NEUFC eye winning start to their Durand campaign

Time of India5 days ago
The last edition earned them their first silverware. And the 134th edition of Durand Cup will see them take their first step towards title defence when
NorthEast United FC
face off against Malaysian Armed Forces FT to kick off their season at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday.
While the Malaysian Armed Forces will be their first opponents,
NEUFC
will also be facing their other Group E rivals in two Shillong clubs in Shillong Lajong FC and Rangdajied United FC in their next matches.
After an unbeaten run in the previous edition, Juan Pedro Benali's men will be eager to replicate that feat, starting with a win against the visitors, who were thrashed 6-0 by Shillong Lajong in their opener.
"The team has been working diligently over the past three weeks, and we hope we're well-prepared and focused for our opening match against the Malaysian Armed Forces," Benali said at the pre-match press conference in Shillong on Friday.
"It's the first final we have to play if we want to defend our title."
Alaaeddine Ajaraie, last season's ISL Golden Boot and Golden Ball winner, will once again be crucial to NEUFC's fortunes, along with last season's Durand Cup Player of the Tournament, Jithin MS. The trio of new Spanish recruits — Jairo Samperio, Chema Nunez and Andy Rodriguez — will add to Benali's options in attack and midfield.
Golden Glove winner last time, Gurmeet Singh, will hope to start with a cleansheet aided by a defence led by captain Michel Zabaco and the likes of Asheer Akhtar, Tondonba Singh, Buanthanglun Samte, Robin Yadav, Dinesh Singh, Redeem Tlang and Bekey Oram adding to the depth in the backline.
The rest will depend on Spaniard Benali's tactical acumen as NEUFC will look to script an even better season for the Highlanders' fans.

Hamid's goal takes East Bengal into Durand Cup quarters

1 2 Kolkata: Moroccan newcomer Hamid Ahadad scored on debut as East Bengal FC subdued high-flying Namdhari FC 1-0 at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday, becoming the first team to advance to the quarterfinals of this year's Durand Cup. The all-important goal came in the 68th minute when Namdhari goalkeeper Niraj Kumar missed the flight of a corner kick taken by another red-and-gold debutant Miguel Ferreira and Hamid — who replaced Greek forward Dimitrios Diamantakos seven minutes earlier — headed it home and send home fans in the stands into rapture. While Namdhari finished their Group A engagements with two wins and one loss, Oscar Bruzon's team — also on six points now — assured itself of topping the group by dint of head-to-head superiority and qualifying for the knockout stage with a game in hand. Wednesday's scoreline, however, barely reflected true narrative of the contest. Not only did East Bengal miss a chance to win by a much bigger margin, it could have also easily been a more remarkable debut for Miguel, who rejoined the Spanish coach Bruzon following their successive stint with Bangladesh's Bashundhara Kings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The Brazilian attacker was denied by the post not once, but thrice, in the first half itself. That East Bengal enjoyed almost 70% of possessions and Namdhari finished the game without having a shot on goal told a whole different story. Namdhari came into the match with back-to-back wins. But Bruzon started with four foreigners — Miguel, Saul Crespo, Diamantakos and Mohamad Rashid — in a move aimed at gaining early ascendancy. They duly started on the front foot, dominating the proceedings with consummate ease but their search for early goals failed to bear fruit. Miguel represented the team's attacking aspirations, hitting the post with his left-footed scorcher from 22 yards in the 21st minute. The Brazilian came calling again soon, but his two headers were denied by the woodwork again. Dominating with possession but without luck, Bruzon signalled Hamid to get ready and the Moroccan came, saw and changed the complexion of the game. Namdhari — who focused mainly on defending in numbers — tried to find a route back into the contest using their Brazilian striker Cledson Degol and Ghanaian defender Lamine Moro in set-pieces. But Bruzon introduced another debutant, Argentine defender Kevin Sibille, and Souvik Chakrabarti to ensure that their passage to the knockouts was not queered.

Durand Cup 2025: East Bengal Edge Past Namdhari To Move Closer To Knockouts

Last Updated: East Bengal FC beat Namdhari FC 1-0 in the Durand Cup with Hamid Ahadad's debut goal. East Bengal leads Group A with six points, dominating possession despite Namdhari's defense. East Bengal FC took a significant step towards qualifying for the knockout stages of the 134th Durand Cup with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over a determined Namdhari FC in a Group A clash at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday. Making his debut for the Red and Golds, Moroccan forward Hamid Ahadad came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 68th minute, marking a memorable first appearance. The win was East Bengal's second in as many matches, taking them to the top of Group A with six points and a healthy goal difference of +6. Head coach Oscar Bruzon rang in four changes from their opening fixture, handing starts to goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, Brazilian midfielder Miguel Figueira, Greek striker Dimitrios Diamantakos, and winger Bipin Singh. Namdhari FC, still reeling from suspensions, made two forced changes. Skipper Akashdeep Singh returned to bolster the defence, while Manish Chaudhary was included in the attack in place of the suspended Manbir Singh. From the outset, East Bengal dominated possession and pinned Namdhari deep inside their half. However, goalkeeper Niraj Kumar produced a sensational performance to keep the favourites at bay. In the ninth minute, he rushed off his line to deny Diamantakos, and minutes later cut off a dangerous low cross from Bipin Singh to thwart a clear chance. Midfielder Mohammed Rashid tested him with a fierce shot in the 17th minute, before Miguel Figueira rattled the post twice—once from distance and again with a header. In the 39th minute, Niraj denied Saul Crespo from close range before watching Miguel hit the crossbar yet again with a thunderous header. Despite wave after wave of East Bengal attacks, Namdhari's deep defensive setup—anchored by their keeper's brilliance—kept the game goalless at halftime. Substitute Ahadad Breaks the Deadlock East Bengal resumed the second half in similar fashion, searching relentlessly for the breakthrough. After another saved effort from Diamantakos and a rare Namdhari chance that Dharmpreet Singh fired wide, Bruzon made a tactical switch—bringing on Hamid Ahadad in the 61st minute. The Moroccan wasted no time making his mark. In the 68th minute, Miguel Figueira swung in a corner which Niraj misjudged, allowing Ahadad to head in unchallenged at the far post. East Bengal continued to press for a second goal, but Namdhari remained compact, avoiding further damage. With the win, East Bengal moved to six points from two matches and remain firmly in control of their knockout destiny. Namdhari, who have also registered two wins in three games, remain in contention with six points and a goal difference of +3. They can still progress as one of the two best second-placed teams.
