Halle Berry's Cannes red carpet outfit banned over strict new dress code
Halle Berry has revealed that she had to make a last-minute 'pivot' when it came to her outfit for the Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony as it disobeyed the controversial new dress code.
As Cannes Film Festival's new dress code made waves yesterday, it has left many A-list celebs scrambling for new outfits to abide. And Halle Berry, who is on the festival's coveted jury this year, has admitted she had to make a last-minute switch-up when it came to her outfit for Tuesday evening's red carpet opening ceremony.
In an update to the dress code this week, the festival banned full nudity and 'voluminous' outfits, writing on its official charter: 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted."
Talking at the Cannes press conference on Tuesday, alongside fellow jury member and succession actor Jeremy Strong, Halle admitted she was amongst those slightly blindsided by the new rules. "I had an amazing dress and I cannot wear it because the train is too big, so I, of course I'm going to follow the rules," she said with a sigh.
"But, I had to make a pivot. But the nudity part I think is, probably, also a good rule," added Halle.
The rule change comes after Julia Fox bared all in a see-through corset during the 2023 edition of the Cannes festival, alongside many others making some eyebrow-raising red carpet appearances over the years. While it's also hot off the heels of a string of controversial appearances from Bianca Censori, who wore a naked dress - leaving little to the imagination - to the 2025 Oscars, after several bizarre outfit choices.
With a new outfit in toe, Halle is expected to walk the red carpet alongside the likes of Tom Cruise and Naomi Harris for the opening ceremony, which kicks off the ceremony and features a screening of new musical comedy film Leave One Day.
Robert De Niro will also be awarded the the honorary Palme d'Or award for lifetime achievement at the ceremony.
Later in the week, Tom Cruise will take to the red carpet for the highly-anticipated premiere of his new Mission Impossible movie, while others such as Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum and Bella Hadid are spending time on the Cote d'azur for the two-week long festival.
For those looking to celeb-spot, hotels such as the Martinez, Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc and the Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, are all housing the A-list this year for the festival.
You can also head to hotspots such as the Carlton Cannes beach, Lucia Cannes and Copal Beach to try your luck at some parties across the week. While you may not make it inside, those A-Listers have to stumble out at some point...

Mariska Hargitay is on a quest to reclaim her family story in 'My Mom Jayne' trailer
Mariska Hargitay has helped people share their stories for years on TV and through her foundation, and now, she wants to share hers. The trailer for 'My Mom Jayne,' the 'Law & Order: SVU' star's documentary about her late mother, Jayne Mansfield, aired exclusively June 3 on "TODAY." The HBO film, which premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival, is also the first project under Hargitay's newly launched production company, Mighty Entertainment. Hargitay narrates the trailer, which opens with black-and-white footage of Mansfield before jumping to video of Hargitay opening boxes and sorting through memorabilia about her mom. 'I've spent my whole life distancing myself from my mother, Jayne Mansfield, the sex symbol,' she says, as racy images of Mansfield pop up on screen. Old news clips and photos document the Hollywood bombshell's rise to fame. 'I use my pinup-type publicity to get my foot in the door,' Mansfield says in one of the videos. As an image of Olivia Benson — Hargitay's famous 'SVU' character — appears, the Emmy winner explains that her mother's path to stardom made her want to carve a much different career for herself in the entertainment industry. 'But I want to understand her now, ' Hargitay says. She then reflects on losing her parents, saying she has no memories of her mom, who died in a car accident in 1967 when Hargitay was 3 years old. Hargitay and two of her brothers, Zoltan and Mickey Jr., were in the car at the time of the accident. Their father, Hungarian bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay, raised them and died in 2006. Hargitay says she's never talked to her siblings, including the oldest — Jayne Marie, whom Mansfield had with her high school boyfriend turned husband at 17 — about their experiences with their mom. The trailer shows Hargitay, who also serves as director of the film, respectively settling her brothers and sister in for interviews. 'Anything you ask, you know I'm there for you,' Mickey Jr. says. 'You have all these memories, and I'm envious of that,' Hargitay expresses in another scene to Jayne Marie, who was 16 when Mansfield died. 'In the beginning, I had her to myself,' Jayne Marie says over archival video footage of her with her mom. 'She'd take me everywhere.' Mansfield, who spoke to the press often and especially loved her fans, took her kids almost everywhere she went on the road. 'When you're a kid, you don't know anything else,' Mickey Jr. says. 'This is life.' Zoltan says in the trailer that their mother's playful on-camera persona, which included a put-on, breathy voice, was 'actually a character.' 'The public pays to see me a certain way,' Mansfield says in an old clip. 'I looked the other way because I knew she was really smart,' Mickey Jr. says of his mom, who was fluent in multiple languages and played violin and piano. 'At home, she was just Jayne,' Jayne Marie says. 'I've heard things that are really ugly,' Hargitay says. While Pitt and Diddy were likely to have run in the same circles and attended the same parties over the years, little is known about whether the pair shared a close friendship. Aside from Diddy attending the Cannes premiere of Pitt's film Killing Them Softly in 2012, there is not much information online about their relationship. Despite not testifying, Pitt's name did come up when Diddy's former assistant who is testifying as 'Mia' took the stand. She told the court she once saw Diddy assault his ex-girlfriend of 10 years, Cassie Ventura, at the premiere of Killing them Softly at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. Mia said Cassie and Diddy were in the cinema talking when Diddy gritted his teeth and started 'digging his nails into her arms'. How French women over 50 wear blusher
Every May, the red carpet appearances at Cannes Film Festival get starrier and starrier: from Tom Cruise's controversially swishy hair to Andie MacDowell's tailored-to-perfection suit, there are often bolder choices for dressing on le rouge carpet in the French Riviera than at the Golden Globes or Oscars. Then there are the appearances from public figures such as France's former first lady Carla Bruni, who never fails to look impeccably well put together and glamorous, much like the Emily in Paris actor Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (her colour-blocking Saint Laurent dress for the premiere of Nouvelle Vague was a lesson in elegant, show-stopping style). But much besides the eye-catching outfits and accessories, there's something about how French women wear make-up that really stands out. 'It's style before statement with French women,' the 69-year-old make-up artist Terry de Gunzburg, who holidays with the likes of French actor Isabelle Huppert, tells me. (If there's one woman who knows about the enduring appeal and the certain je ne sais quoi of French beauty, it's de Gunzburg – her beauty range By Terry is sold at Space NK.) Much of this comes down to how they wear blusher. 'French women do wear blush a little differently,' she explains. 'At the heart of the French look is an intimate relationship with skin – the complexion tends to look skin-like, healthy, radiant, and a little 'undone'.' French women, she tells me, 'wear blush not just to add colour, but to revive life in the complexion, as if they've just been on a bracing walk along the Seine'. From Bruni's raspberry blush to Leroy-Beaulieu's soft coral, there are some shades that are flattering on all skin tones. The trick to mastering 'French' blush is to pick a colour that has a touch of pink in it, says de Gunzburg. 'I always think that pinks add dimension and light into the skin,' she explains. 'In my formulas, even when I'm making the perfect beige eyeshadow, I'll ensure there's a touch of pink in there because it just brings more life into the colour.' Don't know which shade to pick? 'Pinch your cheek and see what colour it brings out, because that will be the colour that suits you most accurately,' she says. Failing that, there is a fancier way to check, according to the make-up artist. 'A glass of Champagne can also bring out a flush that's naturally very you.' I expect this is how they check at Cannes. Then there's the texture; while the past five years have seen a big trend for creamy, liquid or glossy blushers, powder blushers are back on the agenda. 'With the right powder formula, you can achieve the classic Parisian look with even less effort,' says de Gunzburg. Rather than looking cakey or flat on the skin like the powder blushers you may have used in the 1980s or 1990s, powder formulas nowadays are much finer and smoother. Ditch the brush, too. 'You might find that applying blush with a brush is giving too much of a precise shape – I don't like to be able to see where the blush starts and finishes,' says de Gunzburg. The French look, apparently, isn't as sculpted as that. Instead, using your fingers to tap the powder into the apples of the cheeks and gently across the bridge of the nose looks more 'alive'. Finally, don't skip setting spray; it may seem like an unnecessary step for a make-up look that's designed to appear effortless, but, says de Gunzburg, 'for French women, this is less about keeping things in place, and more about fusing everything together and softening the edges. Just a few quick spritzes really add to the fresh, flushed radiance of the French woman.' Three favourites...
