Microsoft Confirms Emergency Windows Update—Your PC ‘Might Fail'

Republished on August 20 with release of emergency update. 'Reset and recovery operations on some Windows versions might fail,' Microsoft has suddenly admitted, promising 'an out-of-band update for the affected platforms to resolve this issue in the coming days.' That could be as soon as today. Windows Latest reports the company 'has warned millions of users on Windows 11 23H2/22H2 and Windows 10 against using the built-in Reset and Recovery feature.' Following the mandatory August security updates, PC users need to be careful. Microsoft says after installing the update (KB5063875), 'attempts to reset or recover the device might fail. This issue happens when users click to reset their PC, to fix problems using Windows Update or to RemoteWipe CSP.' Windows 11 24H2 is unaffected, which will be welcome, but tens of millions of Windows 10 users who are still celebrating Microsoft's u-turn on security support beyond October are impacted by this latest issue and need to await the emergency out-of-band-update. Windows Latest warns 'this is a critical issue, and Microsoft should have pulled the faulty Windows updates (KB5063875 and KB5063709).' The website reports 'an emergency patch could drop as early as the afternoon of August 19. For 23H2, Microsoft is testing KB5066189, but it's not yet live on Update Catalog or Windows Update.' This comes as reports continue to roll in that another August update fail has been corrupting PC SSDs when writing large files. All told, a worrying time for users. And just weeks after Microsoft's last broken Windows apology. 'While the feature is broken,' Windows Latest says, 'Windows does not show any warnings that the recovery process would fail, so unless you've read this article or Microsoft's documentation, you'll never know that the Reset & Recovery features are not working and proceed with the Reset.' You really shouldn't do that. Update on August 20: Microsoft has now issued an emergency out-of-band update to fix this issue, confirming 'tis issue was resolved in the out-of-band (OOB) update KB5066189. If your device is impacted by this issue, we recommend installing this out-of-band update instead of KB5063875.' The Windows-maker tells users that 'since this is a cumulative update, you do not need to apply any previous update before installing KB5066189, as it supersedes all previous updates for affected versions.' While the update addresses the specific issue, 'this update does not contain any additional security updates from those available in the August 2025 security update.' When you apply the update tyour PC will 'require a device restart. Microsoft also says that 'if your organization uses the affected platforms and hasn't yet deployed the August 2025 security update yet, we recommend you apply this OOB update instead." Windows Latest confirms that 'Today's emergency updates are rolling out via Windows Update, fix issues with 'Reset this PC' where the recovery process fails.' Those updates are as follows:

Microsoft's Bad News—Most Windows Users Must Now Upgrade

It was all going so well — but not any more. It now seems that more than half of all Windows users must now upgrade their PCs, a situation that seems to be getting worse. Given the heightened, AI-fueled threat landscape, we're in dangerous territory. In July, Microsoft hit a long-awaited milestone. After years of trying, Windows 11's market share finally overtook its soon-to-retire older sibling. For the first time, more than half of all users were on Windows 11, a number that was quickly accelerating. But then Microsoft surprised all those Windows 10 holdouts with a 12-month lifeline. Suddenly, an essentially free 12-month extension was on the table despite all the prior mood music suggesting that would not happen. I warned that this risked killing the migration to Windows 11, and that's exactly what seems to be happening. When Windows 11 hit its 54% market share milestone in July, Windows 10 dropped down to 43%. A month earlier, both versions of the OS had been on around 48%. This was great progress — finally. As recently as May, Windows 10 was still well ahead of Windows 11 by a full ten points — 53% to 43%. But as the impact of the 12-month extension kicks in, August's Statcounter data is bad news for that persistent Windows 11 campaign, which pushed the security benefits of the newer OS just as much as its frothy AI features. The data is illustrative rather than exact, but it's a solid indicator as to what's happening across the user base. As at August 20, Windows 10 has bounced back to 47% with Windows 11 dropping to 49%. And that decline could be accelerating. We've gone backwards to most Windows users still needing to upgrade. We need to see signs that such upgrades are continuing despite the ESU u-turn, otherwise October 2026 just becomes the new cliff edge. Microsoft hasn't let up on its Windows 11 security messaging, pushing users to upgrade despite the 12-month moratorium. But Windows 11 has failed to inspire Windows 10 users to move, and there's no change in that reluctance. We have even seen some promotion of the non-AI (aka more private) benefits of the older OS. Despite the u-turn, Windows 10 security updates do end on October 14 this year. To extend those, you need to use your Microsoft account to select one of the available options — details here. The hope is the swing back to Windows 10 means millions of users are taking those options, and this isn't just delaying an inevitable cliff edge.
