Centre comes to the rescue of chilli farmers following Kishan Reddy's plea

The Hindu08-05-2025

The Centre has accepted the plea of Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy to rush to the help of chill farmers in Telangana through a Market Intervention System (MIS) by releasing the Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) to ensure that farm produce is not sold at a distress.
In a press release, Mr. Reddy, also the Telanagna BJP president, has informed that he had alerted Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan to the distress sale in the open market, especially in the districts of Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Jogulamba Gadwal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulug, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanamkonda and Nagarkurnool where the chilli farmers have been getting low price (₹5,000 to ₹6,000 per quintal).
Mr. Reddy charged that the State government, which is expected to safeguard farmers from such exploitation, had failed to act against the middlemen. Hence, he had brought this to the notice of the Mr. Chauhan, who assured Mr. Reddy that the MIS regulations will be applied to see that the farmers are not at a financial loss and get back their cost of cultivation by covering the prevailing market price gap. The Ministry of Agriculture has stated that under the MIS scheme for the 2024–25 financial year, 1,72,135 metric tonnes (25% of Telangana's estimated total chilli production of 6,88,540 metric tonnes) will be covered.
The MIS price for chillies has been fixed at ₹10,374 per quintal. Initially, the State government is required to deposit the difference into the farmers' bank accounts, which will later be reimbursed by the Centre, with the State and Centre sharing the financial burden equally (50:50).
Only farmers who sell their produce through recognised APMC markets will be eligible for benefits under the scheme. It aligns with objectives of Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA under which MIS for horticultural crops, including chillies, has been introduced to protect farmers' incomes, added the release.

Union minister blames Kerala govt for teen's electrocution death in live wire wild boar trap, cites ‘deliberate negligence'

Kozhikode: Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav faulted state govt for the electrocution death of 15-year-old Anandu near Kalikavu in Nilambur from a live wire trap set up to capture wild boars on Saturday night. Speaking to the media in New Delhi on Monday, Yadav said that the electrocution was due to state govt's deliberate negligence. "Anandu, who was killed in electrocution from wild boar trap, is the latest in the series of deaths by electric fences in the last few years. In 2025 alone, three persons were killed in the district (Malappuram). The electrocution was the result of deliberate negligence by state govt of Kerala and the local authority claiming several innocent lives," Yadav said. To address the wild boar issue, Centre has issued guidelines to the state to implement a few measures, including giving powers to panchayats to kill the animals if they posed a threat to human life and crops, he said. On state govt's demand for amendment in Wildlife Act to enable killing of wildlife which posed threat to life and property, Yadav said Centre had already given state govt the power to kill wild boars and it is being carried out. Centre had in 2021 rejected Kerala govt's request to declare wild boar as vermin and Union minister's remarks pointed to no change in Centre's stand. Yadav said there were a total of 344 deaths in state during the last five years, of which 180 (around 60%) were due to snake bites outside forest limits. Besides that, 103 deaths were due to elephants, 35 by wildlife, nine by gaur, four by tiger and 13 by other animals, he added. Anandu had died after coming into contact with a live wire trap set for hunting wild boars at Vellakatta near Vazhikadavu in Nilambur. Police have arrested Nambyadan Vineesh, 36, of Puthiripadam, who had allegedly laid the live wire trap near a stream along the forest fringes for poaching of wild boars. He was booked under section 105 of BNS (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The investigation into the case has been handed over to district crime branch.

"Government will have to...what it has done for people?" Akhilesh Yadav on accountability of Centre, UP govt

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 9 (ANI): Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday criticised the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments, emphasizing the need for accountability after 20 years of their combined rule. Yadav demanded that the government account for its performance over the past two decades, particularly in areas such as education and employment, questioning the government's success in attracting investment and improving the state's progress. 'If we add 11 years of the Central Government and about 9 years of the Uttar Pradesh Government, then the total comes to 20 years. The government will have to give an account of 20 years in which it will tell what it has done for the people?...How far we have progressed in the field of education, how successful we have been in providing employment, the investment that we wanted to bring...,' said SP chief. This comes after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completed 11 years at the Centre and nine years of Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh. Yadav also highlighted the lack of coordination between the Central and state governments, citing visible discrepancies in ongoing schemes. As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completed 11 years at the Centre, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday demanded an account of the work done for the people by both the Central government and the Uttar Pradesh state government, saying that the schemes which were supposed to be implemented seem to indicate that there is 'no coordination between Delhi and Lucknow,' the capital of the country and the state respectively. 'The schemes that are being implemented do not seem to indicate that there is any coordination between Delhi and Lucknow. If the Prime Minister adopts a village and its picture does not change, then a question mark is raised on the Uttar Pradesh government,' the SP chief told reporters. Adding the 11 years of BJP at the Centre, and the 9 years of BJP leading the UP government, Yadav demanded an account of more than 20 years of governance on the progress done in the field of education, providing employment, and bringing in investment. Talking about specifically Uttar Pradesh, Yadav said that the state is suffering from massive unemployment and inflation while people are not getting justice for themselves. Earlier today, BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the various achievements of the government, including good governance, change in India's 'political culture,' and several bold decisions taken. 'We are completing 11 years under PM Modi's leadership. It is very difficult to confine 11 years in a press conference. The work done under PM Modi's leadership is written in the golden words because of the unimaginable and unique works. PM Modi has changed the country's politics, political culture,' Nadda said. Narendra Modi first took oath as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014, and is currently serving his third consecutive term. Last year in June, he took oath as Prime Minister on June 9 after winning elections for the third term. Marking the occasion, the Union government also released a comprehensive e-book detailing achievements across various sectors over the past 11 years. The year 2025 marks 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. (ANI)
