Joe Schoen dismisses idea Giants coaches pushed Jaxson Dart pick after curious NFL draft comments

New York Post15-05-2025

Joe Schoen didn't steal cornerback Deonte Banks' signature 'My guy' catchphrase when talking about the Giants' decision to draft Jaxson Dart.
The general manager refuted the idea that Dart was a coaching-staff-driven pick Thursday during his appearance on FanDuel TV's 'Up and Adams.' But he didn't claim Dart as his favorite, either.
'It was an organizational decision,' Schoen said. 'Any player that we take, it's a collaborative process and it's very detailed, and we believe in it.'

A perception exists in NFL personnel circles that the Giants' front office preferred Shedeur Sanders — after spending more time with him than any other team spent with any prospect in 2025 — but that Daboll and the coaching staff interjected with a preference for Dart.

More fuel to the fire was added when the Giants released an in-house video production with behind-the-scenes footage of the war room on draft night. Schoen turned to Daboll and said, 'You guys are convicted in him. You believe in him.'
So, is he Daboll's guy? Schoen's guy? The Giants' guy?
'Jaxson is a guy that was on the radar throughout the fall,' said Schoen, who scouted Dart's final college game in-person.

'Three coaches on staff (Daboll, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney) that have been part of the development of two pretty good quarterbacks in the league right now (Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen), and when they are convicted on a player and the scouting staff is convicted on a player, typically you have the best chance for success in those situations.'
Schoen said the Giants decided three days before the draft to hone in on Dart.
Sanders, who some Giants' evaluators preferred to Dart, surprisingly slipped to the fifth round to the Browns.
'As the draft gets closer, you really start to narrow your circle and you want to eliminate outside voices,' Schoen said. 'My leadership group, along with a couple of the coaches, and that's when we really started to devise a plan.'

Here are some other takeaways from Schoen's appearance:
— Free-agent WR Gabe Davis dined with Schoen on Wednesday night after visiting the facility. Schoen was part of drafting Davis to the Bills as a 2020 fourth-rounder, but Davis was just cut by the Jaguars and is coming off a season-ending knee injury.
'We'll see if anything transpires here down the road,' Schoen said. 'There will be no announcements today.'
— The Giants face a Murderer's Row first four games of the season: At the Commanders, at the Cowboys, home for the Chiefs and home for the Chargers.
'You want to get off to a fast start,' Schoen said. 'That's something we did in 2022 and haven't the last two years.'
Does he embrace having the toughest schedule (by opponents' winning percentage in 2024) in the NFL?
'There's nothing we can do about it,' Schoen said matter-of-factly.

— There is a lot of speculation about implementing an NFL draft lottery to curb late-season tanking talk.
'I would not be in favor of that,' said Schoen, who has made four top-seven picks in his four drafts. 'If you're in that position, you've probably earned the right to get one of those players that can potentially turn the luck around for a franchise for 15-20 years.'

Heliot Ramos, Giants rally from 5-run deficit to defeat Padres

Heliot Ramos hit a tying two-run double in the seventh then Jung Hoo Lee followed with a sacrifice fly that put San Francisco ahead, and the Giants rallied to beat the San Diego Padres 6-5 on Wednesday night. San Francisco ended a stretch of 16 straight games scoring four or fewer runs. Gavin Sheets hit a two-run triple in the first then singled in two more runs in the fifth for San Diego, which had a pair of 10-inning wins to start the four-game series. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to start the ninth against Ryan Walker then right fielder Daniel Johnson ran down Luis Arráez's fly to save an extra-base hit. Manny Machado followed with a single and Randy Rodríguez relieved and recorded the final two outs for his first career save. Matt Chapman hit a two-run homer in the sixth off right-hander Nick Pivetta, who struck out five over six innings and was tagged for five runs on six hits. Heliot Ramos #17 of the San Francisco Giants celebrates after hitting a double at Oracle Park on June 4, 2025 in San Francisco. Suzanna Mitchell/SanPivetta gave way to Jason Adam (5-2) after walking Willy Adames to start the seventh then allowing Daniel Johnson's single. After Patrick Bailey struck out, Tyler Fitzgerald singled to load the bases for Ramos. Sean Hjelle (1-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief for the win in his season debut after being recalled from the minors Tuesday. Sheets' second hit chased Giants lefty Kyle Harrison, who was then checked by an athletic trainer in the dugout after being hit in the pitching elbow with a comebacker. X-rays were negative and Harrison was relieved there's "no damage." He is expected to make at least one more start before Justin Verlander returns from the injured list and rejoins the rotation. The Giants' 16 consecutive games with four or fewer runs ranked as their second longest single-season streak since moving to San Francisco in 1958. They did so in 19 straight games in 1965. RHP Dylan Cease (1-4, 4.66 ERA) pitches the series finale for San Diego opposite Giants LHP Robbie Ray (7-1, 2.43).

Letters to the Editor: The Dodgers' and Giants' Big Oil ads are just normal economic competition

To the editor: Neither the Dodgers nor the Giants are advocating for petroleum over clean energy ('What do the Dodgers and Giants have in common? An iconic ad — for Big Oil,' May 29). They are both providing paid ad services for competitors in the petroleum products industry, which will be with us until we are able to replace all fossil fuels with 100% clean energy sources. The clean energy cause is absolutely crucial to our future. We're getting there pretty quickly, but in the meantime, competitors gonna compete, and they're going to use ads to do so. Advertising for any one or all of them is neither a sin nor a crime, nor even naughty. It is simply competition, and none of it should be held as the least bit despicable as long as the economy continues to require some fossil fuels. After all, would you tell people who would freeze to death if they didn't burn coal that they were doing something immoral, unethical or even illogical, if that was all they had to heat their home? Mark Driskill, Long Beach .. To the editor: I appreciate columnist Sammy Roth's spirited commentaries about Big Oil advertising at sporting events. However, if ever there was a tempest in a teapot, it's this issue. I can't recall anyone ever saying, 'Wow! I saw the 76 ad at Dodger Stadium. I'm buying more gasoline!' To be fair, I've been going to Dodger Stadium for more than 50 years and I couldn't tell you who else has an ad. I'm generally watching the game. Jeffrey R. Knott, Fullerton .. To the editor: In the recent Boiling Point, the shot taken at Phillips 66 is open for debate. One part of the article conveys disappointment from local Dodger fans that the iconic 76 logo will now also adorn the outfield of the rival San Francisco Giants (seriously, who cares?). Others are asking to take down the logo in both stadiums because of its association with the fossil fuel industry. The average reader, I believe, can see both sides, although in most cases reluctantly. But here's a third topic of debate to consider. When you look around beautiful Dodger Stadium — be it the bull pens, the scoreboards or along the foul lines — what do you see? Huge four-color advertisements for alcoholic beverages that, when heavily consumed, can cause distraction and safety concerns for fans and families just wanting to enjoy a night out at the stadium. Heavy consumption of these products, and the aforementioned promotion of alcohol in this environment, never leads to anything good. Fan arguments and fights in the stands or, even worse, malicious attacks in the parking lot after the game. Yes, they're different topics, but it's something to think about.
