Mohammed Ali Bemammer set standard for NorthEast United FC's new era

India Gazette11-07-2025
New Delhi [India], July 11 (ANI): NorthEast United FC have seen players come and go. The club has rarely enjoyed a lot of stability when it comes to the coaching staff or the squad. So, seeing a player depart should be par for course. In the case of Mohammed Ali Bemammer, it isn't.
The Moroccan midfielder was more than just a name in the Highlanders' roster. He embodied the values that the new-look NorthEast United FC team under Juan Pedro Benali represented - excellence, hard work and fighting spirit. Bemammer had everything in abundant supply and was a source of inspiration for the team, as per the ISL official statement.
While life goes on at football clubs when a player departs, Bemammer's departure is certain to leave a void in the NorthEast United FC's dressing room simply because he was so good at so many things that were central to Benali's football.
A shield in front of the defence, Bemammer was as good as anybody in protecting the back four. While his defensive action numbers were impressive as he topped the Highlanders' tackling charts in 2023-24 with 33 successful tackles, his reading of the game and positional sense were exceptional, allowing him to be at the right place at the right time to halt the opponent's charge. This ability provided great balance to the team, allowing the more creative players up front more freedom to express themselves.
The Moroccan's involvement wasn't just limited to shielding the back line. He was the key link between attack and defence. Bemammer topped NorthEast United FC's passing charts in both seasons he featured for the club, meaning he was central to progressing the ball upfield. And he wasn't a mere enabler; he was also the orchestrator at times.
Bemammer created 23 chances in the 2024-25 season, the fifth most in the Highlanders' set up, as per the ISL official website.
He also added goals to his game in his second season, scoring thrice in the ISL, which included some real screamers, making him a complete midfielder.
NorthEast United FC may replace his skillsets with the ball with one or even two players if needed, but it will be hard for the Highlanders to find a substitute for the character he was.
A real physical and motivational presence in the heart of the team, Bemammer guided those around him and ensured they got their best out of them. He was key in making sure Benali's plans were translated into performances on the pitch.
He wasn't always shouting at his player, but letting his game do the talking. Bemammer led by example, putting every ounce of precision in every pass, putting his heart into every tackle and using every fibre in his brain to make his clever runs, setting a benchmark for the rest to follow.
From joining a bottom-placed team that scored 20 goals and conceded 55 in return the Highlanders turned into a team that scored 46 and conceded just 29 in reply in 2024-25 in the league stage. Bemammer was the heartbeat of this transformation, the press release added.
Even as he leaves, leaving NorthEast United FC with big boots to fill, he leaves behind a blueprint, a manual of what it takes to be a NorthEast United FC player in this new era of reformation. And those who are still there and those who will join in the future can find a reference in Bemammer's work in the ISL when they try to uphold the standards of this improving NorthEast United FC side.
When the situation is bleak, you need to make your own role models, and with Bemammer, NorthEast United FC did just that. (ANI)

Hakimi rape case: Prosecutors call for PSG and Morocco star to face trial

French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. 'It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,' the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to its first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to its historic progress to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. The woman went to a police station following the encounter alleging rape and was questioned by police. Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player. She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram. On the night in question she said she had travelled to his house in a taxi paid for by Hakimi. She told police Hakimi had started kissing her and making non-consensual sexual advances, before raping her, a police source told AFP at the time. She said she managed to break free to text a friend who came to pick her up. 'Attempted extortion' Contacted by AFP after Friday's development, Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin described the call by prosecutors for a trial as 'incomprehensible and senseless in light of the case's elements'. 'We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. 'If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal,' she continued. According to Colin, her client had 'been the target of an attempted extortion'. 'Nothing in this case suggests an attempted extortion,' Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, said. 'My client welcomes this news with immense relief,' she told AFP. 'We will not tolerate any smear or destabilisation campaign, as is unfortunately still too often the case for women who have the courage to report the rape of which they are victims,' she added. The son of a cleaning lady and a street vendor, both Moroccans who have lived in Spain since the 1980s, Hakimi was born in Getafe, a southern suburb of Madrid. Hakimi came through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He went on to make 73 appearances for the German club. He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then on to PSG in 2021 where he has established himself as an integral part of the team. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.

Khalid Jamil's appointment by AIFF reeks of helplessness, but history-making coach has proven to be anomaly

Khalid Jamil's appointment as head coach of the Indian football team by the AIFF reeks of desperation from a cash-strapped organisation that has previously failed with similar experiments. But Jamil's extraordinary capabilities could yet prove the AIFF right. read more Khalid Jamil becomes the first Indian head coach of the men's football team since 2012. Image: ISL The All India Football Federation (AIFF) news story announcing the return of an Indian as the runs six paragraphs, including the names of the president, vice-president, Executive Committee (EC) and Technical Committee (TC) members, but there's no information of the contract tenure offered to Khalid Jamil. Possibly, the terms are yet to be agreed upon. However, the AIFF clearly mentions that Jamil has been appointed by the TC, not just picked, which suggests that a basic agreement is already in place, and the Jamshedpur FC coach has given the green light to take up the challenging job. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD So, either the contract length has not been decided, or AIFF is probably looking to play a short-term game before offering a new deal to Jamil next year. How can we say that? More from Football The budget for the 2025-26 season was passed by the AIFF Executive Committee only until December 2025 on 2 July. There are limitations, and a long-term contract most likely cannot be offered right now. It makes sense now, right? Why was Khalid picked over Constantine? But what about his appointment in the first place? How did the 48-year-old AFC Pro Licensee beat former India coach , the Anglo-Cypriot, who took India to the 2019 Asian Cup and helped them beat Thailand in a group stage match – the Blue Tigers' first win at the continental tournament since 1964. Or, what about Stefan Tarkovic, the former Slovakian and Kyrgyzstan coach? Khalid, in comparison, is a pale shadow of the competitors he had. But here's where the story gets more interesting. The AIFF is not only struggling with the budget for the ongoing season but also has no agreement in place for Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) to run the Indian Super League (ISL); its annual revenue is on a rapid decline. It generated Rs 137 crore in income in 2022-23, followed by just Rs 110 crore in 2023-24, and was also required to pay approximately Rs 3.36 crore (around $400,000) to former India head coach Igor Stimac after terminating his contract two years before its scheduled end date. The AIFF Executive Committee, in the presence of the Technical Committee, has approved the appointment of Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the Senior India Men's National Team.#IndianFootball ⚽️ — Indian Football Team (@IndianFootball) August 1, 2025 The financial crisis forced AIFF to make a compromise with Manolo as he came on a deal where he continued his job at FC Goa in ISL. And we know how his tenure ended. . Manolo, the manager who was said to know everything about Indian football, a fan favourite, arguably popular among players, and a tactician believed to have the ability to get the best out of Indian players, won just one friendly out of eight games in charge of the Indian football team. His only win came against a semi-professional-looking Maldivian side. Also Read | The football India played under him was abysmal – the players looked shaky, the squad selection was questionable, the team environment was unruly, and the atmosphere during India's matches was unprofessional. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Yet, the AIFF has once again opted for a manager who has no international experience, but one who comes with a lot of guts and gumption. Khalid, as a coach, has always been a fighter, punching above his weight . But didn't India need a proven face when they were on the brink of elimination from the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers? Wasn't Constantine, who already had two terms with India, a better option? Congratulations #KhalidJamil As expected Khalid Jamil is the new Head Coach Indian National Men's Team #BlueTigers A bold decision by AIFF and Khalid himself to join hands at a time when the challenge is of highest level. Khalid becomes the first Indian coach after Savio… — Shaji Prabhakaran (@Shaji4Football) August 1, 2025 After all, Jamil has zero international experience. But that's not the case with Constantine. And then there was Tarkovic, who also had extensive international experience. Don't forget, managing the dressing room is probably the biggest challenge in the Indian team. Players come into the Indian locker room with their bags full of financial security – there's no greed for money. The only thing you need to kindle in them is the passion to play for the blue jersey, but coaches have often found that tough. Stimac was undone by the same issue at the end of his tenure. Marquez never got hold of anything before he desperately sought a way out. Jamil is an anomaly and maybe that worked for him It's important to point out that the language used by the AIFF announcing Jamil's appointment tells a story in itself. 'Mr. Colaco and Mr. Ali expressed their views that the AIFF should prioritise selecting an Indian coach for the senior men's national team,' the AIFF said. 'The AIFF Vice President Shri Haris, along with members such…opined that for the betterment of Indian football, the federation must give an opportunity to an Indian coach.' So, Jamil wasn't picked just because he was the most capable, but also because he is an Indian coach. Interesting! STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Just for your information, India's last three Asian Cup qualifications, dating to 2011, have come under foreign coaches. No Indian has coached India since 2012. Only four Indians have coached the Blue Tigers since the turn of the 21st century, and none of them have lasted for more than a year. So, why this lust for an Indian coach? Possibly because we are tired of all that has happened. Even though Marquez proved beyond doubt that just some good knowledge of the ISL or Indian players is not enough to match the standards of international football, the AIFF has once again taken a punt with a similar coach. 1 - Khalid Jamil is the only Indian manager to have managed 50+ games in the #ISL (72); he is also the only Indian manager to have registered multiple playoff wins in the competition (2). Choice. 📸: @IndSuperLeague#IndianFootball — OptaJeev (@OptaJeev) August 1, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The only difference is that Jamil is not Marquez. He is no washed-up Spaniard coach; Jamil is a trailblazer in his own right. The messiah of Mumbai FC, the history-maker at Aizawl FC, and the trend-setter in the ISL with NorthEast United FC and Jamshedpur. From being the first Indian coach to take an ISL side to the playoffs to being the first home manager to acquire a full-time job in the top division, Jamil has always been an anomaly. Disciplined team, non-nonsense defending, and well-drilled tactics have been Jamil's strengths across all teams, allowing him to extract the best from limited resources everywhere he has been. Possibly, that's why AIFF picked him, but that is not clear from their news story, nor has that ever been enough to coach India. But as I said, Jamil is an anomaly. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

NEUFC eye winning start to their Durand campaign

The last edition earned them their first silverware. And the 134th edition of Durand Cup will see them take their first step towards title defence when NorthEast United FC face off against Malaysian Armed Forces FT to kick off their season at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday. While the Malaysian Armed Forces will be their first opponents, NEUFC will also be facing their other Group E rivals in two Shillong clubs in Shillong Lajong FC and Rangdajied United FC in their next matches. After an unbeaten run in the previous edition, Juan Pedro Benali's men will be eager to replicate that feat, starting with a win against the visitors, who were thrashed 6-0 by Shillong Lajong in their opener. "The team has been working diligently over the past three weeks, and we hope we're well-prepared and focused for our opening match against the Malaysian Armed Forces," Benali said at the pre-match press conference in Shillong on Friday. "It's the first final we have to play if we want to defend our title." Alaaeddine Ajaraie, last season's ISL Golden Boot and Golden Ball winner, will once again be crucial to NEUFC's fortunes, along with last season's Durand Cup Player of the Tournament, Jithin MS. The trio of new Spanish recruits — Jairo Samperio, Chema Nunez and Andy Rodriguez — will add to Benali's options in attack and midfield. Golden Glove winner last time, Gurmeet Singh, will hope to start with a cleansheet aided by a defence led by captain Michel Zabaco and the likes of Asheer Akhtar, Tondonba Singh, Buanthanglun Samte, Robin Yadav, Dinesh Singh, Redeem Tlang and Bekey Oram adding to the depth in the backline. The rest will depend on Spaniard Benali's tactical acumen as NEUFC will look to script an even better season for the Highlanders' fans.
