US to cooperate with Pakistan over critical minerals, hydrocarbons: Secretary of State Rubio

WASHINGTON: The US government on Wednesday stated that it is "looking forward" to strengthening its cooperation with Pakistan in areas of critical minerals and hydrocarbons, with a renewed focus on economic cooperation in other emerging sectors. Announcing its intent in a congratulatory message on Pakistan's Independence Day, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement, highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations. "On behalf of the United States, I extend our warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 14," Rubio said in the statement issued by US Department of State. He also acknowledged Pakistan's engagement with the US on key fronts, particularly counterterrorism and trade. "The United States deeply appreciates Pakistan's engagement on counterterrorism and trade. We look forward to exploring new areas of economic cooperation, including critical minerals and hydrocarbons, and fostering dynamic business partnerships which will promote a prosperous future for Americans and Pakistanis," the statement further read. The message comes at a time when Washington is actively seeking to further its ties with India's terror-harbouring neighbour. Earlier in July, US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with Pakistan, touting a joint initiative to develop oil reserves in the country and even floated the idea that "some day" Islamabad might sell oil to New Delhi. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US and Pakistan are currently in the process of selecting the oil company for the partnership. "We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!" Trump stated. Meanwhile, the Trump administration had also announced the lowest tariff rates for Pakistani goods to the US in South Asia in his new tariff plans announced earlier this month, with 19 percent imposed on Islamabad. India, on the other hand, faced a 25 percent tariff under the new plan. Trump later announced an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods to the US, bringing the total to 50 percent, due to India's continued oil purchases from Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has slammed the US's move to impose additional tariffs, calling it "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", and further noted that New Delhi would take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests." Notably, Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir visited the US for the second time in less than two months, where he reportedly said Pakistan could use nuclear weapons to take down India and "half the world" in the event of an existential threat during an event in Florida. The trip comes after a private luncheon with Trump in June, during which the Pakistan Army Chief recommended Trump's name for the Nobel Peace Prize.

'Secondary tariffs could go up…': US official warns of higher sanctions on India if Trump's talks with Putin fail; asks Europe to ‘put up or shut up'

The Donald Trump administration has warned of higher secondary tariffs on India if the talks between the US President and Russia's President Vladimir Putin don't go well in Alaska on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now India at present faces a total 50% US tariffs for its exports to America. US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% base line tariff on India and an additional 25% tariff for the latter's crude oil trade with Russia. Experts widely believe that the 25% additional tariffs for crude oil trade are a pressure tactic to get Putin to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. India and China are the two largest buyers of Russian crude oil in the world. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an interview with Bloomberg TV said, 'We put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up.' Bessent mentioned that sanctions on Russia could either be intensified or relaxed, depending on the outcome of a meeting scheduled for Friday between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin. India's crude oil trade with Russia India ranks as the third-largest oil consumer globally and has notably increased its purchase of Russian crude oil since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, largely due to the substantial discounts available. However, Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian imports, intended to penalize India's ongoing acquisition of Russian oil, poses difficulties for the country and its refining industry. Trump has demanded that India cease buying discounted Russian oil, arguing that it is "fueling the war machine" in the Ukraine conflict. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 25% secondary tariff on India's crude oil trade with Russia is set to be implemented on August 27. Experts suggest that the 21-day window allows for potential negotiations between India and the US. Historically, India's crude oil imports from Russia were minimal, with a primary dependence on Middle Eastern sources. However, this changed in 2022 due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the G7's introduction of a $60-per-barrel price cap, aimed at limiting Russian oil income while ensuring a steady global supply. India on its part has strongly opposed the US secondary tariffs. In a statement after Trump's announcement, the ministry of external affairs said, 'The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India. ' 'It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest. We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,' the MEA statement said. Bessent wants Europe to 'put up or shut up' Meanwhile, Bessent has also warned the European Union to either be ready to impose secondary tariffs on countries trading with Russia, like China, or not speak up about how Trump should look to resolve the Russia-Ukraine matter. Regardless of the meeting's outcome, Bessent emphasized the importance of European support for stricter measures. "The Europeans need to join us in these sanctions," he said to Bloomberg. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US, European nations, Japan, and other countries have imposed numerous sanctions on Russia. In July, the European Union introduced its 18th sanctions package against Russia, targeting Russian energy. 'It's put up or shut up time,' Bessent said. He expressed disappointment over the lukewarm reception he received when he proposed this idea at a Group of Seven meeting earlier this year. 'I was at the G7 meeting in Canada with President Trump and the Europeans kept talking about Senator Graham's bill to do the secondary tariffs. And I looked at all the leaders around the table, and I said, is everyone at this table willing to put a 200% tariff secondary tariff on China. And you know what, everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing,' he said. Bessent also stated that Trump intends to communicate to President Putin that every possible course of action is being considered.

Last Updated: Independence Day 2025 brings a chance to celebrate India's legacy at home, school, or office. Here are creative and meaningful ideas to honour August 15 with pride and unity. Independence Celebration Ideas: India celebrates its 75th Independence Day on August 15. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, India awoke to the light of freedom and began its tryst with destiny, overcoming 200 years of British colonial rule and exploitation. The day remembers the great sacrifice of India's leaders and freedom fighters, who waged the battle against the oppressors and paved the way to a free, secular and democratic country that continues to grow strong despite its cultural and geopolitical challenges. On August 15, Indian citizens celebrate their nation and its incredible journey with a series of patriotic gestures. Be it at home, school or their offices, Indians mark the Independence Day with a list of thoughtful ideas and activities that reflect their great sense of pride in the motherland. Here are some of the ideas on how you can join in the Independence Day celebrations this year. Flag Hoisting Ceremony On every Independence Day in India, citizens gather with their family, friends and neighbours for the flag hoisting ceremonies and sing the national anthem across the country, paying respect to the tri-colour, which stands as a symbol of India's great strength: unity in diversity. Exhibitions Exhibitions are held across the nation to celebrate the country and highlight its remarkable journey, including pre-independence and post-independence achievements. Such exhibitions feature pictures of freedom fighters, other historical photographs, indigenous products, handcrafted items, books and other important readings related to the Independence struggle. They offer an excellent opportunity for kids and youth to understand the great pains taken by our freedom fighters to give us the country we have today. Art and Craft Competition Talking of children and young adults, the art and craft competitions organised on Independence Day present another wonderful opportunity to inculcate respect and understanding towards the freedom struggle and love for the motherland in a very creative and artistic way. From making tri-colour posters to creating rangolis on the turf, involving youth in such acts helps spread awareness about the nation while enhancing their artistic skills. Functions Many schools and educational institutions organise pre-Independence Day functions, where they not only invite elders, retired army personnel, or teachers to narrate stories about the freedom struggle but also engage kids and youngsters in music and dance shows on songs that celebrate the country. In such a setting, it is easier to create interest and curiosity about India's past and participation in present works among the youth.
