He alleged that the BJP wants to keep the coming generations uneducated because educated individuals are likely to be more positive, tolerant, and resistant to the kind of "negative politics" of the BJP.
"Education brings awareness, and with it comes the courage to stand united against exploitation and oppression. The self-confidence gained through education poses a threat to authoritarian parties like the BJP," he said, adding, "If there are no schools, there will be no opposition to the BJP."
Live Events
The former chief minister expressed fears that closing government schools in villages could pave the way for BJP-affiliated organisations to open their institutions "under the garb of service," where they could allegedly propagate "divisive ideologies."
Yadav further accused the ruling party of fostering a crowd of "uneducated, superstitious, and unscientific minds" that could be easily manipulated.
"A truly educated and socially conscious person can never support an ideology like that of the BJP," he said.
Highlighting the symbolic importance of having schools within sight, he said, "It is well known that what disappears from sight disappears from the mind. If schools are no longer visible in villages, the very inspiration for education will vanish."
Questioning the government's priorities, Yadav argued, "If a polling booth can be set up for a single voter, why can't a school be run for 30 children?"
Calling it a part of a broader "conspiracy to further marginalise the already deprived PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) communities," Yadav urged for resistance against the move and demanded the protection and expansion of government-run schools across Uttar Pradesh.
According to sources, the Yogi-Adityanath-led government decided to merge schools to rationalise educational resources and address issues such as low enrolment, teacher shortage, and duplication of infrastructure.
The move, officials claim, aims to consolidate small and under-enrolled schools and merge them with nearby institutions.
There are about 1.40 lakh primary and upper primary government schools in the state, out of which 29,000 have 50 or fewer students, an official said, adding that around 89,000 teachers are posted in these schools.
Yadav also posted a news story from Kannauj, which alleges 38 schools in the districts are facing fear of merger.

Karnataka BJP Leader N Ravikumar Faces FIR Over Derogatory Remarks Against Chief Secretary

Bengaluru: Karnataka Police have filed an FIR against the Chief Whip and BJP MLC N. Ravikumar on Thursday for allegedly issuing derogatory remarks on the Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. The Karnataka IAS Officers' Association has condemned the derogatory remarks by Ravikumar. The body has demanded an unconditional apology. Ravikumar made the controversial statement on July 1 in the presence of the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, and police officials. Expressing his displeasure over Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh not being present to receive a submission from a BJP delegation, Ravikumar allegedly mocked her, saying that she is always occupied during the day with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's work and only performs her government duties at night. Vidhana Soudha police in Bengaluru have filed an FIR against Ravikumar under Sections 351 (3), 75 (3) and 79 of the BNS Act. Naagaratna, a social worker, has filed the complaint in this regard. The Karnataka IAS Officers' Association has stated that, "The Association strongly condemns the derogatory and offensive remarks made by MLC Ravikumar against the Chief Secretary to the government. The Chief Secretary holds the highest civil office in Karnataka and is a widely respected officer known for her integrity, commitment, and distinguished public service, the association stated. The body has demanded a public and unconditional apology from Ravikumar. It has also urged immediate legal action under applicable provisions of law. It has also demanded a formal resolution of censure in the Legislative Council. "Civil servants must be allowed to discharge their duties without fear, insult or political intimidation. We urge the government to uphold the institutional dignity and take prompt and exemplary action in this regard," the association demanded. Meanwhile, the second Congress delegation of senior leaders, Saleem Ahmed, B. K. Hariprasad, Manjunath Bhandari, Nagraj Yadav, Balkis Banu, Mallajamma, Ramoji Gowda, D. T. Srinivas and Ramesh Babu met the Chairman of the Legislative Council, Basavaraj Horatti and submitted a complaint urging the suspension of the membership of Ravikumar. Ravikumar had earlier stirred controversy by suggesting that Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fauzia Tarannum might have come from Pakistan. Responding to the controversy, Ravikumar said that he did not make any derogatory remarks against her. "I am shocked by the circulation of selective video clips and claims in print and social media alleging that I have spoken in a derogatory manner against the Chief Secretary. I have been in Hyderabad on official work for the past three days," he stated. "On June 30, 2025, I, along with Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and other Dalit leaders, staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue near Vidhana Soudha condemning the Forest Department for taking over land in Kadugodi, Mahadevapura constituency, where Dalit families have been cultivating for several years. To draw the government's attention to this issue, we have been trying to meet the Hon'ble Chief Minister and the Hon'ble Chief Secretary, but neither has been accessible. He further stated, "I merely stated that the Chief Secretary is busy - I did not utter a single word that could be construed as derogatory toward her." "During the protest, I did not make any speech targeting the Chief Secretary, nor did I speak to the media. Therefore, the question of making any derogatory statement against the Chief Secretary does not arise," Ravikumar stated. "The report being circulated about me is completely baseless, misleading, malicious, and defamatory. Apart from stating that the Chief Secretary is occupied with government work, I have not spoken in any derogatory manner against her. I completely reject the allegation."

2,289 govt. staff taken off beneficiary list of Ladki Bahin Yojana

The Maharashtra government has removed 2,289 government employees from the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana following a verification drive to weed out ineligible beneficiaries and ensure targeted delivery of the welfare scheme for women. Their names were removed from the list of beneficiaries, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare said in a written reply to the State Assembly on Thursday, adding that her department has stepped up efforts to cross-check beneficiaries and uphold the integrity of the flagship scheme. Launched by the BJP-led Mahayuti government in August 2023 ahead of the November 2024 Assembly election, the scheme provides monthly aid of ₹1,500 to nearly 2.4 crore women in the 21-65 age group through direct benefit transfer to improve their health, nutrition, and decision-making capacity. In May this year, Ms. Tatkare said it was detected that over 2,200 government employees were receiving the aid despite being ineligible for it. With the latest update, the number of such ineligible beneficiaries stands at 2,289. The Minister also informed the Assembly that for 2025-26, the budgetary allocation for the scheme has been made from the general category funds (₹28,290 crore) of her department as well as ₹3,240 crore from the Tribal Development Department's funds and ₹3,960 crore from the funds of the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department. Loan facility The State government is also considering a proposal to allow the beneficiaries of the scheme to take loans against the monthly instalment and start micro-businesses, the Minister said.

He didn't shake hands: Angela Merkel calls Donald Trump attention-seeker; recalls incident from 2017

Donald Trump (left), Angela Merkel (ANI, AP) Former German chancellor Angela Merkel called US President Donald Trump an attention-seeker, while speaking at an event organised by Greek newspaper Kathimerini in Athens on Wednesday. Merkel was attending an event to promote the Greek edition of her memoir 'Freedom' when she recalled an incident from March 2017. At a meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, he refused to shake hands with her, an incident that took place off-camera, outside the main room. "I made the mistake of saying, 'Donald, we should shake hands,' and he didn't. He wanted to draw attention to himself. That's what he wants: to distract and have everyone look at him,' Merkel said. "You can see this in what he is doing with the tariffs. Ultimately, he must deliver good results for the American people. He has to prove his abilities, at least to his own country,' she added. She went on to urge the European Union to stand up to Trump's tariff threats and not be intimidated. 'Europeans must stand united and not be intimidated when Trump imposes more tariffs on the bloc, but we should retaliate with tariffs of our own.' "I'm not saying we should break off relations with the US, but we must negotiate. Even the US cannot survive alone,' Merkel said, adding: 'I see a problematic development. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo When Vice President Vance says, 'we are partners, and we will only support you if you agree with our concept of freedom,' which means no rules and no controls, that is indeed a threat to our democracy." Merkel was at the helm of European affairs as the de-facto leader of the EU during Trump's first Presidency, but the pair never had an easy rapport. Describing this often-strained equation, she wrote about Trump in her memoir: 'He judged everything from the perspective of the property entrepreneur he had been before politics. Each property could only be allocated once. If he didn't get it, someone else did. That was also how he looked at the world. ' 'For him, all countries were in competition with each other, in which the success of one was the failure of the other; he did not believe that the prosperity of all could be increased through co-operation.'
