Polavaram-Banakacherla project DPR being readied for submission to Centre: Naidu

The Hindu05-06-2025
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu outlined the importance of the construction of the Polavaram-Banakacherla Irrigation Project with the Council of Ministers during a meeting held at the Secretariat in Amaravati on Wednesday.
Mr. Naidu said that the project would cost an estimated ₹82,000 crore, for which the State government was preparing to submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Centre. This project would provide water for drinking, irrigation and industrial needs of the drought-prone Rayalaseema.
The State government has almost finalised a financial model for the project, in coordination with the Centre.
Minister for Information and Public Relations Kolusu Parthasarathy said that the State government had proposed to raise funds for the project from different sources, including 50% of funds in the form of loans under Externally Aided Projects (EAPs), 20% from the Centre, 10% from State government and the rest 20% under Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
The Chief Minister also discussed the financial burden on the State exchequer for the welfare schemes such as Talliki Vandanam, aimed at providing annual financial assistance for schoolchildren. Mr. Naidu said that the Annadata Sukhibhavascheme is likely to be launched this month for the benefit of the farmers.
Mr. Naidu asked the Cabinet Ministers to ensure a grand success of the Yoga Day by encouraging more participants. On the other hand, the Ministers and Mr. Naidu opined to postpone the celebrations of one-year completion of the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh due to various other programmes scheduled for this month.

Naidu meets young professionals, urges vision-driven development and constituency-based planning

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu called upon the newly-appointed young professionals to work with vision, coordination, and dedication to ensure constituency-level development across Andhra Pradesh. Addressing the Swarna Andhra Vision–2047 Young Professionals' meeting at Block 5 of the Secretariat on Tuesday, the Chief Minister shared his personal journey — from growing up in a village without electricity to introducing major power sector reforms in the undivided State. The government appointed one post-graduate young professional for each Assembly constituency, tasked with working according to constituency-specific vision documents prepared under Swarna Andhra Vision–2047. The Planning Department gave them a week-long training programme before their field assignments. At the conclusion of the training, the Chief Minister interacted with all the 175 young professionals, offering guidance and setting expectations. 'This is a new approach. When I first became Chief Minister, I identified priority areas and planned accordingly. You must identify your constituency's strengths, resources, and needs. Work with local MLAs and officials, prepare concrete development plans, and explain to people both the benefits of good policies and the risks of wrong approaches. Anticipate challenges before they arise,' Mr. Naidu said Mr. Naidu noted that despite low rainfall this year, forward planning ensured reservoirs were filled and 80 per cent of the State's total water storage capacity was achieved, benefiting groundwater levels. He urged the young professionals to study and monitor welfare programmes, infrastructure works, and sectoral growth, citing ongoing major road construction, pothole repairs costing ₹1,000 crore, and advancements in green energy. 'You have a great opportunity here,' Mr. Naidu told them. 'Treat this not just as a job but a mission. Work with passion, not pressure. Coordinate with elected representatives and officials. Keep yourself updated with facts, because without accurate information, your voice won't carry weight. The sky is the limit for your ideas if you are committed to development,' he added. Referring to his own experience implementing reforms in 1995, Mr. Naidu said, 'Vision is not just about creating wealth but also about ensuring welfare for the poor. My Vision 2020 was criticised then, but it proved 100 per cent correct for Hyderabad. Similarly, the work you do now will define the future of your constituencies.' Mr. Naidu also announced a major development — the Centre has allocated a semiconductor unit to Andhra Pradesh, which he described as a 'positive milestone' that would strengthen the State's electronics ecosystem. The Planning Department formally handed appointment letters to the 175 young professionals. Finance Minister P. Keshav, P4 Foundation Vice-Chairman K. Kutumba Rao, and senior Planning Department officials attended the event.

Nagpur metro phase 2 to shift night time maintenance to new terminal stations

Nagpur: Nagpur Metro 's Phase 2 will not just expand the network but also change the way it is maintained every night. The stabilising lines and pit lines, currently located at Phase 1 terminal stations, will be shifted to the new endpoints under Phase 2, confirmed a senior MahaMetro official. This shift, officials said, will streamline operations, cut idle travel time, and help trains begin their daily service directly from the city's outermost points. Under the plan, the last stations at Kanhan, Transport Nagar, Butibori MIDC-ESR, and Hingna will be equipped with these facilities. This means that the existing Phase 1 terminals, which are at Khapri, Automotive Square, Prajapati Nagar, and Lokmanya Nagar, will no longer function as overnight hubs for regular upkeep once the second phase is commissioned. The stabilising line is used to park trains after daily service so they can cool down, undergo routine checks, and be readied for the next day, while the pit line has inspection pits that allow technicians to check undercarriages, clean, and carry out minor repairs. Officials clarified that the two existing depots — in Mihan and Hingna — will continue to handle the full operational load of both phases. No new depots are being planned, as heavy repairs and overhauls will still be carried out at the existing sites. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Invest 18K/Month Get Offer Undo "Trains requiring major work will use the same connecting lines as they do now to reach depots, avoiding the need for costly expansion. However, shifting depots would require significant land and funds, which is unnecessary given the current capacity," the official added. For Phase 2, MahaMetro will operate three-car trains in a DMC–TC–DMC configuration, each 21.94 metres long and 2.9 metres wide. A DMC–TC–DMC metro train has a powered coach with a driver's cab at each end (DMC) and an unpowered trailer coach (TC) in the middle, allowing it to run in either direction without turning around. Each train will have a total capacity of 970 passengers, including 136 seated and 834 standing. The total project cost for Phase 2 is estimated at ₹6,708 crore. Another major project under consideration is Metro Phase 3, which will connect the Sitabuldi interchange to Koradi. Public and stakeholder suggestions for this stretch are currently being accepted. Only after incorporating the feedback and finalising the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will the exact route and station details be officially announced. Once Phase 2 becomes operational, Nagpur Metro's network will extend from Kanhan in the north to Butibori MIDC in the south, and from Transport Nagar in the east to Hingna in the west. Officials said the relocation of stabilising and pit lines to these terminal stations will allow trains to be positioned closer to starting points, improving punctuality and reducing delays, particularly for early-morning and late-night services. Centre tables insolvency amendment bill, seeks to introduce creditor-initiated process

The Centre on Tuesday tabled the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha. The objective of the bill is to insert certain new provisions for effective implementation of the code.
