Auburn baseball remains No. 10 in latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll Auburn remains a top 10 team ahead of this weekend's regional play
In the latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll, the Auburn Tigers remained at No. 10 in the rankings despite failing to win a game in the SEC Baseball Tournament last week in Hoover, Alabama.
Auburn lost 3-2 to the Texas A&M Aggies in the second round last Thursday. However, the Tigers did receive good news. They were rewarded as the host of the regional round for the third time in four seasons. Joining the Tigers for the Auburn Regional are NC State, Stetson, and Central Connecticut State.
The new rankings saw some movement at the top. The North Carolina Tar Heels jumped to No. 1 from No. 3 the week prior. After winning the SEC Tournament Championship over Ole Miss, Vanderbilt jumped five spots from No. 9 to No. 4. Ole Miss saw a big jump going up five spots with a ranking of No. 15. LSU dropped from the No. 1 ranking to No. 3 after their semifinal exit to Ole Miss in a 2-0 loss. The remaining SEC teams in the rankings were Texas (No.2), Arkansas (No. 5), Georgia (No. 6), Tennessee (No.16), Florida (No. 18), and Alabama (No. 20).
The Tigers struggled with the bats in their 3-2 loss to Texas A&M. Auburn only had six hits and did not score a run until the fifth inning. Lucas Steele and Eric Snow did hit two home runs in the game. Auburn will enter their regional game against Central Connecticut on Friday losing three of four games. They previously had been playing well, winning five games in a row. The game against Central Connecticut will be broadcast on ESPN+ with a start time of 6 p.m. CT.

Texas at Ohio State will be first time in CFB history No. 1 has faced No. 2 in Week 1

When the US LBM Coaches Poll was released on Monday, it made future history. Texas was named the No. 1 team in the country and Ohio State was ranked No. 2. That means when the Longhorns and Buckeyes meet on Aug. 30 at the Horseshoe in Columbus, it will be the first time in college football history the two top teams in the nation face off in Week 1. This is also the first time in program history that Texas is ranked No. 1 in the Coaches Poll. What was the biggest game of Week 1 just became epic in scale. ESPN College GameDay will be on hand. So will Fox Sports' Big Noon Kickoff. And the game that everyone is looking forward to just got more historic. The game already has huge storylines. It is Arch Manning's first start as QB1. It features the defending national champion. It features college football's only back-to-back semifinalist. It is a rematch of last year's college football semifinal in the Cotton Bowl. Now it is officially historic. Since college football polls started in 1936 with the AP Poll (the Coaches Poll started in 1950), there has never been a No. 1 vs No. 2 game in Week 1. We'll see if the AP Poll agrees on Monday, Aug. 11. The ironic thing is there has only been one No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in Week 2 in college football history. That was Colt McCoy's second game back in 2006. The opponent? Ohio State, who won 24-7. Keith scores on sacrifice fly in 11th, Tigers rally to top Twins 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Colt Keith scored on Gleyber Torres' sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Detroit Tigers overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Thursday night. Riley Greene hit his team-leading 28th home run to help Detroit win for the fourth time in five games and fifth in seven. Starting at second base in the 11th inning, Keith advanced to third on a wild pitch by Erasmo Ramírez (0-1) and scored on a Torres' sacrifice fly. Rafael Montero (1-1) got the final four outs for the Tigers. Detroit starter Tarik Skubal overcame a shaky third inning to get through seven innings, allowing three runs. He had only three strikeouts. When he last faced the Twins on June 29, he struck out 13 in seven innings. Edouard Julien homered before Ryan Jeffers and Luke Keaschall had RBIs in a three-run Minnesota third, but Skubal retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced. After starter Bailey Ober got two quick outs in the fourth, Kerry Carpenter doubled and Greene's home run cut the Detroit deficit to 3-2. Key moment Minnesota's Alan Roden tried to score from third with one out in the 10th inning on a half-swing by Austin Martin, but was thrown out at the plate by charging first baseman Spencer Torkelson, a call upheld by video review. Key stat Detroit has won 11 of its past 17 games since July 27 after losing 12 of 13 and having its division lead shrink from 14 to seven games. Up next RHP Charlie Morton (7-10, 5.48 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night for Detroit against Minnesota RHP Pierson Ohl (0-2, 7.15). ___ AP MLB:

Pitching shines as Troy Melton leads Detroit Tigers to 1-0 win over Chicago White Sox

CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers needed two things on Wednesday, Aug. 13: efficiency from starting pitcher Troy Melton and run support from the strikeout-prone offense. Only one came, but it was enough for a win. The Tigers won, 1-0, in their series finale against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field, taking two of three games in the series — both by one run. The rookie Melton led the way with five scoreless innings on 56 pitches. The Tigers (70-52) have secured two series in a row for the first time since early July, an important recovery from dropping six of seven series in between. THE BEST TEAM? Tigers own MLB's best record in last 162 games. Rival stars react to their rise Melton, a 24-year-old right-hander, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He wasn't going to pitch nine innings regardless, but Luis Robert Jr. broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff double off Melton's two-strike slider. The way Melton responded stood out – he struck out the next three batters: Andrew Benintendi (swinging, 85.4 mph slider), Miguel Vargas (swinging, 97.1 mph four-seam fastball), Edgar Quero (swinging, 85 mph slider). Those were three of Melton's six strikeouts. He didn't issue a walk. After the fifth inning, the Tigers turned the game over to right-handed reliever Sawyer Gipson-Long, who returned from a 47-day stint on the injured list (neck stiffness). He fired scoreless sixth and seventh innings, setting up a path to win. [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest For the final two innings, the Tigers turned to their best relievers to win the series finale: right-hander Kyle Finnegan in the eighth and righty Will Vest in the ninth. Finnegan, 33, continued his dominance since the Tigers acquired him from the Washington Nationals at the July 31 trade deadline. This time, he worked around a leadoff walk with three outs in a row, including two groundouts. Celebrate 125 seasons of the Tigers with our new book! Since the trade, Finnegan hasn't allowed a run in 5⅓ innings. Vest, 30, recorded the final three outs – Curtis Mead (groundout), Kyle Teel (strikeout) and Lenyn Sosa (flyout) – to lower his ERA this season to 2.61 in 49 games. He has 18 saves in 23 chances. THE ROTATION: Detroit Tigers' Chris Paddack explains obsession with throwing first-pitch strikes The only run The Tigers were shut down by right-hander Shane Smith, who completed five scoreless innings on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in his 92-pitch performance. But the Tigers scored after Smith's departure. In the sixth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases against left-handed reliever Martín Pérez in his return from a lengthy stay on the injured list (elbow). To load the bases, Kerry Carpenter slapped a single, Spencer Torkelson ripped a double to center and Riley Greene drew a rare walk. The Tigers were limited to one run in their bases-loaded, no-out situation, scoring on Wenceel Pérez's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. After that, Javier Báez struck out and Jahmai Jones grounded into a force out — stranding runners on the corners. But that one run was enough to win.
