Mohammed Ali Bemammer set standard for NorthEast United FC's new era
The Moroccan midfielder was more than just a name in the Highlanders' roster. He embodied the values that the new-look NorthEast United FC team under Juan Pedro Benali represented - excellence, hard work and fighting spirit. Bemammer had everything in abundant supply and was a source of inspiration for the team, as per the ISL official statement.
While life goes on at football clubs when a player departs, Bemammer's departure is certain to leave a void in the NorthEast United FC's dressing room simply because he was so good at so many things that were central to Benali's football.
A shield in front of the defence, Bemammer was as good as anybody in protecting the back four. While his defensive action numbers were impressive as he topped the Highlanders' tackling charts in 2023-24 with 33 successful tackles, his reading of the game and positional sense were exceptional, allowing him to be at the right place at the right time to halt the opponent's charge. This ability provided great balance to the team, allowing the more creative players up front more freedom to express themselves.
The Moroccan's involvement wasn't just limited to shielding the back line. He was the key link between attack and defence. Bemammer topped NorthEast United FC's passing charts in both seasons he featured for the club, meaning he was central to progressing the ball upfield. And he wasn't a mere enabler; he was also the orchestrator at times.
Bemammer created 23 chances in the 2024-25 season, the fifth most in the Highlanders' set up, as per the ISL official website.
He also added goals to his game in his second season, scoring thrice in the ISL, which included some real screamers, making him a complete midfielder.
NorthEast United FC may replace his skillsets with the ball with one or even two players if needed, but it will be hard for the Highlanders to find a substitute for the character he was.
A real physical and motivational presence in the heart of the team, Bemammer guided those around him and ensured they got their best out of them. He was key in making sure Benali's plans were translated into performances on the pitch.
He wasn't always shouting at his player, but letting his game do the talking. Bemammer led by example, putting every ounce of precision in every pass, putting his heart into every tackle and using every fibre in his brain to make his clever runs, setting a benchmark for the rest to follow.
From joining a bottom-placed team that scored 20 goals and conceded 55 in return the Highlanders turned into a team that scored 46 and conceded just 29 in reply in 2024-25 in the league stage. Bemammer was the heartbeat of this transformation, the press release added.
Even as he leaves, leaving NorthEast United FC with big boots to fill, he leaves behind a blueprint, a manual of what it takes to be a NorthEast United FC player in this new era of reformation. And those who are still there and those who will join in the future can find a reference in Bemammer's work in the ISL when they try to uphold the standards of this improving NorthEast United FC side.

Hakimi rape case: Prosecutors call for PSG and Morocco star to face trial
French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. 'It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,' the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to its first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to its historic progress to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. The woman went to a police station following the encounter alleging rape and was questioned by police. Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player. She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram. On the night in question she said she had travelled to his house in a taxi paid for by Hakimi. She told police Hakimi had started kissing her and making non-consensual sexual advances, before raping her, a police source told AFP at the time. She said she managed to break free to text a friend who came to pick her up. 'Attempted extortion' Contacted by AFP after Friday's development, Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin described the call by prosecutors for a trial as 'incomprehensible and senseless in light of the case's elements'. 'We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. 'If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal,' she continued. According to Colin, her client had 'been the target of an attempted extortion'. 'Nothing in this case suggests an attempted extortion,' Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, said. 'My client welcomes this news with immense relief,' she told AFP. 'We will not tolerate any smear or destabilisation campaign, as is unfortunately still too often the case for women who have the courage to report the rape of which they are victims,' she added. The son of a cleaning lady and a street vendor, both Moroccans who have lived in Spain since the 1980s, Hakimi was born in Getafe, a southern suburb of Madrid. Hakimi came through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He went on to make 73 appearances for the German club. He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then on to PSG in 2021 where he has established himself as an integral part of the team. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.

From being the first Indian coach to take an ISL side to the playoffs to being the first home manager to acquire a full-time job in the top division, Jamil has always been an anomaly. Disciplined team, non-nonsense defending, and well-drilled tactics have been Jamil's strengths across all teams, allowing him to extract the best from limited resources everywhere he has been. NEUFC eye winning start to their Durand campaign
The last edition earned them their first silverware. And the 134th edition of Durand Cup will see them take their first step towards title defence when NorthEast United FC face off against Malaysian Armed Forces FT to kick off their season at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday. While the Malaysian Armed Forces will be their first opponents, NEUFC will also be facing their other Group E rivals in two Shillong clubs in Shillong Lajong FC and Rangdajied United FC in their next matches. After an unbeaten run in the previous edition, Juan Pedro Benali's men will be eager to replicate that feat, starting with a win against the visitors, who were thrashed 6-0 by Shillong Lajong in their opener. "The team has been working diligently over the past three weeks, and we hope we're well-prepared and focused for our opening match against the Malaysian Armed Forces," Benali said at the pre-match press conference in Shillong on Friday. "It's the first final we have to play if we want to defend our title." Alaaeddine Ajaraie, last season's ISL Golden Boot and Golden Ball winner, will once again be crucial to NEUFC's fortunes, along with last season's Durand Cup Player of the Tournament, Jithin MS.
