Indore slips to fourth spot among best airports of India: ASQ survey

Time of India28-04-2025
Indore: Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport has slipped to the fourth position among the top airports in India during the first quarter of 2025 (Jan to March).
Indore airport was second in the ranking in the final quarter of previous year. Despite once holding the top spot, Indore airport struggled to improve its ranking in passenger amenities. With a score of 4.94, Trichy Airport secured the top position, followed by Goa in second and Kolkata in third place.
Indore airport failed to meet expectations in passenger facilities during the first quarter of this year. Lower scores across several parameters led to its compromise at the fourth position in the national ranking of best airports, according to the recently released
Airport Service Quality
(ASQ) survey report.
In the first ASQ survey report of the year, Goa, Kolkata, Indore, and Pune airports all received an identical score of 4.92. In such cases, the ranking is determined based on the Asia Pacific rankings. In the Asia Pacific region, Goa was ranked 56th, Kolkata 57th, Indore 58th, and Pune 59th, leading to Indore's fourth place in national ranking despite the equal score.
This was the second consecutive quarter where Trichy Airport held the top rank. In 2024, Indore Airport's rankings were 12th in both the first and second quarters, improving to fourth in the third quarter and then second in the final quarter. The airport management stated that continuous improvements are being made to the facilities and the impact will be visible in the upcoming quarters.
Indore airport secured the 10th rank in the annual survey for 2024, with a score of 4.92 out of 5. This ranking was influenced by its performance outside the top 10 in the initial two quarters. Subsequently, the airport enhanced its facilities, reaching the top 5 in the last two quarters of the year.

13 shops likely to open in new Trichy airport terminal

Trichy: More than a year after Airports Authority of India (AAI) commissioned the integrated terminal building (NITB) at Trichy international airport, the airport management has reinitiated the process to operationalize at least 13 shops including a restaurant in the new terminal. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This comes in the wake of the state's second busiest international airport drawing flak from flyers for limited availability of shops and lack of restaurant options despite passenger footfall constantly rising in the swanky terminal. The Rs1,112 crore building commissioned in June last year has not been successful in utilising commercial space since Dec 2024 to operate retail shops, and food and beverages outlets. While a tender floated was cancelled on technical grounds, AAI has initiated the process for a re-tender with Oct 2025 as deadline. Around 13 shops are likely to be opened by the end of the year including five commercial spaces for retail shops and a few eateries. "Lounge facility has been introduced. Simultaneously, we will complete tender formalities in three months to open shops inside the airport at the earliest," airport director Gnaneswara Rao told TOI. International passengers travelling with family have been expressing concern over lack of economical options for dinner and breakfast during their waiting time at the gates. Since meals provided by airlines are both limited and expensive, passengers have been relying on shops in the airport which often remain overcrowded. "Existing facilities for passengers are inadequate during peak hours. While additional services are planned by airlines to Mumbai, and a new direct domestic service to Delhi, AAI should focus on improving passenger amenities," A R Yogendran, a frequent flyer from Trichy, said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While domestic passenger movement in the airport is gradually improving with the airport recording historical best footfall in June, passengers want commercial outlets in domestic departure zones too since most domestic services are either in the morning or evening. The limited availability of shops had robbed Trichy airport of improved ranking in Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey conducted by Airports Council International (ACI) in 2024. Under the parameter 'availability of shops and value for money of restaurants', the airport lost ratings.

Chandigarh airport tops AAI's service quality rankings with perfect score, ranks 36th globally

1 2 Chandigarh: Chandigarh International Airport has emerged as the top performer in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) rankings among all Airports Authority of India (AAI)-operated airports across the country. It secured a perfect score of 5 on a 5-point scale and ranked 36th in the world. The rankings, compiled by the Airports Council International (ACI) for 2024, were revealed in a written reply in the Lok Sabha by Union minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol, in response to a question raised by MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy. The Chandigarh airport's stellar score reflects its excellence in passenger satisfaction, service delivery, and operational standards. It was the only AAI-managed airport to achieve the maximum ASQ score of 5.00, outperforming major airports like Chennai (4.91), Goa (4.92), and Kolkata (4.88). The average ASQ rating for AAI airports was 4.81. Despite being managed by the Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL) — a joint venture in which AAI is the majority stakeholder — the airport matched the quality levels seen at top privately operated airports managed under public-private partnership (PPP) models, which averaged a score of 4.96. In the PPP category, Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad airports also secured a perfect 5 ASQ score and were placed jointly at the top of the global rankings. Chandigarh's 36th global ranking put it ahead of larger airports like Bangalore (53rd), Jaipur (51st), Goa-Mopa (60th), and Ahmedabad (52nd), reinforcing its reputation as a high-performing regional hub. The ministry of civil aviation noted that as per the National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016, AAI-run airports handling over 1.5 million passengers annually are required to maintain an ASQ score of at least 4.5, while PPP airports must meet quality benchmarks as per their contractual obligations. Previous Awards Won by the Airport Earlier, Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (IXC) was adjudged the 'best airport' (2-5 million passengers category) in the Asia-Pacific region for 2024 by Airports Council International - Airport Service Quality (ACI-ASQ). This was the sixth time the airport won the prestigious award, which includes a total of 95 airports globally. The airport got a 5/5 rating in 'overall satisfaction' and experience. The airport also won the 'best hygiene measures by region' award in 2021-22 and 2020-21, and the best environment and ambience by size awards in 2019-20 and 2018-19. It received India's Best Airport Award under the 25 million passenger categories at the Wings India awards for excellence in the aviation sector by the ministry of civil aviation and Ficci. The Swachhata Award for the year 2019 was won for being the second cleanest and safest airport of AAI. It ranked 1st for the 'clean & safe airport' award out of 22 AAI airports conducted by the quality council inspection team. It won the First in India Swachhta Award presented by AAI for the year 2018-19. Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL) is the only company out of ten companies under the ministry of civil aviation (MoCA) graded with an excellent rating in compliance with guidelines on corporate governance, acknowledged by the department of public enterprises (DPE) from 2018 to 2022 in succession.

Pune: The passenger service quality at Pune International Airport has shown notable improvement, according to a recent survey conducted jointly by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Airport Council International's Airport Service Quality (ACI-ASQ) programme. (Photo by Shankar Narayan/HT PHOTO) The ASQ survey, which was published online on Monday, evaluates the quality of 31 passenger-centric services across airports worldwide, based on feedback collected directly from travellers. At Pune Airport, this includes regular audits and input from passengers regarding services, amenities and infrastructure. The survey considers a variety of criteria such as the condition and cleanliness of restrooms, hygiene standards, availability and quality of food and beverage outlets, retail shopping options, staff behaviour, security procedures, access and entry issues, flight services, response time to complaints, and other passenger support services. The report noted that the opening of the new terminal has resulted in a significant increase in flight operations, catering to both domestic and international travellers. This has elevated Pune Airport's status among India's busiest airports, and enhanced services benefiting the growing number of passengers. To maintain and improve these service standards, several measures have been initiated. Pune Airport director Santosh Dhoke said, 'We have begun implementing various strategies to provide high-quality services to passengers. Regular meetings are held with staff across all departments to review and improve service quality. Special attention is given during peak hours or in case of flight delays, and airline staff are instructed to ensure that waiting passengers receive proper assistance.' Ananya Mehta, a frequent flyer, said that she has been flying through Pune Airport regularly for the past five years, and the difference in the last few months has been remarkable. 'The new terminal is more spacious, the signage is clearer, and the overall cleanliness has improved a lot. Even the staff seem more responsive and courteous. On my last trip, there was a slight flight delay, but the airline staff at the waiting area were proactive in providing updates and refreshments, which wasn't the case earlier. It definitely feels more like a world-class airport now,' she said.
