Why Apple, Microsoft, Pfizer and other U.S. multinational corporations set up shop in Ireland
There are 973 U.S. firms with operations in Ireland, according to the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland. Members of President Donald Trump's administration have signaled that some of that activity should return to the states. "They have all the IP for all our great tech companies and pharma companies," Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in an appearance on the All-In podcast in March. "Those things got to end." Companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Pfizer appear to have taken steps to stow intellectual property in Ireland, reducing their effective corporate income tax rates. For example, the European Commission found that in 2014, Apple's effective corporate income tax rate was below 1% in Europe. Apple and Pfizer did not respond to CNBC's request for comment for this story. Microsoft declined to comment. "If you are Apple and you are raking in the profits from your iPhone sales, you can make a lot of those profits just disappear from your taxable income," said Alexander Arnon, a senior policy analyst at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School budget model team. The Irish government opened the country's doors to multinational corporations following an economic crisis that unfurled through the 1980s. Unemployment in the country spiked and a wave of migration followed. "That was clearly a driver of the tax strategy to make it even more attractive in the '90s. It helped that Ireland became part of the EU," said Kevin Kent, transatlantic practice chair at law firm Clark Hill. Many multinationals took to strategies such as the "double Irish." The strategy relied on the transfer of intellectual property between subsidiaries based in different countries with relatively low taxes. "It was a sort of an escape valve from high-tax countries," said Adam Michel, director of tax policy at the Cato Institute. "We were actually pushing companies outside of the United States, both their headquarters and their investment." The efforts paid off in Ireland. Growth in gross domestic product per capita surpassed rates observed across the developed world. International pressure led Ireland to revise its tax codes from 2015 to 2020, effectively ending the "double Irish" strategy. In 2024, Ireland's top corporate income tax rate rose to 15%. But multinationals continue to leverage provisions in Irish law such as capital allowances for intangible assets, which can reduce their operating expenses. Many U.S. businesses continue to operate in Ireland, particularly given its educated workforce, access to European markets and strong historical relationships. Microsoft just teased its next-gen Xbox console, and nobody noticed
I feel like a broken record, but I've been writing for more than a year that the next Xbox console will be more PC-like. Now, I think Microsoft just teased its next-gen Xbox plans while announcing its partnership with Asus to bring two Xbox Ally handhelds to the market later this year. The Xbox Ally handhelds run Windows, but the Xbox team has worked with Windows engineers to boot these PC handhelds into a full-screen Xbox UI. The Windows desktop doesn't even fully load, and you use the Xbox app UI as a launcher to get to all your games (even Steam titles) and apps like Discord. While the combination of Windows and Xbox here is intriguing, it's the way that Microsoft is positioning these devices that really caught my attention. 'This is an Xbox,' said Microsoft during the reveal, clearly expanding its marketing push beyond a single console to every screen and device. It all felt like a true Xbox handheld reveal. There was even an 11-minute-long behind-the-scenes video on the Xbox Ally handhelds, filmed in a similar style to Microsoft's 'Project Scorpio' Xbox One X reveal from nearly nine years ago. 'This is a breakthrough moment for Xbox,' Carl Ledbetter, a 30-year Microsoft design veteran, says in the video. Ledbetter helped design the original IntelliMouse, the Xbox 360 Slim, the Xbox One X, and plenty of other Microsoft devices. When Ledbetter is involved, you know it's more than just a simple partner project with Asus.

Microsoft's new Copilot Vision can ‘see' your apps on Windows
Microsoft is launching Copilot Vision for Windows today, an extension of its AI assistant that lets you share your screen or apps so that Copilot can do things like coach you through using Adobe Photoshop features or analyze the photos and webpages you're looking at. 'When you choose to enable it, Copilot Vision can see what you see and talk to you about it in real time,' says the Copilot team. 'It acts as your second set of eyes, able to analyze content, help when you're lost, provide insights, and answer your questions as you go.' Microsoft first started testing Copilot Vision in Windows earlier this year, and now it's launching in the US for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. You'll need a Copilot Pro subscription, which is $20 per month, to access the feature, as it's still part of Microsoft's experimental Copilot Labs AI initiatives. Copilot Vision on Windows works within the Copilot app and can be activated through a glasses icon that lets you select a browser window or app that you want to share with the AI — much like sharing your screen or apps in a Microsoft Teams meeting. It's an opt-in experience, where you'll have to specifically share your apps for Copilot Vision to work; it's not like Recall, where it's continuously taking snapshots of your screen once it's enabled. I haven't been able to fully test Copilot Vision on Windows because Microsoft is limiting the experience to the US, but I did get a brief hands-on with it at Microsoft's 50th anniversary event in April. Once you share an app, Copilot is then able to highlight parts of your screen to guide you and help answer questions. You can also use .
