CM Naidu to launch Annadata scheme on August 2; Rs 7,000 aid for 46.8 lakh farmers in first phase
The initiative, aimed at benefiting 46,85,838 farmers across the State, will be launched by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu at Veerayapalem in Darsi mandal of Prakasam district.
Under the first phase of the scheme, each eligible farmer will get Rs 5,000 directly credited into their bank accounts, with the State government allocating Rs 2,342.92 crore for the implementation of the scheme. Combined with the Centre's Rs 2,000 aid under the PM Kisan scheme, farmers will receive a total of Rs 7,000 on August 2.
The coalition government is committed to providing Rs 14,000 per annum per farmer in three installments (Rs 5,000, Rs 5,000, and Rs 4,000), in addition to the Centre's Rs 6,000 under the PM Kishan, extending a total aid of Rs 20,000 to each beneficiary under the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme

Kolkata man found dead, family says he ended life fearing NRC deportation
The family of a 63-year-old man who was found dead in his Kolkata residence Sunday alleged that he died by suicide since he was living in fear of being deported to Bangladesh under the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), police said. A suicide note purportedly written by the victim, Dilip Kumar Saha, an Indian citizen, was found from the spot, police said. Saha, who reportedly moved to Kolkata from Nawabganj in Dhaka in 1972, was found hanging in his room in the Anandapally West area of Regent Park. Police said Saha's wife Arati Saha, and another relative broke into the room after he did not respond to their repeated calls. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Arati claimed that her husband was under mental stress as he feared being sent to a detention camp and eventually deported to Bangladesh even as he possessed valid voter ID and other documents. Saha worked as a non-teaching staffer at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The matter is under investigation, police said. Meanwhile, local TMC MLA and Power Minister Arup Biswas, who visited the family, said, 'This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you.' Later in the day, the TMC held a press meet, with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh holding the BJP-led Centre responsible for Saha's death. Ghosh accused the Centre of creating 'an atmosphere of terror' that is causing 'valid Indians' to fear for their lives, especially those who may struggle to produce their parents' documents. Education Minister Bratya Basu also condemned the incident, calling the BJP's 'insulting and harassing' notices to Hindu Bengalis regarding the NRC. 'The way in which the BJP has been sending NRC notices to Hindu Bengalis, is to insult and harass them. Not being able to tolerate this, Dilip Kumar Saha has ended his life. OPS-Nainar spat continues; TTV bats to bring him back
Chennai: The spat between state BJP president Nainar Nagenthran and former AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam continued on Sunday too, with the two denying each other's claims. While OPS showed messages he had sent to Nainar as proof of reaching out to him, the BJP leader said these were not enough. Even as the two leaders sparred, AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran urged the BJP's national and state leaders to bring OPS back to NDA. The day also saw OPS asking his supporters not to talk about alliances and warned of action if they violated. The fresh exchanges began with Nainar demanding proof for OPS's claim that he had attempted to reach out to the BJP leader seeking an appointment with PM Narendra Modi when he visited Tamil Nadu last month. Nainar said that though OPS levelled charges against him, he would not do so in return. Within hours, OPS showed reporters at Madurai airport the messages he had sent to Nainar from his mobile. Later in the day, when reporters met Nainar at Odanilai and asked him about the messages, the BJP leader said displaying such messages from his cellphone were not enough as proof of communication. Meanwhile, TTV Dhinakaran said BJP's Delhi leaders as well as those in TN should bring OPS back to the NDA. "OPS was with BJP even before I joined NDA. BJP leaders should take steps to bring him back," he said. He blamed unnamed leaders for forcing OPS's exit from NDA and expressed confidence OPS would not join DMK. Later in the day, OPS issued a statement, warning his supporters and cadres not to talk about alliances. Instead, he said they should campaign about problems faced by people because of DMK govt and hold public rallies to explain how AIADMK is crumbling. Delay hits Scorpene retrofit to boost stealth, endurance
NEW DELHI: India has once again missed the boat to enhance the underwater operational endurance and stealth of its latest Scorpene or Kalvari-class conventional submarines, with the already delayed air independent propulsion (AIP) system developed by DRDO still not ready for integration with the vessels. The first Scorpene submarine to be built at the Mazagon Docks (MDL) with French collaboration, INS Kalvari, which was commissioned in Dec 2017, will now complete her ongoing maintenance refit at the Mumbai naval dockyard without being retrofitted with the AIP plug as was originally planned, defence ministry sources told TOI. "The fuel cell-based AIP system developed by DRDO's Naval Materials Research Lab, which has L&T as the prime industry partner, is still not yet operationally available. Hopefully, it should be ready by the time the second Scorpene (INS Khanderi) comes for her scheduled normal maintenance refit in mid-2026," a source said. The Navy after a long delay has inducted six diesel-electric Scorpene submarines, constructed by MDL in collaboration with the French Naval Group under Project-75 for over Rs 23,000 crore, with the sixth INS Vagsheer being commissioned in Jan this year. Under it, each submarine will undergo a complex project called "jumboisation", involving precision cutting of the hull, safe insertion of the AIP plug and then rejoining the structure to ensure the vessel is fully operational again. Unlike nuclear-powered submarines, which have unlimited underwater endurance, diesel-electric boats must surface or snorkel every couple of days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. Those fitted with AIP, however, can stay submerged for around two weeks to significantly boost their stealth and combat capabilities. With Pakistan on course to induct eight Yuan or Hangor-class conventional submarines with AIP from China in a major capability jump, India's depleting conventional underwater combat arm has become a major worry. China, of course, now has the world's largest navy, which includes over 50 diesel-electric and 10 nuclear submarines. Apart from the six French-origin Scorpenes, India has seven very old Russian Kilo-class and four German HDW diesel-electric submarines at present. It also has two operational SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles) in INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, with the third to be commissioned as INS Aridhaman this year, as reported by TOI earlier. The long-pending projects to build three additional Scorpenes for Rs 38,000 crore and six new-generation diesel-electric submarines, with both AIP and land-attack cruise missiles, for Rs 70,000 crore under Project-75-India at MDL, are also yet to be finalised and inked.
