National Sports Policy Will Ensure All-Round Development Of Indian Sports: PM Narendra Modi
Last Updated: PM Modi stressed sports' importance for India's growth, launching the National Sports Policy to aid sports from schools to the Olympics, with new funding and stricter rules. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called sports a key part of India's path to becoming a developed nation. He said the new National Sports Policy (NSP) will support sports development from the smallest schools to the elite Olympics. In his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort, the PM noted that the country has changed a lot from the days when sports were not seen as a good career choice. 'Sports is an essential aspect of development and I am happy, that from the time when parents used to scoff at children spending time in sports, we have reached a point where it has changed. Now, parents are happy if children take interest in sports," Modi said, with guests like double Olympic-medallist shooter Manu Bhaker applauding. 'I consider it a good omen. It fills me with pride to see sports finding a space in Indian families. It is good for India's future," he added. The NSP, approved by the cabinet on July 1, aims to hold administrators accountable and establish processes for ethical practices, fair play, and healthy competition in sports. It includes creating national agencies and inter-ministerial committees for quick action and problem resolution. The policy also suggests new funding methods like 'Adopt an Athlete', 'Adopt a District', 'Adopt a Venue', 'One Corporate-One Sport', and 'One PSU-One State', where possible. 'To promote sports, we have come up with the National Sports Policy after several decades. It would ensure the development of sports, from school to the Olympics. We will develop an ecosystem, whether it is coaching, fitness or infrastructure. We will create an ecosystem that penetrates the farthest corner of the country," the PM declared. Soon after the NSP, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya pushed for and got the National Sports Governance Bill passed in Parliament. This bill provides stricter regulations for National Sports Federations and a clear dispute resolution system. India's performance at the Olympics has been lacking, with the 2021 Tokyo Games yielding seven medals, including one gold, being its best result so far. The Prime Minister also stressed that fitness is a crucial part of sports culture and that the country needs to tackle obesity by reducing oil consumption. 'When I talk of fitness and sports, I want to talk about obesity, which is a huge problem for the country. It is predicted that every third person is expected to be obese in future, we have to reduce consumption of oil to win this war on obesity," he said. Delhi launches ‘Helmet Wearing Consequences' campaign to boost road safety
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched the state government's ' Helmet Wearing Consequences ' campaign at Connaught Place, calling on citizens to treat road safety and civic responsibility as acts of patriotism, TNN reports. The campaign, aimed at reducing road accidents, will promote helmet use and highlight the risks of neglecting it. 'On the eve of Independence Day, let us pledge to follow road safety rules and keep our city clean,' Gupta said, stressing that soldiers defend the nation through sacrifice, while citizens can show patriotism by obeying traffic norms and fulfilling civic duties. She urged youth to lead by example, noting that 'our life belongs not only to us but to family, society, and nation. Every action should consider its impact on society's welfare.' Transport minister Pankaj Singh linked helmet use to personal safety, recalling how one saved him from serious injury in college. 'Your safety is in your hands. Wearing a helmet proves responsibility towards yourself and loved ones,' he said. MP Bansuri Swaraj encouraged young riders to make helmets a fashion statement 'just like any other accessory.' Chief secretary Dharmendra was also present at the launch. Singh urged citizens to make Delhi a model city for safety and discipline.

CM expands financial powers of administrative secretaries, HoDs
New Delhi: In a move to accelerate "good governance", chief minister Rekha Gupta has enhanced the financial powers of administrative secretaries and heads of all Delhi govt departments, officials said on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to CM, administrative secretaries will now be able to directly procure all IT-related items, and undertake repairs, rentals, and maintenance, in addition to purchasing equipment and other related material, without procedural delays. "CM highlighted that this is the first revision in officers' financial powers in nearly six years, with the last amendment made on Aug 7, 2019," CM's office said in a statement, adding that technological progress, rising costs, and the introduction of new welfare-oriented schemes have brought about significant changes in the execution of projects. "To build a 'Developed Delhi' and to ensure that the benefits of govt schemes reach the people promptly, her budget this year has risen to Rs 1 lakh crore, compared to Rs 54,800 crore at the time of the last revision. Therefore, the decision has been taken to make effective use of the allocated budget, prevent unnecessary delays in departmental work, speed up the execution of projects, and ensure their timely completion by increasing the financial powers of senior officers," the statement read. In special cases, Gupta added, administrative secretaries have been granted complete financial powers. These include the appointment of individual consultants, consultancies, professionals, project management units, and other specialists; the procurement, repair, rental, and maintenance of all IT-related items; the hiring of human resources; the purchase of equipment; and the acquisition of new vehicles in place of condemned ones. It is our responsibility to ensure that public funds are used at the right time, in the right place, and for the right purpose. This decision will not only strengthen good governance but will also make service delivery to the public more effective and timely, while eliminating delays caused by unnecessary inter-departmental movement of files," she said.
