Sabah tourism earns RM4.5mil at MATTA Fair
This result marks a 46% increase from the same period at last year's Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) fair, affirming Sabah's continued status as a preferred domestic travel destination.
Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman Julinus Jeffery Jimit (pic) said 43 Sabah travel agents participated in the fair, offering a diverse range of tourism options, including adventure, culture, nature, and community-based tourism.
He credited the success to the dedication and active participation of Sabah's tour and travel agencies, reflecting Sabahan camaraderie in promoting the state's tourism industry alongside STB.
At the event, the STB booth's 'Explore Sabah Dulu Bah' theme encouraged visitors to redeem travel rebate vouchers up to RM100 with a minimum RM600 deposit in a single receipt.
To promote community-based tourism (CBT) products, RM50 travel rebate vouchers per person were offered to CBT product buyers.
STB kept the booth engaging with a virtual reality (VR) experience and daily activities to attract visitors and increase retention, while a survey studied domestic consumer behaviour.
STB introduced two local brands from Sabah: Chanteek Borneo and Uinah, both receiving positive responses from MATTA Fair attendees.
Chanteek Borneo showcased clothing and textiles featuring traditional Sabah motifs, while Uinah introduced a refreshing drink made from sustainably sourced local ingredients.
'STB continues its strong commitment to enhancing promotional efforts for Sabah in domestic and international markets, including active participation in major travel events like the MATTA Fair,' said Julinus.
'This effort echoes the STB 'Explore Sabah' campaign leading up to Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' he added.
He also launched the new Augmented Reality Map (AR Map) for both Sabah and Kota Kinabalu City.
Users can scan a barcode on the maps to unlock more information about key attractions, offering an interactive experience with helpful guidelines and animations.
This latest promotional material is part of STB's initiatives to make exploring Sabah a more immersive, engaging, and accessible experience, said Julinus.
Physical copies of the map were distributed at the MATTA Fair and are available for download from the Sabah Tourism Board's official website.
Earlier, in August last year, STB launched a digital careline chatbot, called Avantang, providing round-the-clock access to essential travel information and assistance.
This facility is accessible from the Sabah Tourism Board website, WeChat account, or WhatsApp number +6019-9392121.

Hajiji hails trade unions as key strategic partners of Sabah govt
KOTA KINABALU: Trade unions play an important role as strategic partners in the government's policy formulation and development of a sustainable work environment, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. "Within a new and more inclusive development framework, the voice of unions must be heard and given serious attention," he said at the Sabah-level Trade Union Day event here on Monday (Aug 4). "This applies not only to issues of wages and benefits, but also in policy formulation, economic planning, education, technology adaptation, and the creation of a sustainable future work environment. "I believe Sabah has the potential to become a model state in Malaysia in developing an employment ecosystem that not only drives a strong economy but also consistently upholds workers' rights." Human Resources Minister Steven Sim also attended the event. The Chief Minister said the state government is committed to empowering the workforce, supporting the trade union movement, and ensuring their members' welfare is protected. "I hope this assembly will serve as a platform to strengthen the spirit of unionism and working together to build a brighter future for Sabah," he said. Hajiji said the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda places a key focus on several critical priorities, including strengthening strategic cooperation with the Human Resources Ministry. "This is crucial to expanding social protection and security coverage to all workers, including those in the often-overlooked informal sector. "We want to ensure that every Sabahan, whether in rural or urban areas, is given a fair opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the state's development," he added. Hajiji said the state recorded a labour force of over 1.7 million last year, and the collective contribution of this workforce has driven Sabah's gross domestic product (GDP) to increase to RM84.3bil. "This... (is) particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, as well as services. "In terms of the latest trade union data in Sabah, as of today, there are 92 registered trade unions in the state, regulated by the Sabah Trade Union Affairs Department. "This involves a total membership of 60,764 workers, with 22,317 members from the government sector, 35,194 from the private sector, and 3,253 from statutory bodies," he said.

Aid helps single mums stretch the ringgit
Value for money: Nor Laily Azura (right) and Noraini buying daily necessities using Sara aid at a supermarket. — Bernama KUALA NERUS: The Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) financial aid via MyKad not only ensures assistance reaches deserving people but also allows recipients to benefit from special promotional prices at some supermarkets. Sharing her experience, domestic helper Noraini Sidek@Ali, 49, said certain supermarkets in the district here offer lower prices to Sara recipients who pay using MyKad. 'They give special prices to help people in the B40 group like us. 'This way, I feel the aid goes to the right people,' the single mother of four told Bernama. Noraini, who earns around RM600 a month and also receives state government aid, said the RM100 monthly assistance she has been getting since April has been a big help in buying basic necessities. 'It helps me save a little each month because I don't have to worry so much about grocery expenses,' she said. Noraini's younger sister, Nor Laily Azura, is also a Sara recipient. Life has been tough for Nor Laily, whose husband died in a road accident in 2019. She has two daughters, aged six and 11. Despite getting her late husband's pension and being a recipient of state government aid, she earns just RM400 a month as a homestay helper. 'I can't take a full-time job now because I have to care for my children and my elderly father. 'Thankfully, since March, I've been receiving RM200 a month from Sara. At least I don't have to worry so much about grocery expenses,' she said. For both Noraini and Nor Laily, the Sara assistance delivered directly via MyKad not only helps ease their financial burden but also makes life easier for single mothers taking care of their children and other daily responsibilities. This targeted cash aid initiative for those most in need has now been expanded to benefit 5.4 million recipients, comprising 700,000 existing beneficiaries under eKasih and 4.7 million under the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR). Under Budget 2025, allocations for STR and Sara have been increased to RM13bil from RM10bil previously, with the annual Sara aid raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200 last year. The initiative is part of the Madani Economy framework, which focuses on empowering low-income households through fair opportunities, better living standards and comprehensive social protection. In conjunction with National Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Tuesday announced a one-off RM100 payment to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. The payment, credited directly to recipients' MyKad under Sara, will benefit 22 million Malaysians. The allocation involves an extra RM2bil, bringing the total funding for STR and Sara this year to RM15bil, the highest in the nation's history for cash assistance. The funds can be utilised from Aug 31 to Dec 31 at more than 4,500 shops and supermarkets nationwide.
