Melaka Christian board seeks new site as Cheng cemetery runs out of space
MCCB chairman Richard Lim said the current two-hectare cemetery in Cheng, which has been in use for decades, now holds about 2,000 graves and can no longer meet the needs of nearly 60 member churches with a combined congregation of almost 7,000 people.
'MCCB, founded 56 years ago, is licensed to provide burial services for Protestant Christians in Melaka.
"Hence, we need a new site to continue providing these services,' he said in an interview on Friday (Aug 15).
Lim said a fundraising dinner will be held on Merdeka Day, Sunday, at Lu Yeh Yen Restaurant, Kota Laksamana.
'The aim is to raise funds for the development of a new cemetery and Melaka's first Christian columbarium,' he said.
Lim said MCCB has initiated an RM1mil project to acquire the new burial land but an additional RM3mil is required to construct a three-storey, environmentally friendly columbarium that will house 5,000 urns.
'Due to a growing preference for cremation over traditional burials, there is an urgent need for a dedicated columbarium within a Christian environment,' he said.
He said the project would ensure a dignified and faith-based resting place for future generations.
'A total of 100 tables are available for sale at the dinner. Tickets are RM200 per seat or RM2,000 per table, and supporters can also sponsor tables for guests from underprivileged backgrounds, including orphanages and nursing homes,' he added.

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Marutin Ansiung Text Size: Jamawi (left) in front of the electric fire-fighting vehicle. Tenom: A mini electric fire-fighting vehicle is set to boost emergency response capacity in the Melalap State constituency once it is stationed specifically for the area. The vehicle, estimated to cost RM45,000, is a contribution from Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) Chairman, Datuk Jamawi Jaffar. Jamawi said the electric vehicle, which operates with zero carbon emissions, is not only environmentally friendly but also equipped with basic fire-fighting tools and an emergency alert system, making it suitable for use in village and rural areas. 'The mini fire engine unit is being prepared for the Melalap Volunteer Firefighting Team, which is currently awaiting approval from the top management of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). 'Future members of the volunteer team will be trained by JBPM on how to operate the vehicle and carry out rescue efforts,' he said. The mini fire engine is expected to improve response time for volunteer or community fire teams in dealing with house fires, minor forest fires, and other emergencies in areas that are hard to access by main fire stations. The initiative also highlights the importance of rural community safety, in line with green development efforts and grassroots welfare. Jamawi, who is also Melalap Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Division Chief, said the mini fire engine has been tested by JBPM Tenom and is equipped with appropriate safety features.

RM600,000 boost for Sabah e-hailing workers
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Hajiji posing with the Sabah Moto Day participants. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government will allocate nearly RM600,000 to help gig workers in the e-hailing sector open accounts with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said 11,109 applications had already been received from e-hailing drivers who wish to make contributions. 'I am pleased to announce that the State Government will provide nearly RM600,000 to assist those who have yet to open an EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's parade ground, Sunday. Hajiji expressed satisfaction at the growing success of the annual motorcycling event, which this year drew around 60,000 riders and enthusiasts from across Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. 'The strong support from participants of all ages, races and religions reflects the unifying spirit of this gathering. We should see it positively, as such events contribute to Sabah's economy given the large turnout,' he said. He also urged participants to prioritise road safety, hoping the gathering would raise awareness among two-wheel motorsport fans. Highlighting the government's investment in young people, Hajiji said the state has spent RM1.33 billion on youth development initiatives between 2021 and 2025, including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million for skills and talent development. 'This is unprecedented for the state. We are committed to nurturing youth, who are our future leaders,' he added. Hajiji ended his speech by inviting the crowd to recite al-Fatihah for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Co-organiser Datuk Mazlan Joehari Manan, who also chairs the Anti-Drug Squad, said the first day of the event began with a show of solidarity for the late Zara Qairina. He thanked the state government for its continued support towards youth initiatives and expressed hope that participants would apply the benefits gained to their peers. 'We will channel any support we receive back towards the state and the well-being of young people,' Mazlan said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
