Can Pierre Poilievre's youth appeal be a game-changer in Canada's 2025 election?

Conservative leader
Pierre Poilievre
is appealing to a demographic that has historically been elusive and difficult to catch for his party, the young voters. At his Calgary rally on Friday(April 25), he called for the 'biggest voter turnout in Canadian history" to bring changes he believes the country desperately needs.

Standing before a crowd of thousands in Calgary, he asked, "Are you going to reach out to those who have lost hope and show them that voting for change offers a chance for a better future?"
This is seen as a bold step as young Canadians traditionally have supported left-wing parties, with the Liberals enjoying strong support. But the recent polling indicates a significant shift, where the survey shows that there is a major shift in young voters aged 18-34 who now back the Conservatives.

A major reason behind this shift is the economic issues, as young Canadians are grappling with high housing costs, inflation, and job insecurity. Trump's restrictive policies, tariffs, and global uncertainty add to this pressure.
Poilievre's focus on these concerns resonates with a generation that feels left behind by the status quo. His promises to reduce government intervention and cut taxes are particularly appealing to those who feel burdened by economic challenges.
Live Events
His appeals are not limited to a policy shift but also an identity shift. According to analysts, he has successfully positioned the
Conservative Party
as a champion of individual freedom and economic opportunity.
David Coletto, founder and CEO of the Ottawa-based polling and market research firm Abacus Data, believes that Poilievre requires an exceptionally high voter turnout. Coletto pointed out that
Justin Trudeau
's success in 2015 was partly due to his ability to win over young voters.
"He needs to find a way to inspire younger, less consistent, and more unlikely voters, individuals who may not have participated in past elections," Coletto remarked.
Conservatives are likely hoping the polls are underestimating their support, as happened in the previous two elections. However, he noted that even if the polls are off by one or two percentage points, it probably won't alter the result of this year's election.
"The only variable left is to out-hustle and out-turnout your competitors," Coletto emphasized.
It becomes important to know that despite winning the popular vote in both the 2021 and 2019 elections, the Conservatives ultimately lost those races.
Geneviève Tellier, a political science professor, suggests that Poilievre's focus should shift to swing regions like Ontario if he hopes to win more seats.
Poilievre's focus on these concerns resonates with a generation that feels left behind. With housing prices skyrocketing and job opportunities feeling out of reach, young Canadians find themselves increasingly disillusioned with the status quo.
However, the problem lies in the fact that young people have been less likely to vote, and Poilievre's success hinges on mobilizing this demographic due to which his campaign is focusing on outreach efforts and encouraging young Canadians to make their voices heard at the polls.

Akhil Gogoi launches ‘Jatiya Jagaran Yatra' from Rang Ghar with eye on '26 polls

1 2 Dibrugarh: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday launched his party's ambitious "Jatiya Jagaran Yatra" from the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar town, marking what he described as the beginning of his party's campaign for the 2026 Assam assembly elections. Speaking to reporters, Gogoi declared the yatra as the "poll bugle for 2026 Assam assembly election" and outlined his vision for a transformed Assam under Raijor Dal's leadership. "This Yatra is meant to build a new Assam and unite the people of the state. Our aim is to defeat the BJP and throw them into the Brahmaputra. I appeal to everyone to join this movement for change," Gogoi said. The Yatra will initially focus on Sivasagar district for 15 days before proceeding to Sadiya in Tinsukia district and returning to Sivasagar, covering significant portions of upper Assam. At the heart of Gogoi's campaign lies a comprehensive 10-point agenda that addresses some of Assam's most contentious political issues. The most significant proposal involves granting ST status to six communities — Tai Ahoms, Mottocks, Koch Rajbongshis, Sooteas, Morans, and Tea Tribes. "We will also strive for ST status for three more communities of Assam, namely Kalita, Nath-Jogi and Modahi. This will automatically convert Assam into a tribal state, which will permanently protect the rights of the indigenous people of Assam," Gogoi said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo On the sensitive issue of illegal migration, Gogoi promised to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) recommendations without religious discrimination. "Illegal migrants, whether they are Hindu, Muslims, Christians, or from any other community, will be deported, while legal citizens will be given proper identification cards," he stated. The Raijor Dal leader also pledged to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which promises constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity, and heritage of the Assamese people. Additionally, he proposed securing Article 371A status for Assam, similar to Nagaland's special constitutional provisions. "Article 371A will provide Assam with the necessary protections for our unique cultural and social practices, including customary laws and land ownership rights," Gogoi said. The party's economic agenda includes ambitious plans for agricultural and industrial development. Gogoi promised 100% irrigation facilities for farmers across the state and the establishment of industrial units in every village to generate employment opportunities. Assembly passes amendment keeping Greater Bengaluru Authority out of municipal affairs

Bengaluru: The Greater Bengaluru Governance (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which clarifies that the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will not interfere in the functioning of municipal corporations in line with the 74th amendment of the Constitution, was passed in the assembly after much debate. Deputy chief minister and Bengaluru development minister DK Shivakumar , who piloted the bill Monday, said the bill was only to ensure "clarity and prevent disputes in future". "Though the Bill was passed earlier, some people had filed petitions in court," said Shivakumar. "We have now made it clear in this bill that GBA will not interfere in matters of municipal corporations that come under the 74th amendment of the Constitution." "A PIL was filed alleging municipalities were being brought under govt control," he said. "Although the court did not uphold the PIL, we moved this amendment to avoid confusion in future. Municipalities will function independently and will not be under govt control." He went on to say that mayors and corporators elected directly by the people will have complete authority. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Find your car's value online in minutes. Reiterating his stand, Shivakumar said: "I do not want others to indulge in politics over Bengaluru's future, nor will I. Municipalities will have powers of taxation, financial autonomy, reservation, elections. The 74th amendment is fully protected. Congress will never allow Rajiv Gandhi's historic amendments to be diluted." Insisting that his heart beats for local bodies, Shivakumar said: "When I was urban development minister, we ensured the Belur Declaration along with then revenue minister MY Ghorpade. At that time, each panchayat received only Rs 1 lakh in grants. During SM Krishna's tenure, this was raised to Rs 5 lakh, and later 27 departments were brought under panchayats to empower them." On Satish Reddy's (BJP) claim that certain villages in their constituencies were not included, Shivakumar said: "If we include villages now, panchayat members would automatically become municipal corporators, which could invite objections. Therefore, we will first conduct elections within existing municipal limits, and later, after discussions with all of you, we will decide on expanding boundaries." Highlighting financial imbalances between different zones, Shivakumar said: "Mahadevapura collects the highest tax revenues, whereas other parts of Bengaluru do not generate as much. But one municipality's money cannot be transferred to another — if we do so, it would violate the 74th amendment again. In such cases, the govt must provide financial support. We have only brought this amendment for the welfare of municipalities. Our purpose is to ensure that when other parties form the govt in the future, they cannot misuse it to bring municipalities under govt control." 'Trump used trade in a very powerful way as leverage': White House again claims US President ended India-Pak conflict

White House said Trump used trade as leverage to end the conflict between India and Pakistan. The White House again claimed US President Donald Trump ended the conflict between India and Pakistan -- despite repeated rejection from New Delhi. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt detailed the conflicts that President Trump resolved in the past few months as she spoke at great length about Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and also the European leaders. 'We've seen it with the end of the conflict between India and Pakistan, which could have resulted in a nuclear war if we had not had a President who believed in the strength and the leverage that comes with the job of being the President of the United States of America,' Leavitt said, detailing the seven global conflicts. Leavitt was asked which peace deals Trump is most proud of. Leavitt said she would have to ask President Trump for the answer but she's certain that Trump is proud of each one of them. After mentioning Armenia-Azerbaijan and Rwanda and the Republic of Congo, the White House spokesperson mentioned India and Pakistan and said, "President Trump used trade in a powerful way as a leverage to bring that conflict to an end." Leavitt made another mention of India as she spoke about tariffs. 'The President has put tremendous public pressure to bring this war to a close. He has taken actions as you seen sanctions on India and other actions as well. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He has made himself very clear that he wants to see this war end,' she added. Trump imposed a 50 per cent tariff on India to be effective from August 27. A US team was set to visit India for negotiations, but it reportedly deferred the visit. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent also accused India of 'profiteering' by reselling Russian oil. In an interview with CNBC, Bessent said India is reselling and making a profit. "This is what I would call the Indian arbitrage -- buying cheap Russian oil, reselling it as product. They'sve made $16 billion in excess profits -- some of the richest families in India," he said.
