John Mateer's playmaking, leadership to lead Oklahoma to resurgent season
The Oklahoma Sooners made one of college football's most significant transfer portal acquisitions of the entire offseason when they signed former Washington State QB John Mateer. Since then, Mateer has earned his fair share of offseason hype and scrutiny. But with two weeks remaining until his OU debut, there's both hope and intrigue surrounding the new starter under center in Norman. In the snake pit that is the SEC, there are always question marks surrounding the quarterback position, especially for a starter who is new to the conference. Chris Low, who covers college football for ESPN, put together his biggest questions for each projected SEC starting quarterback heading into the 2025 season. For Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, his familiarity with Ben Arbuckle's offense and coming off a productive season in 2024 for Washington State, make him one of the more intriguing and dynamic passers in the SEC despite the jump in competition. On the field, he's different than the typical transfer quarterback being plugged into a new system because his offensive coordinator at Washington State, Ben Arbuckle, came with him. It's imperative that the Sooners play well around Mateer and that they protect him better than they protected the quarterback this past season. They allowed 50 sacks, which was tied for the most in the country. - Low, ESPN. Mateer has been in the spotlight plenty this offseason, as one of the projected top-tier quarterbacks in America this year. He was chosen to represent the Sooners at SEC Media Days and is already one of the trusted leaders in the locker room, despite only being on campus for a few months. Moving to the SEC from WSU will be a big jump in competition for Mateer. However, he's reiterated time and time again this offseason that he believes in the hard work he's done over the course of his career and that he also believes in the lessons he learned in 2024 as a first-time starter. Oklahoma's hopes rest squarely on Mateer's broad shoulders heading into this fall. We're about to find out if he has the goods that Sooner Nation hopes he brought with him from Pullman. Where does OU land in ESPN's preseason bowl projections?
The Oklahoma Sooners are two weeks away from kicking off their 2025 season. OU's first game will come at home against Illinois State on August 30th. The Sooners are looking to keep their 26-season streak of making a bowl game alive this year, but they hope to achieve much more than just another bowl game in 2025. Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach cover college football for ESPN, and they released their preseason bowl projections on Friday morning. Both believe that Oklahoma will make it to a 27th-straight bowl game, but will fall short of the College Football Playoff. Bonagura has the Sooners slated to play in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, which will be played in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 30th. Oklahoma's projected opponent in that game is Minnesota, out of the Big Ten. The Sooners are undefeated all-time against the Golden Gophers, with both wins coming in the late-Barry Switzer era. OU won a close 13-7 contest on the road in 1985 on its way to a national title, then dominated Minnesota 63-0 at home in 1986. Missouri beat Iowa in the 2024 edition of the Music City Bowl. Meanwhile, Schlabach has Oklahoma renewing an old conference rivalry with Baylor. He has the Sooners and the Bears facing off in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, which will be played in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 2nd. The two teams have faced off 33 total times. OU owns a 28-5 advantage in the series, but Baylor has won the last two matchups, which came in 2021 and 2022. The two teams played two thrillers in 2019, with Oklahoma ruining Baylor's undefeated season by coming back from a 28-3 deficit in Waco in the regular season to win 34-31. The rematch came in the Big 12 Championship Game, where the Sooners won in overtime 30-23, bumping the Bears out of the College Football Playoff race and securing a spot themselves. Arkansas beat Texas Tech in the 2024 edition of the Liberty Bowl. A berth in the Music City Bowl or the Liberty Bowl certainly isn't where Sooner Nation hopes this season will end up. However, the opportunity to play a historic team from the Big Ten or get some revenge against an old league foe would, at least, be a fun consolation prize if that's how 2025 turns out. Two Oklahoma Sooners nominated to AFCA Good Works Team
Oklahoma Sooners fourth-year head coach Brent Venables and senior defensive back Robert Spears-Jenning were named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team watch list on Thursday. It's the second preseason off-field recognition for Spears-Jennings, who was also named to the watch list for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy in July. According to the AFCA, "The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season." The SEC leads the way among all conferences with 89 selections since 1992. Venables was hired as OU's head coach in December of 2021 and has displayed a strong commitment to developing his players in Norman on and off the field. He's had a major focus on players excelling in the classroom and preparing them for life after college and after football. Venables also established the S.O.U.L. Mission program when he came to Oklahoma, and it is currently led by Caleb Kelly, Vince Carter, and Lorenda Holston. Spears-Jennings has made an impact on and off the field during his time as a Sooner. He is stepping into a leadership role on OU's defense with the departure of Billy Bowman to the NFL. Spears-Jennings was one of three players selected to represent the program at SEC Media Days last month, and he's looking to build on a solid season in 2024.
