Schoolgirls arrested for allegedly stealing RM40,000

By: Amir Anuar Text Size: TAWAU: Two schoolgirls were arrested here last Tuesday for allegedly stealing around RM40,000 in cash belonging to their grandfather, which had been hidden under his bed. The theft was discovered by the victim after checking his savings, which were supposed to total RM60,000 but were found to be significantly less, raising suspicion of theft. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the victim suspected that the incident was linked to his two granddaughters, aged 15 and 13. 'The victim informed his son about the suspicious matter and the son later reported the case to the police,' he said, Thursday. Jasmin said the 43-year-old complainant, who is also the uncle of the two suspects, went to Bombalai police station on the same day the incident occurred. The missing money was discovered by the complainant's father when checking his savings. The theft is believed to have occurred around 7am. 'Further inspection around the victim's residence in Kampung Durian Merotai Besar found no other valuables reported missing. 'The police then arrested both suspects at 4.45pm in front of the District Criminal Investigation Division Office on the same day the complaint was made,' he said. Bank officer loses RM241,700 to online vehicle scam
KUALA TERENGGANU: A bank officer lost RM241,700 after falling victim to an online vehicle scam while attempting to purchase a four-wheel drive. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 52-year-old victim lodged a report at the district police station at 9.37am yesterday. He said on July 4, at 12.30pm, the victim came across a used car advertisement on Facebook by a company allegedly based in West Port, Port Klang, Selangor. "The victim was interested in buying a 2017 Toyota Hilux 2.4. He clicked on the link, which redirected him to WhatsApp, supposedly for the next step in the purchase," he said. The man was then contacted by an individual who requested a copy of his identity card and several payments to proceed with the transaction. Between July 9 and 21, the victim made 40 transactions to 18 different bank accounts, amounting to RM241,700. Azli said the scammer later demanded an additional RM31,000, claiming it was for customs fingerprint verification. "This led the victim to suspect he had been duped, and he stopped further payments," he said. The four-wheel drive was never delivered. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Contractor charged with using false documents in RM50,000 claim
ALOR SETAR: A contractor pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Monday (July 28) to an alternative charge of using forged documents for claims worth RM50,000 eight years ago. Fakhruziyahdy Shaari, 53, was charged with using a set of forged documents regarding maintenance work on 16 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the Community Rehabilitation Centre, Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Camp in Kem Lapangan Terbang Sungai Petani on Nov 20, 2017. The charge, under Section 471 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 465, provides for a maximum jail term of two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction. The court set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and set Aug 19 for mention. – Bernama

Russia's night attack on Kyiv leaves eight injured, including child, Ukraine says
KYIV (Reuters) -A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Monday. Four of those injured in the attack, which took place soon after midnight on Monday, have been hospitalised, with one person in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that all of the people were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the city's Darnytskyi district on the left bank of the Dnipro River. "The blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to the 11th floor," Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks. With the threat of missile strikes on western parts of Ukraine that border Poland - a NATO member - Polish armed forces scrambled aircraft to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi came under an attack, regional Governor Andriy Raikovych said, adding that emergency services were working on the site and information about potential damage will be released later on Monday. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. Reuters' witnesses heard loud blasts shaking the city of Kyiv overnight in what sounded like air defence units in operation. There was no comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war that Russia started in February 2022.
