Akmal Nasir to file formal protest over Johor Baru loss in PKR polls
Akmal, who is also deputy minister of energy transition and water transformation, was defeated by Johor Youth Chief Mohamad Taufiq Ismail, in what many saw as a surprise upset.
Official figures show Akmal garnered 587 votes to Taufiq's 709.
He said the move to contest the result came after Get Out The Voters (GOTV) operations lead Stanley Tan Boon Heng — who oversaw voting on the day — filed a statutory declaration confirming that at least 949 votes had gone to Akmal.
'These figures aren't just GOTV tallies — they're backed by documented proof of support,' he wrote on Facebook.
'The numbers are supported by certified Form 14s from polling station heads, voter lists with signed acknowledgements, and photographic evidence.'
He added: 'I'll be submitting an official protest to JPP. Until then, I urge everyone to remain calm as we follow the proper process.'
Akmal also questioned the credibility of the outcome, calling the Johor Baru results an example of a 'headless body' scenario.
'Ten of the elected division committee members are from my team,' he said.
'An unusual outcome also occurred in the youth wing, where only the chief was defeated while the deputy and all other committee members were elected.
'In the Women's wing, the chief and deputy lost while my team's candidates for vice-chief and committee roles won.'
Akmal joins several other PKR figures planning to contest the results, including communications director Lee Chean Chung (Petaling Jaya), deputy information chief Chua Wei Kiat (Selayang), and Sungai Siput MP Kesavan Subramaniam, who lost narrowly in his division.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who lost by 68 votes to actor-director Datuk Afdlin Shauki as the Setiawangsa division chief, also hinted at taking the formal route to raise concerns.

Mustapha rebuked for calling GRS a liability to PH
Jasnih KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): Pantai Dalit Assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya has criticised Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud for describing Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) as a liability to Pakatan Harapan (PH). Jasnih, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Pantai Dalit Division chief, said Mustapha's statement was baseless and potentially damaging to the unity of government coalition partners. 'I am not sure what the basis, motive or objective is for him to label GRS as a liability to PH,' he said in a Facebook post on Sunday. He noted that he has many friends in PKR and PH, but such remarks are rare. He urged Mustapha to be more cautious when making public statements, stressing that reckless comments could backfire. 'Do not get carried away when giving statements, especially those that only highlight weaknesses and damage yourself. Most importantly, do not be a spoiler,' Jasnih said. He also warned that excessive confidence could lead to arrogance, which would undermine a leader's credibility. 'Overconfidence leads to arrogance… and remember, no one is irreplaceable,' he said. Jasnih further advised that differing views should be resolved internally through party channels and leadership structures, instead of being aired publicly in a way that fuels unnecessary polemics. 'If that is what you truly feel, discuss it properly with your leader. InshaAllah, if it is for the best… then we just carry it out,' he said. He reiterated that political stability in Sabah must remain a top priority, as it is closely tied to development initiatives and the wellbeing of the people under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) policy. Meanwhile, PKR Papar division's women's movement has called for a more mature and responsible political culture, urging leaders to prioritise the people's welfare over rhetoric. Its chief, Shakila Ismail, was responding to remarks by Gagasan Rakyat Youth Kawang Division against Mustapha. Shakila stressed that Mustapha's views should be regarded as part of a healthy and responsible political discourse, not as a political attack. 'Datuk Mustapha's perspective is part of a healthy political dialogue. It should not be seen as an attack, but as a reminder that political cooperation in Sabah must truly benefit the people, especially women, children, and rural communities,' she said. She also cautioned against politicising the recent tragedy involving the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, a 13-year-old student from Papar. 'As leaders, the tragedy of the late Zara Qairina should never be used as a political tool. Instead, all Malaysians and the authorities must unite to uphold justice and implement institutional reforms to prevent such cases from happening again,' she said. According to her, political leaders must show exemplary conduct by engaging in respectful, solution-focused politics rather than finger-pointing. 'We must lead by example, practising politics with wisdom and maturity, focusing on solutions and not rhetoric or blame. The people will judge leaders based on their actions, honesty, and sincerity in defending them,' she said. In her statement, Shakila also outlined three key calls from the movement: prioritising welfare and safety with no compromise in protecting students, women and children; strengthening political cooperation to ensure stability and development in Sabah while safeguarding state rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63); and amplifying Sabah's voice at the national level through the Unity Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'PKR Sabah women's movement remains principled yet firm. Politics must continue to serve as a platform to defend the people, not as a battleground that undermines public confidence,' she emphasised.

Warisan candidates must sign contract to prevent defections

Shafie cited the court ruling involving former PKR minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, who was ordered to pay compensation for leaving her party, saying this should serve as a precedent. Shafie also confirmed Warisan would defend its seat in Tanjung Kapur and field candidates in the other 72 state constituencies. Regarding development, he disclosed plans to allocate 600ha in Kudat for a new port facility that would include ship maintenance, shipbuilding, and fuel supply services. Police sexual crimes unit needs more funds, says Nurul Izzah

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar wants the government to increase funding for Bukit Aman's sexual, women and child investigations division (D11) under the 2026 federal budget. She said the recent death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah and the attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli's son highlighted the urgent need to prioritise the safety of children. 'Protecting our children is no longer a fringe issue. It demands serious attention,' the former Permatang Pauh MP said in a Facebook post. Nurul Izzah said the D11 unit, made up mostly of female officers, operated under tight constraints despite handling a growing number of disturbing cases of abuse, some involving infants as young as six months old. She said she paid the unit a visit recently, where she found that officers only had four computers, all of which were outdated, at their disposal. Nurul Izzah added that the officers often have to review distressing evidence, including material circulated on the dark web. 'These officers are not ordinary people. Some are mothers and grandmothers, yet they endure hours of going through heartbreaking footage to bring perpetrators to justice.' Nurul Izzah said she managed to purchase 10 new computers for the D11 with the support of donors, as well as refurbish the unit's child-friendly interview room. 'However, more support is needed. I urge the government to provide specific funding for equipment, tools and personnel. 'We cannot let them fight this battle alone,' she said, warning that failure to do so could lead to more children becoming victims of abuse. In November, the statistics department revealed that the number of reported sexual offences involving children rose by 26.5% in 2023 compared with the year before. It said 1,567 cases of child sexual offences were recorded in 2023, up from 1,239 in 2022. Physical sexual assault against children rose by 21.1% at 1,389 cases in 2023, while 91 cases of non-physical sexual assault and 67 cases involving child pornography offences were also recorded in the same year.
