Pulivendula ZPTC bypoll becomes prestige issue for TDP, YSRCP

Time of Indiaa day ago
Tirupati: It's a small by-election, but with high stakes. The Pulivendula zilla parishad territorial constituency (ZPTC) bypoll in Kadapa district has become a battle for political supremacy between the ruling TDP-led NDA alliance and the opposition YSRCP, with both groups leaving no stone unturned to win the prestige battle as polling day (Aug 12) approaches.
Pulivendula is the hometown of former chief ministers YS Rajasekhar Reddy and his son YS Jaganmohan Reddy, while Kadapa is known to be a stronghold of YSRCP. So it is not only a prestige issue to retain the ZPTC seat, YSRCP also wants to reaffirm its firm grip on Pulivendula politics, from where the YS family members have won consecutive assembly elections for over 46 years now.
To retain Pulivendula ZPTC seat, which was won by YSRCP leader Maheshwar Reddy in 2021, YSRCP has fielded his son T Hemanth Reddy.
Maheshwar Reddy died in Feb 2023 following a freak fall from a bullock cart, which necessitated the bypoll. Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy and YSRCP general secretary S V Satish Reddy, who are spearheading YSRCP's bypoll campaign, are majorly relying on YS family's connect with Pulivendula and the sympathy factor following Maheshwar Reddy's demise, to boost his son Hemanth's winning chances.
The TDP-led NDA alliance, which won seven out of 10 assembly seats in Kadapa district, is hell-bent on winning the Pulivendula ZPTC bypoll to make further inroads into Jagan's bastion.
TDP
has fielded M Latha Reddy, wife of its former MLC Mareddy Ravindra Reddy (B Tech Ravi).
The bigwigs of NDA alliance, including MLAs, MLCs, ministers, and MPs are campaigning in Pulivendula to cement the winning prospects of Latha Reddy.
Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari expressed confidence of breaking the myth of Pulivendula being the bastion of Jagan. "He was the chief minister for five years but couldn't manage to bring any development to his own constituency. Unlike the YSRCP regime, TDP rule has benefited every section of the society.
People of Pulivendula firmly believe that it is the TDP that can bring development to Pulivendula," the TDP MP said.
As many as 11 candidates, including eight independents, have filed nominations to contest the Pulivendula ZPTC by-election. However, the main battle will be between the TDP and YSRCP candidates. Kadapa police remain on high alert following incidents of violence and clashes between the followers of the two parties. Cases have been filed against both TDP and YSRCP leaders, including Kadapa MP Avinash Reddy and his father Y S Bhaskar Reddy.

YSRCP demands action on police bias

Guntur: A delegation from YSRCP submitted a memorandum to the DGP office on Sunday urging swift intervention against rampant police misconduct in the ongoing ZPTC by-elections in Pulivendula and Vontimitta in Kadapa district. The team led by MLCs Lella Appi Reddy and Ramesh Yadav, Vijayawada Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi, former minister Merugu Nagarjuna, former MLAs Malladi Vishnu, TJR Sudhakar Babu, Kaile Anil, leaders Devineni Avinash, Narayanamurthy and D Chakravarthy highlighted how police, acting as proxies for the ruling TDP-led coalition, have undermined fair polls through false cases, illegal detentions, and protection of TDP aggressors. Despite four days of efforts to secure an appointment, the delegation proceeded directly to the DGP's office in Mangalagiri, handing over the memorandum to staff in his absence. They decried the collapse of law and order, where police in 'yellow shirts' prioritise TDP victories over constitutional duties, stifling YSRCP campaigns and enabling attacks on opposition cadres. 'The police conduct is a grave insult to democracy, turning elections into a contest against law enforcement itself,' asserted MLC Lella Appireddy, emphasising that TDP wins would essentially be police-engineered. He questioned the DGP's inaction amid biased polling centre shifts and voter intimidation, demanding measures to ensure free and fair voting.

‘Behenji' gets a new ‘bhai': Mayawati ties rakhi to Umashankar Singh; BSP's only MLA in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: This Raksha Bandhan was special for BSP MLA from Ballia's Rasra, Umashankar Singh, as party supremo Mayawati tied a rakhi on his wrist. "Outside her family, Behenji has tied a rakhi only to Lalji Tandon. I may be the second fortunate one," said Singh, BSP's sole MLA in the UP Assembly. Mayawati had earlier declared Lalji Tandon, the late BJP functionary, as her "sworn brother. " Within her family, she has a younger sibling, Anand Kumar, who is also the party's vice-president. "I had told Behenji two days ago that I would come on Raksha Bandhan, and when I reached her place, I saw she had all the preparations in place for me. It was the true blessing of an elder sister," said Singh. When asked what gift he gave his "elder sister," Singh said, "My gift was my promise to her that I am not going anywhere from here. I will always stay with her and with this party." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). J-K deputy CM hopeful of PM announcing restoration of statehood on Independence Day

'The people of Jammu and Kashmir have never accepted the 2019 decision. The promise made by the prime minister and home minister (Amit Shah) that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time must now be fulfilled.' 'It is the most appropriate time to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir by pushing a bill regarding the same in current (Monsoon) session of parliament,' the deputy chief minister said. Addressing a public meeting organized by the National Conference at Tali Morh Bari near here, Choudhary recalled the events of August 5, 2019 and alleged the downgrading of a full-fledged state into two Union territories — J&K and Ladakh — was done arbitrarily. Jammu, Aug 10 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Sunday expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory from the ramparts of Red Fort in his address to the nation on Independence Day. 'Hopefully, the PM shall announce restoration of statehood to J&K on August 15 during his speech to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort,' he said. Choudhary also highlighted the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government like free travel for women in government-run buses, enhancement of marriage assistance from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, 200 units of free electricity for AAY households, and increase in pension for senior citizens, widows and physically challenged. National Conference provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta emphasized that the 2024 assembly elections have sent a clear message that the massive mandate given by the people in favour of the party is a rejection of the 2019 move to downgrade the erstwhile state into UT. He said the democratic mandate must be respected. Reaffirming the ruling party's commitment to equitable development, he said the National Conference has intensified its mass contact programme across Jammu region. 'We are reaching out to the people to listen to their grievances, ensure timely redressal, and make them aware of the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government over the past 10 months,' Gupta said. He said the party firmly stands with the aspirations of people and will continue to advocate restoration of full statehood and the rights of the citizens of J&K.
