'I feel horrible': UCSD professor Nisarg Shah confronted over alleged child predator activity; phone seized, not arrested
A University of California San Diego associate professor is under investigation after being confronted on video in an alleged online child predator sting. The video, widely circulated on social media, shows Nisarg Shah being accused of attempting to meet someone he believed to be a 14-year-old boy for sex.
Shah, who teaches in the Aiiso Yufeng Li family department of chemical and nano engineering at UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering, was confronted on Saturday, inside a Pavilions grocery store in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood.
The sting was coordinated by online activists using Instagram handles @timjohnson.458 and @vans_against_predators, with the video watermarked by the group "People v Preds,' reported San Diego Ville.

Activist Tim Johnson, who claims to have exposed more than 500 suspected predators, confronted Shah over sexually explicit messages allegedly exchanged on the dating app Grindr. Screenshots shared by the group show Shah identifying himself as 28 years old and continuing to chat after the decoy disclosed they were 'bout to be 15.'
During the encounter, Shah expresses deep remorse. 'I feel horrible, the worst I've ever felt,' he says.

Two San Diego Police Department patrol cars arrived during the confrontation. An officer is seen in the video informing the activists that Shah would not be arrested at the time, stating he was 'not allowed to arrest him' under the circumstances.
Shah's phone was seized, and evidence from the sting was turned over to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Although a photo shows Shah in handcuffs, he was reportedly released at the scene.
When contacted by San Diego Ville, Shah responded through his attorney, 'These are wrongful allegations and while I would have been willing to share my account, my attorney will not let me do so but he would be happy to speak with you.'
In response to inquiries, SDPD Lt Travis Easter issued a statement, saying, 'We are aware of the incident and our ICAC unit is actively investigating it. There have not been any charges made as of yet.
UC San Diego also released a statement, 'We have been made aware of the allegations against Nisarg J Shah. We will cooperate with all law enforcement agencies as needed during any investigation. The health, well-being and safety of our campus community members is our top priority.
All allegations of sexual harassment and sexual violence are taken very seriously.'
Shah is a specialist in immunoengineering and nanoscale materials. He earned his PhD from MIT and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University before joining UC San Diego, where he currently leads a research lab and teaches.
The incident has sparked widespread backlash online, with many calling on the university to investigate and take disciplinary action.

HC warns Nagpur officials of legal action on stray dog menace
Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court issued a stern warning to civic and police officials over persistent stray dog menace, declaring it will now hold "every responsible officer from top to bottom personally liable for failures in enforcement". During Wednesday's hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by activist Vijay Talewar, the bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Vrushali Joshi said for over two decades, the court was passing orders on this issue without tangible results. "We will not keep issuing reminders. If there is failure in implementation, legal action will follow," the court observed. The bench ordered Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to submit a complete list of all officers responsible for stray dog control, stating notices will be sent to each of them. "They will be given an opportunity to respond, and accountability will be fixed individually," the court said. The petitioner's counsel, senior advocate Firdos Mirza, argued that slapping notices on municipal commissioners have proved ineffective. "Every officer in the chain needs to be made answerable," he told the court. The judges referred to earlier directions that police issue notifications under Section 44 of the Maharashtra Police Act, and NMC take action against those feeding stray dogs in public spaces — both of which, they noted, were not complied with. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The T-shirt you've been waiting for—comfort and style in one lininco Undo Mirza sought contempt proceedings against the municipal and police commissioners, but the court noted that in earlier cases, unconditional apologies shielded them from consequences. "This time, once notices are served, action will follow," the bench warned. The court even hinted at possible contempt proceedings against the state's principal secretary (urban development) if failures persist, emphasising the matter will not be closed without "something concrete" being achieved. The next hearing is scheduled next week, with liberty granted to the petitioner's counsel to submit further recommendations for effective implementation. "This will be your last complaint," the bench told Talewar, signalling its intent to end decades of inaction. # Key Observations (Oral) by the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court 20 years of court orders on stray dog control failed to yield results All responsible officers, from top to bottom, will now be held personally accountable NMC must submit a list of every officer involved in implementation Notices will be issued individually, with an opportunity for response before action Orders under Section 44 of Maharashtra Police Act remain unimplemented Civic body yet to act against those feeding stray dogs in public spaces Prior unconditional apologies allowed officials to avoid consequences. Gangster's aide held for firing at student after robbery bid
Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch on Wednesday claimed to have detected the case of firing on a 20-year-old student on August 1 when he was manning his father's grocery store in Pimpri market, following the arrest of Ravindra Ghare (40) — an associate of a Mumbai gangster. Ghare, a shooter of the gangster with at least 25 criminal cases against him, had decided to commit a robbery because he was in financial trouble. He had opened fire at the student, Bhavesh Kukarani, because he resisted the suspect's bid to snatch his gold chain. The student survived the incident. Joint commissioner of police, Pimpri Chinchwad, Shashikant Mahavarkar said, "A crime branch team led by senior police inspector Vijay Dhamal recovered Kukarani's gold chain, a country-made pistol, 11 cartridges and two stolen motorcycles from Ghare's possession." The Pimpri Chinchwad commissioner of police (CP), Vinoy Kumar Choubey, had fanned 10 teams to arrest the suspect. Inspector Dhamal said, "Our team started checking footage of CCTV cameras on the route the accused used to escape after the incident." He said the scrutiny of the CCTV cameras' footage revealed that Ghare changed motorcycles thrice while driving away from the spot. "Our team, comprising assistant police inspectors Dattatreya Guling, Pandurang Devkate, and constables Somnath More and Mohsin Attar traced the suspect's trail to Chikhali," Dhamal said. Dhamal said the area where the suspect lived was overcrowded. "We identified Ghare with the help of his body structure. We took him into custody on August 6. During the custodial interrogation, he admitted to his involvement in the firing in Pimpri," Dhamal said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
