Is 'Hunting Wives' season 2 on Netflix happening? What we know so far

Tom's Guide4 days ago
Will the hunt continue for Margo Banks (Malin Åkerman), Sophie O'Neil (Brittany Snow) and the rest of "The Hunting Wives"?
Ever since the saucy drama series premiered on Netflix on Monday, July 21, demand for a second season has been high. "The Hunting Wives" was the most-streamed series in the U.S. last week and racked up more than 2 billion minutes viewed on the streaming service, as reported by Deadline.
Based on May Cobb's 2021 bestselling novel, this eight-part thriller follows Brittany Snow as Sophie, a Cambridge transplant whose family's fresh start in small-town Texas takes a dark turn. After falling in with the local high society crowd, Sophie's world becomes tangled in secrets, temptation and a deadly game that leaves her squarely in the crosshairs of a murder investigation involving a teenage girl.
Malin Åkerman co-stars as Margo Banks, the leader of the so-called "Hunting Wives." She is married to older husband Jed (played by Dermot Mulroney), an oil tycoon whose gubernatorial campaign means that the couple has to keep their secrets close.
There's certainly enough scandal and story to fuel a second season, but as of now, Netflix hasn't made any official announcements about "The Hunting Wives" season 2. That could be because there are behind-the-scenes logistics adding a little more complication than usual to a next-season pick-up.
Though it premiered on Netflix last month, "The Hunting Wives" was originally conceived as a Starz drama back in October 2023, with Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment producing the series. When Starz and Lionsgate split into two separate entities this May, the latter acquired the rights to "The Hunting Wives" and licenesed it to Netflix in the U.S. for a year.

It's a unique production situation, but the cast could opt for more seasons, per Deadline. And it sounds like the powers that be are as interested in more "The Hunting Wives" as fans.

In a July 2025 interview with Variety, series creator Rebecca Cutter teased plans for a potential second season. 'I think we'd do a little bit of a time jump — not a year, but a time," she said. "By the end of shooting, I realized that the two engines of the show are the whodunit and the Margo/Sophie relationship, and tracking how those spines intersect with each other."
And star Brittany Snow also recently shared how she would want to see Sophie's story played out in future episodes, telling Collider in July," I think the end is really interesting and I know that we would deal with it in season 2. There are a lot of questions that didn't get answered because Rebecca wants to answer them in the next season if we get one ...
"It's really a big blow to her that, no matter what she was doing, even when she was blacked out, she's always been trying to protect Margo in this way, and then Margo just completely turned around and lied. I think that'll be a really big question for the next season."

Beyoncé Is Now Halfway To An EGOT

Beyoncé has won her first Primetime Emmy Award, collecting one of the biggest honors in entertainment, and taking another step toward the coveted EGOT status. The superstar earns the trophy for her work as a credited costume designer on her Netflix special Beyoncé Bowl. She wins in the category of Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming. She shares the honor with Shiona Turini, Erica Rice and Molly Peters, Chelsea Staebell, and Timothy White. Beyoncé Bowl's Emmy Win The now-Emmy-winning special doubled as halftime show during the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans football game that took place on December 25, 2024. The short program featured the first live performances of tracks from her 2024 album Cowboy Carter, which went on to win the Album of the Year Grammy. Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, Reyna Roberts, Shaboozey, and Post Malone joined her on the field for the event to showcase a number of tunes from her critically-acclaimed set. Beyoncé Still Up for Two More Emmy Awards This could be just the beginning of Beyoncé's Emmy wins this year. She's still in the running for two more trophies for Beyoncé Bowl — Outstanding Variety Special (Live) and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, both of which will be handed out September 6–7 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. A Long List of Past Emmy Nominations Beyoncé has previously racked up multiple Emmy nods, this is the first time she's turned one into a win. Her 2019 concert documentary Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé earned her four nominations, Lemonade snagged her two, and she was also recognized for On the Run Tour: Beyoncé and Jay-Z and her Super Bowl Halftime Show. She even earned a Daytime Emmy nomination with her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson. Until now, every bid had come up short. Halfway to an EGOT With an Emmy secured, Beyoncé is halfway to EGOT status — the rare distinction of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. She already holds a record 35 Grammy Awards and earned an Academy Award nomination for best original song for 'Be Alive' from King Richard in 2022.

Netflix is taking its fight with Disney to a new arena

Netflix is taking its fight with Disney to hallowed ground: family-friendly sing-alongs. Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters" is briefly coming to select movie theaters as a sing-along event, in a new challenge to the Mouse House. Fans of "Kpop Demon Hunters" and its popular soundtrack can see the fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X on the big screen when the smash-hit film hits theaters in the US and Canada on August 23 and 24, Netflix said on Tuesday. The animated flick has become Netflix's fourth-most-watched movie ever since its mid-June debut. It set records by hitting a new viewership peak six weeks after its debut and narrowly missed achieving that feat again in its seventh week. "KPop Demon Hunters" owes some of its success to its chart-topping soundtrack. One of the movie's original songs, "Golden," is the No. 1 track on Billboard's Hot 100 rankings this week, and the full setlist is currently the second most popular album in the world. press release. Netflix can take on Disney without changing its tune on theaters Putting "KPop Demon Hunters" on big screens is an intriguing move for Netflix, which has often given theaters the cold shoulder. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in April that putting movies exclusively in theaters for months is "an outdated concept," Variety reported. However, Netflix has experimented with theaters, such as by giving "Knives Out 2" a limited theatrical release in 2022 and promising to give big-screen time to Greta Gerwig's forthcoming movie based on "The Chronicles of Narnia." "KPop Demon Hunters" has already moved from a hit to a cultural phenomenon, and creating a limited-edition event may further fuel interest on Netflix and for the soundtrack. Putting "Kpop Demon Hunters" in theaters, even for only two days, suggests that Netflix is set on making its biggest animated film ever a full-blown franchise. Netflix is also encroaching on what's long been Disney's territory: animated family-friendly movies with catchy songs. Disney's most recent swing in original animation, "Elio," underwhelmed at the box office despite strong reviews. Pixar's latest film grossed just shy of $150 million worldwide, and its budget was at least that much, The Hollywood Reporter said. However, "Elio" could get a second wind on Disney+. Netflix placing "KPop Demon Hunters" in theaters may not mean it's rethinking its broader movie strategy, but it does signify that it's trying to take Disney's bread and butter.

Beyoncé vs. ‘SNL50': Emmy battle for Variety Special (Live) moves to primetime — who will win?

One of the (low-key) buzziest Emmy showdowns of the year just got promoted. The race for Best Variety Special (Live) — featuring high-wattage contenders like Netflix's Beyoncé Bowl and Peacock's SNL 50: The Anniversary Special — was originally scheduled for the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys. Gold Derby has confirmed that the Television Academy has now moved it to the main Primetime Emmys telecast, airing Sept. 14 on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. More from Gold Derby Neon sets Oscar path for latest Cannes winner 'The Secret Agent': Everything to know about the thriller TIFF reveals its compelling documentary slate featuring Paula Deen, champion whistlers and balloonists According to Gold Derby's latest combined odds, SNL50: The Anniversary Special is the category front-runner, followed by Apple Music's Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show starring Kendrick Lamar, The Oscars, Beyoncé Bowl, and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert — another tribute entry from the most Emmy-winning show in history. That means Queen Bey will have to defy the odds — again — if she hopes to finally add Emmy gold to her crowded trophy case. Beyoncé is going all in — again — for Emmy gold As we previously reported, Beyoncé is pulling out all the stops — and raising eyebrows — in her campaign to win her first Emmy Award. Fresh off her historic first Grammy for Album of the Year, the Cowboy Carter superstar is now aiming for TV's top honor with Beyoncé Bowl, her NFL Christmas Day halftime show for Netflix. The 13-minute spectacle earned four Emmy nominations, including Best Variety Special (Live) and Best Directing for a Variety Special. While 32 Grammys make her the most-awarded female singer in history, the Emmy has famously eluded Beyoncé. She's lost eight previous Emmy races — nine if you count her Daytime Emmy loss for "Talks With Mama Tina" — but this year's campaign has been anything but subtle. From billboards across Los Angeles to bus stop ads, Netflix has kept the nearly nine-month-old performance top of mind for voters. But Beyoncé didn't just stick to standard FYC playbooks. In May, Emmy voters were invited to a private screening of Beyoncé Bowl at SoFi Stadium, followed by an exclusive viewing of her Cowboy Carter Tour from one of the venue's luxury suites. The event stirred controversy over perceived pay-to-play optics — tour tickets were not cheap — but the Television Academy signed off on the splashy affair. With the Variety Special (Live) category now shifting to the Primetime Emmys, is the TV Academy pulling out all the stops to entice Beyoncé to make an appearance at the ceremony? Who has the edge in Best Variety Special (Live)? This year's Variety Special (Live) category is packed with big brands and global stars — and a bit of déjà vu. Last year, The Oscars, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, won this category, beating out the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Usher, the 66th Grammy Awards, and others. The Super Bowl itself has a strong track record here, too — winning in 2022 with the Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg/Mary J. Blige/Eminem/50 Cent mega-show. But out front is Saturday Night Live, which has history and hardware on its side. SNL50: The Anniversary Special is up for 12 Emmys overall, while its companion piece, The Homecoming Concert, earning six nods. That dual presence — and the show's massive influence across generations — gives it an edge. Still, Beyoncé has never been one to back down from a challenge — or controversy. Her Beyoncé Bowl performance earned acclaim for its production, vocal delivery, and unapologetically Texan aesthetic. With her name on the ballot in both performance and directing categories, she has multiple paths to her first win. Stay tuned — the winner will be revealed live on Sept. 14.
