Jails in Maharashtra Overcrowded, 12,343 Inmates Beyond Capacity: Fadnavis in Council
"Against an official capacity of 27,184 inmates across central, district, and various-grade prisons in the state, there were 39,527 prisoners lodged as of May 2025," Fadnavis said in the state legislative council.
Notably, Mumbai Central Jail, designed to house 999 prisoners, currently accommodates 3,268 inmates—over three times its intended capacity.
Fadnavis was responding to a starred question raised by MLCs Satej Patil, Ashok Jagtap, Avinash Jadhav, and others regarding the alarming overcrowding in the state's correctional facilities.
The CM informed the House that around 6,003 inmates are serving life terms, while 5,067 are undertrials.
A large number—over 23,000—are either serving or awaiting trial for life or long-term sentences. Many of them are between 18 and 30 years of age.
"To tackle the issue, the government has planned the construction of new prisons and additional barracks across the state. These measures will increase prison capacity by 17,110 in the coming period," Fadnavis said, adding that land is being identified for new jails.
Despite the surge in inmate numbers, the prison administration is providing basic amenities such as clean drinking water, e-mulaqat, e-kiosks, video conferencing, smart card phone services, and televisions to improve living conditions, he said.

"Vocational training, adult education, spiritual programs, yoga, counselling, and formal degree programs are already underway in partnership with NGOs and universities like YCMOU and IGNOU. Agreements have also been signed with institutions such as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives to support rehabilitation," Fadnavis added.
He also said the state is extending financial assistance under the 'Support to Poor Prisoners' scheme to help economically disadvantaged inmates secure bail or pay fines. Free legal aid continues to be provided through district legal services authorities and social service organisations.

Jarkiholi-Jolle camp regains edge over Katti faction in Hukkeri sugar plant
Belagavi: The ongoing political rivalry between the Jarkiholi-Jolle faction and the Katti family in Hukkeri taluka took a dramatic turn on Monday, with the board of management of Hiranyakeshi Sugar Factory, led by Basavaraj Kallatti, once again pledging its allegiance to the Jarkiholi-Jolle camp, delivering a significant blow to the Katti family. Founded in 1956 by cooperative stalwart Appanagouda Patil on the outskirts of Sankeshwar town, the factory was under the Katti family's control since 1995. However, in January 2025, the faction led by BJP's former MP Annasaheb Jolle and Arabhavi MLA Balachandra Jarkiholi wrested control, following the defection of seven directors. This led to the resignation of Nikhil Katti as chairman, ending the Kattis' three-decade dominance at the factory. The shift was largely driven by financial assurances from Jolle, who channeled funds through his Beereshwar Cooperative Credit Society. However, dissatisfaction over high interest rates prompted board members to approach local leaders Ramesh Katti and AB Patil, urging them to take charge of the factory. In a rare political alliance, long-time rivals Katti and Patil joined forces and regained control of the factory on July 29 this year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Online Skin Care Consultation - Learn More AskLayers Learn More Undo Yet, within 12 days, the factory once again slipped from their grasp and returned to the Jarkiholi-Jolle camp. Speaking to the media, vice-chairman Ashok Pattanashetti said: "The factory needs Rs 150 crore for smooth operations. We turned to Ramesh Katti and AB Patil, who had promised alternative sources of funding, but failed. Jolle's assistance is now crucial in getting the factory up and running." Commenting on the prevailing scenario, Annasaheb Jolle said: "The factory stands as a symbol of Appanagouda Patil's vision of the cooperative movement. My involvement, along with Balachandra Jarkiholi, is solely to uphold those ethos and ensure the factory's sustainability." Speaker seeks probe into road damage
Mangaluru: Speaker UT Khader, who is also the MLA representing the Mangaluru constituency, wrote to PWD minister Satish Jarkiholi and the PWD principal secretary for immediate repairs of the roads that were damaged in his constituency following heavy rainfall. In a letter to the minister and department principal secretary, Khader stated that the road stretch from Chembugudde to Kuthar, connecting Thokkotu, was laid three years ago. However, large portions of the surface of the road deteriorated, making it unfit for smooth vehicular movement. Khader demanded a probe into the damage to the road within three years and sought action against lapses. Seeking immediate repairs to restore the road for public use, the speaker directed the department to initiate action in case of any lapses in the work. "Conduct an investigation to find the reason for the deterioration of the road in my constituency. Take appropriate action if any lapses are found," Khader directed. He said the PWD was upgrading the state highway from Thokkotu to Mudipu in Ullal taluk into a two-lane road. This stretch serves as a crucial link connecting several educational institutions, the Ullal taluk office, and multiple schools and colleges, he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In a related development, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Ullal taluk committee held a protest on Monday, accusing the authorities concerned of damage to the road from Thokkotu to Kuthar.
