BN confident PH cooperation will secure GE16 victory says Zahid

The Sun10 hours ago
GOPENG: Barisan Nasional (BN) remains optimistic that its collaboration with Pakatan Harapan (PH) will secure victories in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pointed to recent by-election results as evidence of the coalition's strengthened performance when working with PH.
During the Gopeng UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting, Zahid referenced the Mahkota and Ayer Kuning by-elections, where BN's majority votes surged significantly compared to GE15.
In Mahkota, BN's majority jumped from 5,166 votes in GE15 to 20,648 in the by-election. Similarly, in Ayer Kuning, the majority expanded from 2,213 to 5,006 votes.
'That's the type of increase we can see from the cooperation with PH,' Zahid stated.
He urged BN leaders and grassroots members to embrace the alliance, emphasizing that unity, not solo efforts, is key to maintaining political dominance.
Perak UMNO chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad echoed the sentiment, revealing that the party's strategy for GE16 includes courting non-party members to bolster BN's electoral prospects. - Bernama

Zahid confident BN-PH ties will lead to election success

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (fourth from right) has defended the coalition's ties with Pakatan Harapan, which has come under criticism from Umno members. GOPENG : Barisan Nasional is confident that the cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) can ensure they retain the seats won in the last general election, its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He said it was based on observations and results of the Mahkota and Ayer Kuning by-elections. He pointed out that BN had secured the Mahkota seat with a majority of 5,166 votes in 2022, but managed to win with a majority of 20,648 votes in the by-election in 2023, thanks to the partnership with PH. 'The same with Ayer Kuning; at the general election, we won with a majority of 2,213 votes, then when the by-election happened, we won with a majority of 5,006 votes. That's the type of increase we can see from the cooperation with PH,' he said at the Gopeng Umno delegates' meeting here today. He said the cooperation with PH should be a guide and reflection for leaders and the grassroots as the strategy is sound and suitable to retain existing power. 'We cannot be proud and arrogant and want to go solo. This is the current reality and by cooperating with PH, we can also become dominant in the national political arena,' he said.

Zahid confirms no going solo, Umno to contest GE16 under BN

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi speaking to party members at the Lumut divisional meeting today. (Bernama pic) LUMUT : Umno will not contest the next general election on its own, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed today, saying the party will remain a component of Barisan Nasional for the elections. Umno would continue to contest the general election (GE16) under BN's dacing (scales) symbol without sidelining partners such as MCA, MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and its unity government partner Pakatan Harapan. Saying Umno had never contested on its own in the past, Zahid dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnerships with other parties in BN and with Pakatan Harapan. '(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo,' he said at the Lumut Umno divisional meeting today. 'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH … that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said. Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had also stated that the party would not go solo at the general election as the party had never done so despite the changing political dynamics.

Show remorse, Zahid tells those eyeing return to Umno

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi with Lumut division members at their general meeting today. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Sacked or suspended Umno members who wish to return to the party's fold must first show remorse and commitment to its cause, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He said the party must also exercise discretion and prudence when dealing with those who criticised it or left in a controversial manner, Berita Harian reported. 'We need to be sensible in our approach, otherwise it would be impossible for members who have been suspended or sacked to return to Umno,' he was quoted as saying. Speaking at the Lumut division's general meeting, Zahid cited the example of a former Kedah Umno leader who had been vocal in his criticisms of the party's leadership, but who now wanted to rejoin Umno. While he did not name the person, Zahid said the member was a division leader and a successful entrepreneur. Zahid also singled out former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman who he said had been consistent in efforts to rejoin Umno following his suspension. Tajuddin was given a six-year suspension from Umno in September 2022, after openly criticising Zahid's leadership. It was however lifted in November 2024 after he apologised to Zahid and persistently appealed his case. 'I'm not cruel,' Zahid said. Zahid's comments come a day after Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said those who had been suspended or sacked must set aside their egos if they truly cared about the party. Akmal also said that he was open to facilitating the return of suspended and sacked Umno leaders such as Khairy Jamaluddin, Hishammuddin Hussein and Shahril Hamdan. Earlier today, Khairy, who was sacked from Umno in January 2023 over alleged disciplinary breaches, said he would consider Akmal's offer.
