Congress claims SEBI's Adani probe stalled by lack of information sharing
The Congress on Monday claimed that a key figure in the Adani "scam" has Cypriot citizenship, and said the ongoing SEBI investigations into transactions involving the conglomerate have been hampered by lack of sharing of financial information by tax-haven countries and "lack of pressure" by India. The opposition party's assertions come amid the ongoing visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Cyprus.advertisement"The Prime Minister is in Cyprus on his way to Canada. Of course, he would have us believe that it is a pure coincidence that a key figure in the Modani scam has Cypriot citizenship," Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said. The Cyprus-based fund New Leaina reportedly has about USD 420 million in Adani companies, he claimed.
"The 'ultimate beneficial owners' of this fund are linked to Amicorp, which is believed to have set up at least seven Adani promoter entities, seventeen offshore shell companies linked to Mr. Vinod Adani, and three Mauritius-based offshore investors in Adani Group stock," Ramesh said in his post on X.All these transactions are part of the ongoing SEBI investigations, which have been hampered by lack of sharing of financial information by these and other tax-haven countries and lack of pressure by India, Ramesh alleged.advertisementThere was no immediate reaction from the Adani Group to the claims, but it has denied all such allegations made by the Congress and other entities. The Congress has been persistent in its attack on the government since the Adani Group stocks took a beating on the bourses in the wake of US-based short-selling firm Hindenburg Research making a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, about the conglomerate headed by industrialist Gautam Adani. The Adani Group has dismissed all the charges made by the Congress and others as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.Noting that Cyprus gained independence from British rule on August 16, 1960, Ramesh also said that in the 1950s, India spearheaded the international campaign for the full decolonisation of the island. In the context of today's geopolitics, it is worthwhile to recall that India's championing of the independence of Cyprus in the 1950s and thereafter became a sore point in our bilateral relations with Turkey," he said.Terming Cyprus a "reliable partner" for India, Prime Minister Modi on Sunday called for strengthening bilateral cooperation, which has "immense potential for growth".Modi, who arrived in Nicosia on the first leg of his three-nation tour, made the remarks while attending a business roundtable along with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.Must Watch

American Express plans 'largest investment ever' in platinum credit card
American Express Co. teased updates coming later this year to its travel-focused Platinum credit cards, announcing what it called its 'largest investment ever' in a credit-card refresh. 'We're going to take these cards to a new level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel,' Howard Grosfield, Amex's group president for US consumer services, said in a statement Monday. Amex raised its Platinum card annual fee to $695 in July 2021, when it also added $200 in annual hotel credits. Since then, the New York-based company has faced intensifying competition for premium credit-card customers, including from JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Sapphire Reserve card and Capital One Financial Corp.'s Venture X Rewards card. The Amex update will apply to both the US consumer and business Platinum cards, the company said. It didn't provide more specifics on what changes are coming. Card upgrades are critical for new-card acquisition and fees to fuel Amex's revenue growth targets, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ben Elliott wrote in a note to clients. 'Consumers' appetite for ever-higher annual fees and complex, incentive-driven rewards structures could be tested if demand slows, but the formula has driven growth consistently for decades,' Elliott said. Access to Amex's global lounges is one of the benefits linked to the Platinum card. A new Centurion lounge will be opening at Tokyo's Haneda Airport in the next year, Amex said in the statement, in addition to already-announced plans for new ones in Salt Lake City and Newark, New Jersey.

In poll-bound Bihar, PM to flag off export of locomotives to Guinea
PM Narendra Modi (File photo) NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off export of the first locomotive from Marhowrah factory in Saran for Guinea in West Africa on Friday, signalling the NDA govts' — both at Centre and state — thrust on accelerating economic activities in poll-bound Bihar. Railway ministry officials said that 150 Make in India Evolution Series (ES43ACmi) locomotives for SimFer's Simandou iron ore project in Guinea worth more than Rs 3,000 crore are being manufactured. Simandou will be Africa's largest mining project. 'In the current financial year, 37 locomotives will be exported, another 82 locomotives will be shipped out in 2026-27 and the remaining 31 locomotives in the third year,' said an official. Though the Marhowrah diesel locomotive factory (DLF) was announced by then railway minister Lalu Prasad, it remained inactive. Spread over 70 acres, the factory was established in 2018 to indigenously manufacture 1,000 state-of-the-art locomotives. The annual production capacity of the factory is over 100 locomotives. The contract to export the locomotives was awarded to Wabtec Locomotive Private Ltd, a joint venture between Indian Railways and US-based Wabtec Corporation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo All these locomotives will have AC cabs. Each locomotive will have a single cab. Two locomotives together can carry the load of 100 wagons with maximum permissible speed. 'For manufacturing of these locomotives, three types of tracks — broad gauge, standard gauge and Cape guage have been laid in Marhowrah premises,' said another railway official. Officials said with the Indian Railway network achieving full electrification, there is a huge scope for exporting diesel locos to countries where there is demand. 'It's an opportunity to increase our export of locos that match the best standard across the globe. For Bihar, it will be a big milestone,' said an official.

BJP will have to give people their due ‘bhagidari': UP Cong in charge
LUCKNOW As the government on Monday issued a notification for conducting India's 16th census, the Uttar Pradesh Congress is gearing up for the 2027 Assembly polls with an 'inclusive organisational structure' made via Rahul Gandhi's 'social justice' formula. 'As the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi took up the demand for caste census and the BJP will have to give the benefits that communities deserve. They (BJP) will have to give communities, OBCs, minorities and SC/STs their due bhagidari (share),' said Avinash Pande, in charge of UP Congress, who is extensively conducting restructuring of the party in the state. 'The next election will not be fought with the BJP, but the entire machinery where the election commission too appears a frontal organisation for the ruling party,' alleged Pande who has directed that all committees formed in state should include women, dalits, OBCs and minorities. Currently, 79 OBC castes are listed as socially and educationally backward, enjoying quota benefits in government jobs and admissions in government educational institutes. 'Irrespective of the census' consequence, we have raised the issue for benefits in proportion to the population (jiski jitni hissedari utni uski bhagidari). In fact the organisational restructuring or Sangathan Srijan that we initiated in December is on the lines of inclusive participation. I have asked for ensuring social justice at all levels of organisational structure - right from state to district, block and booth,' said Pande. The Congress leader said the party gained strength between 2022 assembly polls, when its total vote share was 2.33% with two seats won and the Lok sabha elections, when six seats came to Congress with 9.46% vote share. 'In the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had an impact on at least 10 seats. Had we gone alone, our seats would have been more,' said Pande. When asked about alliance with Samajwadi Party, he said: 'First we will see the impact of organisational restructuring in the upcoming panchayat election 2026.' 'Our marketing may be weak, but our presence is strong in at least 53 or 54 Lok Sabha seats in UP. The first phase of organisational restructuring will get over and training of selected office-bearers will begin from August 15 to set the agenda for the panchayat elections in 2026. The BJP is misleading people with a 'capitalistic approach'. The gap between the rich and the poor is such that few rich make it to the world list and remaining majority population is so poor that has to be fed with free rations, said Pande. 'Modi might be PM of 140 crore people, but Rahul Gandhi is the leader of 140 crore people,' he said.
