Smart Cities scheme aimed to ease traffic or add to chaos: BJP MLAs

Time of India09-07-2025
Pune: A section of BJP MLAs from Pune has highlighted the persistent traffic congestion issue in the district, expressing frustration over project delays, such as the ring road, and poor implementation of initiatives like the
Smart Cities Mission
, which was launched by their own govt in 2015.
Hundred cities were selected for the Smart Cities Mission that concluded this March. The opposition parties have since criticised the BJP-led govts at Center and state over the programme's outcomes, with BJP's own MLA, Rahul Kul from Daund, expressing dissatisfaction in the assembly about the project's implementation in Pune.
Raising the issue of traffic congestion faced by Pune residents, Kul said, "If we look at some works under the Smart Cities Mission, one does not know if the plan was executed to resolve the traffic issues or to add to the chaos.
Under the project, the roads were made narrower and the width of the footpaths was increased."

Kul advocated for integrated planning to resolve Pune's traffic troubles. "The traffic congestion in Pune has become chronic and emergency-like. Therefore, there is a demand from elected representatives to hold a weekly review meeting to find a solution to the growing traffic menace," he said.
The Daund MLA's party colleague and Bhosari MLA, Mahesh Landge, also raised the Pune's traffic problem in the assembly on Wednesday.

"When we are travelling within the city, we have to face the wrath of the citizens as they are fed up with constant traffic issues. While the developments in PMC, PCMC and PMRDA limits are going at a fast pace, it is also leading to more traffic congestion, which state govt would have to find a solution for, at the earliest," Landge said.
While cabinet minister Dada Bhuse, on behalf of state govt, told the assembly that the work on the Pune ring road had started, Landge said, "Though govt claims that the work has started, the ground situation is different.
When the actual work starts, govt should also ensure that all the infrastructural work is completed within the deadline. Only then will it be useful for the present population."
Bhuse assured that the ring road work would be completed by Dec 2027. "As far as the mega projects in the state are concerned, the chief minister, along with his deputies, are taking monthly reviews of those projects. Pune's ring road is part of those projects, and govt will ensure that the 168-km-long project is completed within the stipulated deadline," Bhuse said in the assembly.
Rasane demands 40% tax discount for properties in PMC limits
Times News Network
Pune: Kasba Peth MLA Hemant Rasane on Wednesday urged state govt to provide a 40% discount on property tax for all properties within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits. He also advocated for relaxed side margin norms to facilitate the redevelopment of old wadas and properties.
Rasane was speaking during the discussion on supplementary demands of the Urban Development Department (UDD) at the state assembly session.
He said, "At present, PMC provides a 40% tax rebate only on properties where the owner resides. The rebate is not applicable if tenants occupy the property. This condition should be waived, and all the property owners should receive this discount."
According to Rasane, his constituency consists of many old wadas, and the one-metre side margin requirement under UDCPR rules is creating obstacles in redevelopment. He also demanded that SOPs should be issued urgently by making reforms in traffic plans, the TDR process, construction permissions and redevelopment rules in Metro's TOD zones.
The MLA advocated for speeding up TDR allocation in PMC and the use of the PPP model for the redevelopment of old govt colonies.

Citizens slam delay in opening Aundh to E-Square flyover ramp

1 2 Pune: Citizens are outraged over the delay in opening the flyover ramp on Ganeshkhind Road from Aundh to E-Square. The ramp — part of Pune Metro Line 3's integrated double-decker flyover — has been completed and is structurally ready for use. However, it remains closed to the public as Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has been waiting for a formal nod from either chief minister Devendra Fadnavis or deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar for its inauguration, which is likely to be held next week. Many are outraged that the authorities are waiting for formal inauguration by political leaders, calling it "unjustified and insensitive" in the face of worsening daily traffic along the route You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune Officials confirmed that an invitation letter had been sent for a formal opening. The other two ramps at Pashan and Baner are still under construction and expected to be completed by Oct. "There's no logic in keeping a critical public infrastructure shut just for a ribbon-cutting event," said Rohit K., an IT employee who commutes daily between Aundh and Deccan. "We are stuck in gridlock every single day while the ramp lies unused. It's absurd," he stated. PMRDA officials told TOI that while some minor finishing touches and clearances are awaited, the Aundh ramp is ready for public use. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo "The inauguration request was sent to the state govt. It will be opened to the public post-inauguration," a senior official said. The 1.3 km ramp is part of a larger project designed to decongest the University Chowk junction, one of the most traffic-clogged stretches in Pune. T he integrated structure combines road and Metro Line 3 infrastructure and is intended to serve Pune's transport needs for decades to come. But the much-anticipated relief has now turned into a source of frustration. "Why do citizens have to suffer because someone wants a photo-op?" asked Medha N, a commuter. "They should open all the arms — not just one. Traffic from Pashan and Baner continues to bottleneck at University Chowk. One ramp opening won't solve the problem unless it's fully integrated." A retired urban planner from Aundh told TOI that public infrastructure should serve the public as soon as it's ready — not wait for a formal event." Metro officials confirmed that 37 km of track work—covering both directions of the 23km Metro Line 3 corridor — is complete. The remaining 8–9 km will be ready in the next two months. Trial runs are expected to begin ahead of the formal launch scheduled for March 2026. Consent-based land acquisition in Hinjewadi: PMRDA commissioner PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase on Thursday assured farmers in Hinjewadi and Maan that land for road-widening projects would be acquired only through a consent-based process. Speaking at a meeting at PMRDA's Aundh office, Mhase said farmers who consent to the acquisition would receive 25% higher compensation. He said landowners would have multiple options, including direct purchase, transfer of development rights (TDR), consent-based acquisition, and incentive FSI. VHP foundation day at 1 lakh places

Lucknow: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will adjust to regional cultures while cutting across caste and linguistic lines within the Hindu group to organise the nine-day programmes marking its 61st foundation day celebrations beginning Aug 16. VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said that the idea behind the event is to unify the Hindu community across the country on cultural parameters while adhering to its core Hindutva narrative. He said that the organisation plans to organise events in at least 1 lakh places across the country. This will include religious sermons, satsang, prabhat pheris, and shobha yatras. These events will be channelled by around 90,000 samitis which have been formed at the hyper-local level. "We would thus be present not only in major cities but will also be penetrating deep into villages," Bansal said. In UP alone, the VHP plans to organise programmes in at least 8,000 locations, including the Hindutva nerve centres like Ayodhya, Kashi (Varanasi), and Mathura. "The programmes will be organised keeping in mind local cultures and expectations of the people," Bansal told TOI. VHP's grand foundation day celebration coincides with RSS wider centenary celebrations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When Knee Pain Hits, Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away (It's Genius) Read More Undo Besides temples, the VHP will reach out to Buddhist maths, Jain temples, and gurdwaras. Dalit communities like Ravidasia and Valmiki too are expected to be involved by the right-wing group. The campaign is seen as a blend of soft cultural and Hindutva messaging aimed at broadening its social base. Experts said the right-wing group may well be attempting cultural assimilation across caste, language and regional identities, helping it position as an inclusive yet ideologically firm outfit which presents Hindutva as not just a political doctrine but as a unifying cultural force. Analysts said that VHP's aim to organise programmes in 1 lakh locations nationwide — 8,000 in UP alone — signalled a mass mobilisation drive on a scale reminiscent of earlier campaigns like the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. This grassroots penetration could be used to reinforce the VHP-BJP ideological synergy at the local level, gauge mood, and mobilise cadres for future political contests and pre-empt opposition narratives, especially those rooted in caste identity politics. Son ‘pushed' to B'desh, Malda migrant's dad moves habeas corpus petition

1 2 Kolkata: Malda resident Sk Amir's father Jiyem Sheikh moved a habeas corpus petition in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. Amir, 22, was allegedly pushed into Bangladesh by Rajasthan police on the night of July 22 on suspicion he was an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant. Sheikh told TOI earlier that his eldest son, Amir, had gone to Chittor in Rajasthan with a bunch of others from the neighbourhood to work as a labourer. He had said that while those accompanying his son had their EPICs, PANs and Aadhaars, his son only had his Aadhaar on him. According to the father, Amir tried to convince police officials that he was from Malda in Bengal, but the cops branded him 'Bangladeshi'. Later, a video emerged that purportedly showed Amir crying. His father then received a call from the person who had shot the video informing him that Amir was at Ghumra in Bangladesh. Under the leadership and guidance of the honourable chief minister of West Bengal, we stand firmly with every Bengali who faces harassment at the hands of the anti-Bengali BJP. " This is the second such habeas corpus petition filed in Calcutta HC on people from Bengal being pushed to Bangladesh after being labelled Bangladeshi. All six were residents of Muraroi in Birbhum, including three minors. The case is likely to be heard on Friday. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
