Pioli tells Fiorentina to get inspiration from Ronaldo and sends message to Allegri
Pioli has returned to the Stadio Franchi for his second stint as a coach and was unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday.
Pioli explains why he returned to Fiorentina
'The experiences I've had so far have brought me to the highest point of my career,' Pioli said via TMW.
'I know there are many expectations here, but I already have a great feeling because I've found a lot of human depth in addition to one of the most beautiful training centres I've ever seen. I feel ready to do an outstanding job.'
Pioli was the Fiorentina coach when Davide Astori tragically died in his sleep on March 4, 2018, aged 31, before an away Serie A match against Udinese.
Fiorentina still remember their former captain before each home match by announcing their ex-No.13 in their starting XI.
'Obviously, he had a significant impact on my professional and personal life,' said Pioli.
'I still feel him, and that will never change. If we manage to take the same step forward as a team, we can even win the Scudetto.'
Pioli had reached an agreement with Fiorentina at the beginning of June, but it took him over a month to terminate his contract with Al-Hilal, where he had coached Cristiano Ronaldo.
'I've always wanted to come back. One phone call was enough. It was a month of anxiety, but still very positive,' Pioli said.
Pioli: coaching Cristiano Ronaldo 'an honour
'It was an honour to coach him [Cristiano Ronaldo]. He's much more than a champion,' he continued.
'You have no idea what lies behind his figure. I shared his management with him. He's an incredible professional, and he's obsessed with playing and scoring goals. He lives each day to be ready for the next game. That's the kind of determination we need to have.'
Pioli will coach Moise Kean in the 2025-26 season. The Italian striker was the second-best Serie A goal scorer in 2024-25, and his €52m release clause expired yesterday, July 15, 2025.
'I've spoken with Moise during this period, but I don't know whether I had an impact on his decision to stay. He's very grateful to Florence. I've seen him calm and eager to work these days. He's a very strong player,' he said.
Edin Dzeko has moved to the Franchi, while Albert Gudmundsson has made his loan move permanent. Can Fiorentina use all three of their stars simultaneously?
'We won't always be the same, but the idea is to get them playing all together,' Pioli replied.
'Much will depend on their ability to work together. I'll repeat it, the more quality players we have, the more chances we have to win.
'We should not focus on just one role or position. Gudmundsson a player with quality, great intelligence and desire to make an impact. He offers many solutions in attack, and I count on him. Fazzini has similar traits. What matters is having players with quality, pace and unpredictability. Unpredictability is the key to beating opponents.'
Pioli confirmed that Luca Ranieri would be Fiorentina's captain next season and seemed confident that the Tuscans would compete for a spot in the top four next season.
'It won't be Pioli against Allegri or Conte. It will be Fiorentina against Napoli, Milan and others,' he said.
'We have fire inside. I could have stayed where I was and been one of the ten highest-paid coaches in the world. If Fiorentina wants to be top, we need to prove it. Allegri didn't put us among the Champions League contenders. I've already written that on the board.'
Pioli has signed a long-term contract at the Stadio Franchi, which will run until June 2028.

Inter Milan Coach Cristian Chivu Hoping To Follow In Conte & Allegri's Footsteps With Serie A Title In First Season With Top Job
Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Antonio Conte and Max Allegri by winning the Serie A title in his first season in a top job. This is highlighted by Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, via FCInterNews. Cristian Chivu is still a very inexperienced coach. At least at the senior level. The Romanian has no shortage of experience as a player. And he also worked his way up the youth team ranks at Inter. However, Chivu has coached a grand total of just thirteen matches at senior level. All of these came at Parma last season. Therefore, Inter are taking a gamble that the 44-year-old will be able to seamlessly make the step up to one of the biggest jobs in Serie A. Chivu Hoping To Follow In Serie A Title-Winning Footsteps Of Conte & Allegri SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 21: Cristian Chivu, Head Coach of FC Internazionale Milano, reacts during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group E match between FC Internazionale Milano and Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field on June 21, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by) There are a couple of examples of coaches who managed to defy their doubters by going all the way in Serie A in their first big jobs in the division, though. One is Antonio Conte. Like Chivu, Conte had won plenty as a player, but done relatively little to prove himself when Juventus took a chance on him in 2011. But that did not stop Conte from winning the Serie A title in his very first season as Bianconeri coach. Conte stepped down as Juventus coach in 2014 after three consecutive Serie A title wins, and Max Allegri replaced him. And Allegri would guide the Old Lady to five more titles. Prior to his time in Turin, though, Allegri had also enjoyed a lot of success with AC Milan. In fact, the Rossoneri won the title right away after Allegri had taken over. He repaid their faith in him after a series of smaller jobs in Serie A. Now, Conte and Allegri are in charge of Napoli and AC Milan respectively. Undoubtedly two of the teams that will be among Inter's biggest rivals for the title next season. And having such experienced, proven coaches could be major assets for both Napoli and Milan. But Inter will be hoping that Chivu can prevail against the veteran coaches, and remind them of something they'd once proved themselves – that experience is not a prerequisite for winning trophies.

Report – Italy Coach Gattuso Closely Following Inter Milan Breakout Star For International Team
Italian national team coach Gennaro Gattuso is closely following the development of Inter Milan striker Francesco Pio Esposito. This according to the Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Francesco Pio Esposito is set to be part of Inter's senior squad this coming season. After two seasons on loan with Spezia, the Nerazzurri gave the 20-year-old a chance to prove himself at the Club World Cup this summer. And it was an opportunity which Pio Esposito grabbed with both hands. Therefore, he will be part of Inter's plans for Serie A, the Champions League, and the Coppa Italia. (Photo by) And according to the Gazzetta dello Sport, one particularly interested party in Pio Esposito's development this season would be Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso. The legendary former AC Milan midfielder took over as Azzurri boss this summer from Luciano Spalletti. And one area of the pitch in which there is some doubt for Italy is the attack. It has been some time since the Azzurri have been able to call upon a truly top-class centre-forward. There have been some candidates to step up recently. Among them are Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean. However, if Pio Esposito is able to maintain his trajectory playing in Serie A, he could certainly also stake his claim for the national team. The 20-year-old Inter striker has a combination of physicality, holdup play, and finishing ability that is very rare indeed. Therefore, Gattuso will be watching with a keen eye to see whether Pio Esposito earns a spot as Italy's centre-forward for years to come with his performances over the coming season. The young striker has already earned some comparisons to past Italy greats like Luca Toni and Christian Vieri. And Gattuso might be the happiest person of all if Pio Esposito can make good on them.

Emotional Kimi Antonelli Opens Up About Confidence Struggles At Belgian GP
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli looked crushed after a disappointing Belgium Grand Prix Qualifying. Antonelli finished 20th in sprint qualifying due to spinning out of control after pushing too hard on his final lap of SQ1. He finished in 17th place for the sprint race, gaining a few places, but was unable to capture any points. Then, in qualifying for the grand prix, Antonelli finished in P18, a much lower position than the car merits. During the media session after the race, Antonelli appeared emotional following another performance. "Yeah, I mean, since the European [leg of the] season, I've been struggling to find confidence with the car, and I feel like I've done a backward step," the Italian driver said. "It's a difficult moment for me because I feel like I have no confidence on pushing. Yesterday I tried to push a bit too much, and then I spun, and then it kind of hurts the confidence even more. "But it's a difficult period, I think. We know the limitation we have since quite a lot, but with the way I'm driving, I'm just increasing the problem. And that gives me even less confidence with the car." He was only about three-tenths away after Q1, making his performance not a complete disaster, but it is a far cry from the impressive pace that he has shown over the first handful of races. During the North American swing, he scored a sprint race win at Miami and his first podium finish in Canada. Since then, it has been downhill for the driver, who voiced his concerns about the changes to his driving style as the car evolved. "Well, the team has been trying to help me as much as possible," he added. "But on my side I'm probably trying to change the way I'm driving too much. And it feels like I'm not driving naturally. It's very forced the way I'm driving and it's just difficult." The Italian will start from the pit lane as the team makes adjustments to the car, depending on the weather conditions, which are expected to bring rain to the track throughout the race.
