As India puts more of the emissions-cutting biofuel ethanol in its petrol, consumers complain it damages their engines.
The government's fast-expanding ethanol programme aims to cut costly oil imports by blending petrol with ethanol, a biofuel derived from agricultural produce or organic waste that burns more cleanly than traditional gasoline.

India last month hit its target of reaching a 20% ethanol mix in petrol, known as
E20 petrol
, five years ahead of schedule.
But car reviewer Amit Khare, who reaches 15 million people every month across social media platforms, including YouTube, Meta and Instagram, criticised the fuel.
"Ethanol is a dry and corrosive fuel," Khare told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Live Events
"It can damage several parts involved in supplying fuel to the engines," he said. "Neither the government nor the petrol pumps in the country are informing users about all these issues ... Consumers are being kept in dark."
Thousands of worried drivers shared their fears in comments on a video he posted on the issue late last month.
Consumers are demanding the right to choose what they put in their cars, filling social media with complaints of lower fuel efficiency, damage to older engines and the ensuing costly repairs.
Punjab-based car critic Sunderdeep Singh said the government should make it mandatory for petrol stations to sell different blends and clearly colour-code them.
"Most consumers do not know how much ethanol is mixed in the petrol they are buying," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
MILEAGE DIP
The government said on Monday concerns over E20 fuel were unfounded. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the criticism lacked "technical foundation" and said its own reports found no major engine damage or performance loss.
The government admitted mileage might dip slightly, by between 1% and 2% in newer cars and by up to 6% in older ones, but said this could be managed with routine servicing.
Vehicle owners responded swiftly, sharing mileage numbers online and accusing the government of hiding the truth.
Khare said he tested an E20-compliant car for two months and saw a mileage drop of between 5% and 6%.
There is no publicly available data on how many of the millions of cars and motorbikes sold before 2023 are compliant with E20 fuel, but Khare estimates most of them are not.
INDIA'S BIOFUEL DRIVE
Biofuels are a key part of the Indian government's plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions and the cost of importing oil.
The policy saved India about 1.06 trillion rupees ($12.09 billion) in crude oil import costs between 2014 and 2024, according to government data, and helped to avoid 54.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in the same decade.
This is roughly the equivalent of the emissions from 12 million gasoline-powered cars a year, according to a calculator from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
But the gains come with trade-offs. India has ramped up ethanol production by diverting crops like sugarcane, maize and rice to make fuel, reducing the availability of grains for people and cattle, and shifting land away from food production.
ENGINE WARNINGS
Two of India's largest motorcycle and scooter makers
Hero MotoCorp
and
TVS Motor
, have also issued advisories about ethanol and said their vehicles made before 2023 require modifications to the fuel system to run efficiently on E20.
Shell India warned customers that they bear the risk of engine damage or warranty loss from E20 fuel.
"It is unfair of the government to push us to use higher ethanol blends when our cars are not ready," said Bangalore-based car-owner Antony Mathew.
"The least the government can do, while charging over 30% tax on a new petrol car, is to ensure compatible fuel is available in the market."

E20 petrol is safe, says govt, amid engine damage, mileage concerns

New Delhi: The government on Tuesday sought to allay concerns over the 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) hurting mileage and damaging vehicle engines, saying that the fuel in fact gave better acceleration and improved ride quality. In a statement, the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas said that vehicle owners do not find any issue related to drivability, metal compatibility and plastic compatibility while using E20 petrol. The ministry also rejected suggestions that E20 causes a 'drastic' reduction in fuel efficiency as "misplaced". "The use of E20 gives better acceleration, better ride quality and most importantly, lowered carbon emissions by approximately 30% as compared to E10 fuel. Ethanol's higher-octane number (108.5 compared to petrol's 84.4) makes Ethanol-blended fuels a valuable alternative for higher-octane requirements that is crucial for modern high-compression engines. Vehicles tuned for E20 deliver better acceleration, which is a very important factor in city driving conditions," the ministry said. Citing Brazil's experience with ethanol-blended fuel, it said that the south American nation has been successfully running on E27 for years with zero issues. The same automakers such as Toyota, Honda, Hyundai among others produce vehicles there too, the ministry said, adding that safety standards for E20 are well established through Bureau of Indian Standards specifications and Automotive Industry Standards. "In most parameters including drivability, startability, metal compatibility, plastic compatibility, there are no issues. Only in case of certain older vehicles, some rubber parts and gaskets may require replacement earlier than in case non-blended fuel was used. This replacement is inexpensive and can be easily managed during routine servicing. It may need to be done once in the lifetime of vehicle and is a simple process to be carried out at any authorized workshop," it said. Users have also complained, citing a NITI Aayog report, that ethanol-blended petrol should be cheaper than non-blended fuel, and that this cost advantage has not been passed on to the customers. The ministry said that in 2020-21, when the report of NITI Aayog was prepared, ethanol was cheaper than petrol. Over time, procurement price of ethanol has increased and now the weighted average price of ethanol is higher than the cost of refined petrol, the ministry said. "Currently, the average procurement cost of ethanol for Ethanol Supply Year 2024-25, as on 31.07.2025, is ₹ 71.32 per litre, inclusive of transportation and GST. For producing E20, OMCs (oil marketing companies) blend 20% of this procured ethanol with Motor Spirit (MS). Price of C-heavy molasses-based ethanol increased from ₹ 46.66 (ESY 2021-22) to ₹ 57.97 (ESY 2024-25)," the ministry said. "Price of Maize-based ethanol increased from ₹ 52.92 to ₹ 71.86 over the same period. Despite the increase in price of ethanol in comparison to petrol, the oil companies have not gone back on the ethanol blending mandate because the programme delivers on energy security, boosts farmers' incomes and environmental sustainability," it added. Describing the concerns as "totally baseless", the ministry said that usage of E20 fuel has no impact on the validity of insurance of vehicles in India. Automobile manufacturers continue to engage with vehicle owners to provide them any support that may be warranted to ensure optimum performance of vehicles, the ministry said. "For a vehicle owner, who believes that his/her vehicle may require further tuning or parts replacement, the entire network of authorized service stations are available to respond to such requests." Regarding moving beyond 20% ethanol blending, the ministry said that it would require careful calibration, for which extensive consultation are underway. This process has involved the same vehicle manufacturers that are already in Brazil as well as other manufacturers, entities involved in supply of feedstocks, R&D agencies, oil companies and ethanol producers. This process is yet to reach conclusion, it said. As per the current plan, the government is committed to using E20 petrol till October 2026. "Decisions for beyond 31.10.2026 will involve submission of the Report of the Inter Ministerial Committee, evaluation of its recommendations, stakeholder consultations and a considered decision of the government in this regard. That decision is yet to be taken," it said.

Punjab education official suspended after dance video in office goes viral

A block primary education officer (BPEO) from Punjab's Moga district was suspended Tuesday after a video showing him dancing with his wife inside his office went viral on social media. The Punjab government identified the officer as Devi Prasad, posted in the Baghapurana sub-division. In a statement, the education department said Prasad was suspended 'for his misconduct in viral video,' with the action taken by education secretary Anindita Mitra after minister Harjot Singh Bains intervened. An education department official from Moga, identified as Devi Prasad, has been suspended after his video of dancing with his wife inside office premises went viral. The video was reportedly uploaded on his wife's YouTube channel @IndianExpress @iepunjab @ieeducation_job — Divya Goyal (@divya5521) August 12, 2025 'Strict action will be taken against any official found violating rules or failing in their duties,' Bains said. Moga deputy commissioner Sagar Setia said a showcause notice was issued to Prasad as soon as the video surfaced. The one-minute clip, later shared widely online, shows the officer and his wife performing to the Bollywood song 'Tum roothi raho, main manata rahun, ki inn adaayon pe aur pyaar aata hai.' According to a senior Moga education department official, Prasad told authorities that the video was filmed in July while he was on election duty. He claimed he had spent a few hours in his office with his family, during which the clip was shot 'for entertainment purposes only.' He added that his wife runs a YouTube channel and the video had been uploaded there by their children before it was picked up and circulated on social media. 'We are still waiting for his written reply to the showcause notice, which is expected on Wednesday,' the official said.
