Mother heard 'shouting for help' after roof ripped off when double-decker bus ploughed into low bridge
The woman, who asked not be named, raced to the scene of devastation to help terrified passengers when a Stagecoach bus collided with the Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct in Salford on Monday.
Three people - a 19-year-old female, and two men, one is his 20s and another in his 40s - were left seriously injured by the shocking crash, while a further 17 people were treated at the scene for non-life threatening or non-life changing injuries.
The resident, who has lived on the street since 2016, said she saw people on the bus bleeding, with some having sustained head injuries.
One woman was also lying on the road after being flung from the top deck. The resident helped place her into the recovery position before ambulance crews arrived.
The mother-of-three claims to have seen at least 10 other large vehicles crash into the bridge - including three buses, bin lorries and a cement truck - and called for urgent action to prevent further tragedies.
Greater Manchester Police have since arrested the driver of the bus, a man in his 50s, on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.
He has been bailed pending further investigations.
The woman recorded harrowing footage of the crash on her Ring doorbell, which shows the roof of the No.100 service being torn straight off as it attempted to pass under the bridge which stands at just 11ft 6 inches.
Distressed drivers were seen quickly slamming the brakes, as the large yellow bus left a trail of scattered glass and debris in its wake.
Seconds after the collision, witnesses and locals were seen running out of their houses and up the street in an attempt to catch up with the bus.
She said: 'I ran over to help, shouting for people to come and help - you could see people with head injuries, blood. People were helping somebody on the top of the bus.
'We just ran out and did what we could, really. My first concern was the casualty lying on the floor who'd come off the back of the bus. God, she was only young. Putting her in the recovery position.
'Paramedics were there pretty quick, and then just helping other casualties, getting them sat down.
'From the last bus hitting [in 2023], they've not replaced the wooden beam, which is another safety measure. I know there's chains, they have an arch with chains.
'Vehicles are forever reversing up the road, they think they can get under the bridge and then they realise once they get to the bridge.
'I think this is about the tenth vehicle that we've dealt with that's hit the bridge, and nothing seems to have improved.'
The frustrated mother says she's repeatedly reported crashes to police and the Bridgewater Canal's owner, Peel L&P, but says nothing seems to have changed.
The bridge has become somewhat of an accident hotspot in recent times, with separate instances in June 2020 and December 2023 seeing the roofs of two double deckers severely damaged as drivers smashed into it.
The site of the crash is just 100 metres from the Barton Swing Aqueduct, the first and only swing aqueduct in the world.
The resident said she thinks not enough is being done to protect them from damage.
She added: 'It's just not looked after, from the bridge point of view, the road users' point of view - it's been an accident waiting to happen.
'All the professionals come out to look at it, and nothing seems to get - they put the signs up but then a bus hits it on the other side and they don't put the beam and sign back up again, and then this happens again.'
Another local added: 'I was shocked but not surprised as this is the third time this has happened. Another bus and a lorry have done it. You feel for the people on the bus.'

A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) yesterday confirmed a formal investigation had been launched into why the bus was 'off route'.
The bus typically departs from Shudehill and travels to Salford, Trafford Centre and Warrington, but TfGM said it was 'not on its usual route at the time of the collision'.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said it was for local authorities to deal with maintenance, repairs, and inspections of roads.
Peel, Salford Council and Transport for Greater Manchester were contacted for comment.
A second bus has since crashed into another low bridge in the Manchester area this morning - although there have been no reported casualties involved.
The vehicle, a Metroline Manchester driver training bus, collided with the bridge on Ten Acres Lane in Newton Heath at some point before 8.30am.

I was babysitting and received a furious text from the kids' mum because I ordered DoorDash
A babysitter has found herself out of a job after a furious mother fired her on the spot - all because she ordered herself some dinner. The woman, who shared her story in a Reddit post, revealed she was watching two toddlers when hunger struck, prompting her to place a DoorDash food order. The children were asleep, the parents were already two hours late, and she hadn't eaten since lunchtime. But none of that mattered to the mum, who branded her behaviour irresponsible in a now-viral series of texts. 'I hadn't eaten since lunch and thought I'd be done by eight like they mentioned,' the babysitter explained in the post. 'I started getting a headache and really needed to eat something. I've ordered food before while babysitting and it's never been a problem, so I didn't think it would be an issue.' But what she thought was a harmless snack sparked an angry tirade from the children's mother, who was monitoring the home through a Ring doorbell camera and spotted the food being delivered. 'Hey our ring just showed someone at the door,' the mum texted. 'Was something delivered?' When the babysitter replied, 'Yes, I didn't eat dinner so I ordered DoorDash,' the mum's tone quickly changed. 'Okay we'll talk when we get home, but I'm really concerned that you would do that without asking first,' she wrote. 'I would never be okay with a stranger coming to the door while my kids are sleeping.' 'Please check to make sure the storm door is locked as well since you opened it.' The babysitter apologised, reiterating that she'd waited until the delivery driver had left before quietly stepping outside to quickly collect the bag - and ensured all doors were locked behind her. 'I honestly didn't think it would be a problem,' she replied. 'I'm always hyper aware of safety and would never do anything that I felt put the kids in my care at risk.' But the mum wasn't having it, and was still clearly angry. 'I get that you were hungry, but it's more about the fact that someone came to the door without my knowledge and you left them in the house alone while you grabbed it,' she said. 'If something had happened, it just makes me really nervous. You could have eaten from the cabinet. This is my home and my kids, and I need to be able to fully trust who's here.' The children were asleep, the parents were already two hours late, and she hadn't eaten since lunchtime. But none of that mattered to the mum, who branded her behaviour irresponsible in a now-viral series of texts The babysitter was told the family could no longer trust her and that her services were no longer needed. The post has since gone viral, racking up thousands of views and triggering a wave of support for the babysitter, who many argue was treated unfairly. One commenter, who identified themselves as a parent, wrote: 'I'm a mum and I would be so embarrassed to be that late, let alone leaving a babysitter with no food. She should have offered to DoorDash whatever you wanted at her expense.' Another pointed out the irony of the situation: 'She found you on Facebook and barely asked any questions before leaving her two babies with a total stranger. But a sandwich on the porch is the line? That's wild.' Dozens of others agreed, calling the mum's behaviour 'over-the-top,' 'controlling,' and 'hypocritical.' 'They are majorly overreacting,' one user wrote. 'You didn't leave the kids alone while you got your food. You opened the door, grabbed it, and locked everything behind you.' Another summed it up bluntly: 'People are crazy. If you're THAT concerned about your kids, maybe you should take care of them yourself.' While the babysitter admitted she was shocked and upset to lose the job, commenters were quick to reassure her she was better off. 'Not sure that it sucks that this client was lost,' one Redditor wrote. 'Probably a blessing. They're two hours late getting home, but God forbid the babysitter orders something to eat.' Another added: 'You didn't lose a client - you dodged a nightmare.' Despite the controversy, the babysitter said she stood by her actions, saying she prioritised the children's safety and would never leave them unattended for any longer than absolutely necessary. As the post continues to gain traction, it's sparking a wider debate online about the unrealistic expectations some parents place on caregivers, especially when they don't even offer so much as a granola bar in return.

Parents' terror as nursery goes into lockdown amid quadruple stabbing in London that left two men dead and a third fighting for his life in hospital
A mother has revealed she was 'terrified' after receiving a call from her two-year-old son's nursery to say that there had been a fatal quadruple stabbing outside a business just minutes away. Emergency services rushed to Long Lane, Southwark, south London, at around 1pm on Monday after receiving reports of a stabbing which has since left two men dead. When police and medics arrived on the road, which is near to London Bridge and Tower Bridge, they discovered that four people had suffered stab wounds. As a result, a 58-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene before a 27-year-old man later died in hospital - sparking the launch of a murder probe by detectives. The man who has been detained in connection with the incident, who police say is in his 30s, is in a critical condition and fighting for his life in hospital. Meanwhile, the other man, also in his 30s, has suffered injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. However, the stabbing has shaken some locals so badly that they have revealed they are now considering fleeing the area over safety concerns. One concerned mother who lives nearby told MailOnline how she heard of the stabbing through her child's nursery, which lies just minutes away from the scene which last night was crawling with forensics officers. The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said: '[The nursery] sent us an alert while I was at work saying that there'd been a stabbing and that the roads would be cordoned off. 'It's terrifying. When I walked down to the nursery I was trying to find out information about whether it was targeted or random, because you hear a lot about stabbings in London. 'The police said there had been a stabbing and that it's a very serious incident, but the danger has been contained. 'It's really shocking. To have this in an area where I'm raising a child makes me worry that I shouldn't be living somewhere like this now that we have a family.' Natasha Ennin, Southwark Council's cabinet member for community safety and neighbourhoods, said she was 'horrified and deeply saddened' by the deaths in the borough. She added that her 'heartfelt condolences' go out to the families and friends of those involved and called on anyone with information to report it. The area was cordoned off with police tape last night, with Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond of the Met saying investigations are underway to discover the full circumstances of the 'shocking incident'. She continued: 'At this point, we do not believe it to be terrorism-related and there is no further risk to the public. 'There will be a heavy police presence in the area throughout [Monday] and I would encourage anyone with information to speak with officers or contact the Met by other means.' A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: 'We were called at 1.04pm (28 July) to reports of a stabbing on Long Lane, SE1. 'We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, incident response officers, a command support vehicle and paramedics from our tactical response unit. 'We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance, which consisted of a paramedic and a doctor in a car. 'We treated four people at the scene. We took three patients to major trauma centres as a priority. Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.' Anyone who wishes to report information to the police can call 101, report online or contact @METCC on X and quote CAD3499/28.

Jury in Manchester Airport case sent out to consider verdicts
The jury in the trial of two brothers accused over assaults on police officers at Manchester Airport has been sent out to consider its verdicts. Pc Zachary Marsden, Pc Lydia Ward and Pc Ellie Cook approached Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, at a ticket machine after a report that a male fitting his description had headbutted a customer at Starbucks cafe in T2 arrivals on July 23 last year. Amaaz allegedly resisted, and his brother, Muhammad Amaad, 26, is then said to have intervened as the prosecution said they inflicted a 'high level of violence' on the Greater Manchester Police officers. The Crown say CCTV footage showed Amaaz threw 10 punches, which included one to the face of Pc Ward that knocked her to the floor, and that Amaad aimed six punches at firearms officer Pc Marsden. Amaaz is also said to have kicked Pc Marsden and twice struck fellow firearms officer Pc Cook with his elbow. He is said to have punched Pc Marsden from behind and then had hold of him before Pc Cook discharged her Taser device. Mobile phone footage of a kick and stamp by Pc Marsden as Amaaz lay on the floor was shared on social media and went viral. Amaaz and Amaad, both from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, told the court they acted in lawful self-defence, or in defence of the other. Giving evidence at Liverpool Crown Court, Amaaz said he feared the 'lunatic' male officer would 'batter him to death' and Amaad said he believed he was under attack. The defence said the officers used 'unlawful force' as they grabbed Amaaz from behind without announcing themselves. Amaaz is alleged to have assaulted Pc Marsden and Pc Ward, causing them actual bodily harm. He is also accused of the assault of emergency worker Pc Cook, and the earlier assault by beating of a member of the public, Abdulkareem Ismaeil, at a Starbucks cafe in T2 arrivals – in which he also claimed he was acting in self-defence Amaad is alleged to have assaulted Pc Marsden, causing actual bodily harm. The jury has been sent home and will resume its deliberations on Tuesday from 10.30am.
