

'He's had a new coordinator every single year of his career, including this year. And I don't know that it matters. The guy just elevates his game to whatever level he needs it to be at.'

It's hard to argue with any of that based on the last two seasons, with Mayfield elevating himself into the upper echelon of quarterbacks in football.
Last season, a career-best season yielded 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns while having a completion percentage of 71.4. Yes, the 16 interceptions are a blight, but other than that, Baker has been rolling.
Now, looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Buccaneers are considered NFC dark horses, with some thinking that, given the talent at Baker's disposal, a Super Bowl run isn't out of the realm of possibility for this team.

Yes, that is some high praise, but this Buccaneers team, led by Mayfield, deserves to be mentioned as one of the better teams in football.

Steelers Add Another Star Vet, Reportedly Trade for Dolphins' Jalen Ramsey

After multiple months of trade speculation, Jalen Ramsey finally has a new home. The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired the star cornerback from the Miami Dolphins in a trade, Ramsey announced in a social media post on Monday. As part of the deal, the Steelers have agreed to adjust Ramsey's contract for the 2025 NFL season. Ramsey will get a $1.5 million raise, bringing his salary to $26.6 million for the upcoming season, NFL Media reported. Ramsey, 30, has been one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL since the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He's earned seven Pro Bowl nods and three first-team All-Pro honors through the first nine years of his career, helping the Los Angeles Rams win Super Bowl LVI in 2021. This is a developing story and will be updated. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Dolphins trade Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving them shaky at cornerback

The Dolphins traded disgruntled former All Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, parting ways with one of their most accomplished players, just nine months after giving him a lucrative contract extension. The parties involved were not saying what Miami would receive in return. As part of the trade, Ramsey will get a $1.5 million raise this season, increasing his salary to $26.6 million. He announced the trade on social media. The seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback never publicly explained why he wanted out of Miami but gave a strong hint when he posted a photo of rotten oranges on the first night of the NFL Draft, alongside a caption that read as an indictment of the Dolphins organization. 'Who you surround yourself with matters,' the first part of the caption read, followed by a short inscription underneath the picture that said 'If you surround yourself with people who are okay with mediocre, you too will start to be okay with it... surround yourself with people who desire GREATNESS!' In previous media sessions this spring, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier has characterized Ramsey's departure as a mutual decision. Grier said on April 15 that 'we've decided that it was probably in the best interest for all parties to move forward. 'I will say, these decisions aren't done quickly and they're not taken lightly because we spent a lot of time this offseason working through this, talking through things,' Grier added. 'At the end of the day, Jalen did not ask for a trade. So we went through the process and just felt that after numerous conversations and then talking last week with Jalen and his agent that it was best to move forward and it was the best interest of the Miami Dolphins and for Jalen Ramsey.' If Ramsey hadn't been traded, his Dolphins cap hit this season would have been $16.7 million. Instead, his 2025 dead money cap hit on the Dolphins' books will be $6.7 million, leaving Miami with $24 million in cap space. That money can be carried over to next offseason if the Dolphins don't use it all this season. Ramsey will have another $18 million in dead money on Miami's 2026 books. Had Ramsey been traded before June 1, his 2025 dead money Dolphins cap hit would have been $25 million. The Dolphins are expected to use some of that additional cap space to sign at least one veteran cornerback. Aside from nickel cornerback Kader Kohou, the Dolphins don't have a proven starting cornerback on their team. Their other corners under contract: former second-round pick Cam Smith (a disappointment so far), Storm Duck (who made the team as an undrafted rookie last season), Kendall Sheffield (who signed recently after a weekend tryout but hasn't started a game since 2020), rookie fifth-rounder Jason Marshall Jr., undrafted rookies BJ Adams (from UCF) and Ethan Robinson (Minnesota), Ryan Cooper Jr. (a former Ohio State standout), Artie Burns (a former Miami Hurricanes standout who played 51 defensive snaps for Seattle last year), second-year player Isaiah Johnson and Ethan Bonner, who played just 16 defensive snaps last season and 27 over two years. The Dolphins have maintained contract with veteran free agent cornerback Rasul Douglas, who rejected a Miami offer earlier in May. Douglas started 15 games for the Bills this season. They've also inquired about former Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas standout and ex-Chargers free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., a free agent who's recovering from neck surgery. He expects to be able to play this season. They told another free agent cornerback that they wanted clarity on Ramsey before moving forward. Other established cornerbacks still unsigned include James Bradberry, Stephon Gilmore, Mike Hilton and C.J Henderson. Ramsey, 30, has played for the Jaguars (who selected him fifth overall out of FSU in 2016), Rams and Dolphins during a nine-year career. But he became disgruntled in Jacksonville and was traded to the Rams in October 2019. In March of 2023, the Rams shipped him to Miami for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long. Ramsey sustained a torn meniscus during his first Dolphins training camp and made his Dolphins debut on Oct. 28 of that 2024 season. Last year, he was ranked 25th by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 player list. Last September, the Dolphins signed Ramsey to a three–year, $72.3 million contract extension that included $24.3 million guaranteed upon signing, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. He has a $24.3 million guaranteed salary this season, and it wasn't immediately known how much of that, if any, would be paid by the Dolphins and how much will be paid by his new team. Ramsey -- who was a first-team All Pro in 2017, 2020 and 2021 -- finished his Dolphins career with 82 tackles, five interceptions and a sack in 27 games, all starts. He made the Pro Bowl in his first of two seasons in Miami.

NHL free agency is about to begin. The Panthers still have a few spots to figure out

When Matthew Tkachuk requested to be traded to the Florida Panthers three years ago, the decision came down in large part to three major points. 'No. 1, where can I win? Here,' Tkachuk said. 'No. 2, where can I make the most money? That was also here. No. 3 was like, outside of the rink, where was the best place to be? That's pretty obvious. Down here is No. 1 in the league. That was my list, and I have a feeling that's probably pretty much common for a lot of players.' It's a decision a few of his teammates still have to make with the market opening for free agency at noon Tuesday. The Panthers on Friday re-signed Sam Bennett, who centers Tkachuk's line, to an eight-year deal with an annual cap hit of $8 million. Their other two major pending free agents in defenseman Aaron Ekblad and forward Brad Marchand remain unsigned as of Monday morning. A few other key contributors to Florida's second consecutive Stanley Cup — namely defenseman Nate Schmidt, centers Tomas Nosek and Nico Sturm, and backup goaltender Vitek Vanecek — are also unsigned and will all but assuredly be testing the open market. That's because the Panthers only have so much money to work with and decisions have to be made. After Bennett's extension, Florida has just $11 million in cap space remaining before they give deals to two restricted free agents in new backup goaltender Daniil Tarasov and forward Mackie Samoskevich, which will likely be about $1 million apiece for next season. That would give Florida about $9 million to play with. It's almost assuredly not enough to make things work with both Marchand and Ekblad on the books unless the Panthers clear salary elsewhere. Ekblad's annual cap hit on his previous deal was $7.5 million, while Marchand's was $6.125 million (although Florida paid only a fraction of that after acquiring him at the trade deadline from the Boston Bruins in March). How Florida proceeds with the two will dictate how the rest of their free agency will unfold. Florida's main needs at this point are a fourth-line center and a defenseman if Ekblad doesn't re-sign. Tkachuk obviously would love for the full core to stay together. President of hockey operations and general manager Bill Zito has done a stellar job doing that to this point, with eight players — Tkachuk, Bennett and fellow forwards Aleksander Barkov, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe and Anton Lundell plus defensemen Gustav Forsling and Seth Jones — all signed through at least the 2029-30 season. But individual business decisions need to be made as well. He understands that. 'The guys that are up for deals, if they have questions, you answer,' Tkachuk said, 'but at the end of the day, I just tell them 'Make as much money as you can' because that's what you want for your players. You want to win. We've done that. We want to keep doing that with the guys that are here, but you cannot fault guys for making as much money as they can. I'm proud of all those guys for how they played. It's hard for some guys to play in a contract year when there's some uncertainty, and you would have never been able to tell with those guys. They were absolutely incredible. Hopefully they can stay, but again, who knows?' Until the deals are signed or not signed, Zito and the players are the only ones who truly know at this point. Zito has worked wonders to get the roster stability to this point, but there are always casualties at the end of each season following a big playoff run. After the 2023 Stanley Cup Final appearance, forward Anthony Duclair, defenseman Radko Gudas and backup goaltender Alex Lyon were the big departures. After winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in 2024, they saw defensemen Brandon Montour and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, forwards Kevin Stenlund and Vladimir Tarasenko, and backup goaltender Anthony Stolarz leave for more money than Florida was able to offer. Other contributors in fourth-line forwards Nick Cousins and Ryan Lomberg also left for other opportunities. There will be more of the same this offseason. The extent of it will be seen in full effect this week. 'Everything is so intertwined,' Zito said. 'When you spend to the cap and you do it for as many years as we have and commit to as many guys as we have, the wiggle room on little things is really, really difficult. Sometimes you just have to keep at it so that you can fit everybody and keep the team and the core of the team together.' But regardless of who is on the roster, Zito remains confident that the culture and work ethic built inside the Panthers' dressing room will remain as they continue their winning ways. 'I think there is a respect for the game that our group has in tandem with respect for each other,' Zito said. 'They are able to pull the fun out of whatever it is, and we're really lucky, really blessed to have good people who care about each other, who love hockey and who want to win. It's pretty simple.'
