Strictly's Dianne Buswell admits 'it's been tough' as she addresses heartbreaking news
Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswell has opened up about heartbreaking news she received this week, admitting it's been "tough". The Australian, who joined the hit BBC programme in 2017 as a pro dancer and won last year with Chris McCausland, recently revealed her grandfather had died. Sharing her grief on the Winning Isn't Everything podcast with fellow Strictly winner Chris McCausland, she revealed: "He only celebrated his 99th birthday two weeks ago. I don't think he wanted to reach 100."
Her grandad, affectionately nicknamed Buzz, took immense pride in her triumphant Strictly journey, once referring to Chris as "the blind fellow". She told Chris: "He couldn't believe that I taught the blind fella how to dance."
After her win, Dianne cherished moments back home, replaying show highlights with Buzz. Reflecting on those precious times, she said: "We watched some of the dances together. He got very emotional about it. He loved it. And before I left, he said to me, 'You know, I'm pretty much done'."
Although the family held onto hope for Buzz's centenary, his health declined rapidly after his birthday. Dianne explained his final days saw him growing weary and being placed on supplemental oxygen. "He just began to get really tired and they put like a little oxygen mask on him," she said.

"He was still in his nursing home. So he didn't go to hospital or anything, but he was getting weaker by the day. But he called me a couple of days ago and he was still quite conscious.
"And that was the last time, because my dad told me this morning that, he sadly passed away at about ten something this morning in Australian time. which is really sad, but he's now with his wife, Mary, who passed away from Alzheimer's."
"He loved her so, so much. They were inseparable. He did everything for her. They used to go travelling together. She was a surf life saver, he was a bike rider. They were a very fit and very active couple. So I'm sure he would be up there with her now having a little dance."
Dancing is very much a family affair for Dianne. She and her brother Andrew were Western Australian Open Adult New Vogue champions for 2008 and 2010 before she went on to appear on Aussie TV's So You Think You Can Dance – a spinoff of the US show of the same name presented by Cat Deeley.
Dianne went on to appear on the Australian version of Strictly, Dancing with the Stars, before making the fateful move to the UK that saw her meeting now-partner Joe Sugg in the 2018 series.

She revealed in the podcast that she had been missing her family back in Australia, and had every started making plans to bring her parents over for a surprise holiday, but she's now glad she didn't.
Dianne said: "Something in my head was telling me 'don't book it just yet.' So I kept putting it off...I had this weird feeling."
"And then last week when my dad was saying 'Pops is not really in a great way' And I thought 'there was my reason.'" She revealed that conversing with her dad after he broke the sad news was challenging, confessing: "I don't know really how to act or what to do in situations like this. I feel like I'm just trying to console my dad over phone, but I didn't really know what to say or do. It's really tough."

She told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "Us women have fought to be so independent and strong and do our own thing, that it might send confusing messaging to them, like, 'Can I approach or can I not?' So, I totally understand why they're being hesitant sometimes, but I'm open and ready to be approached... "I might meet somebody today. You get up and you never know who you might meet. I've got to look nice... I'm always ready and open." The 36-year-old beauty is hoping to find someone to settle down and have children with, but that wouldn't mean giving up her career. She said: "I would like to have kids with someone who I believe could be a good father but I've got nieces I can spend my energy on right now, or some of my friends' children, like Janette[Manrara]. "Seeing how she does everything and is a mother as well is really inspiring. It just shows that you can do it all if you put your mind to it." Katya has considered freezing her eggs to preserve her fertility, but is ultimately hopeful she can have a family "naturally". She said: "I've spoken to women who have done it... I didn't hear about it until two years ago, which is quite surprising really. However, I still have faith in meeting someone naturally. That would be lovely." The Russian dancer was previously married to fellow Strictly pro Neil Jones for six years until 2019, and while he has moved on and had daughter Havana with fiancee Chyna Mills, he and Katya are still close. Article continues below She said: "We're absolutely still on good terms. We knew each other since we were 18 and started dancing. We lived a life together... it was me and him against the world, chasing our dreams. "We were the only people there for each other so of course there is a much more profound connection there. You can't just throw that away."

(Image: INSTAGRAM) Christine McGuinness prefers dating women as she can have a "deeper connection". The 37-year-old TV star – who split from Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness, 57, in 2022 – revealed she wants her next serious relationship to be with a woman as she doesn't want someone who is "playing games". She told The Sun newspaper: "I describe my sexuality as being a free spirit. Now I'm enjoying spending time with women. I can just have a deeper connection with a woman. I like someone who knows what they want and isn't playing games." Christine – who has three children with Paddy – has only dated women for the past three years, with previous partners reported to include rapper, model and DJ Roxxxan, and singer Chelcee Grimes. However, she refuses to put a label on her sexuality – which she said Paddy has always been aware of. She said: "My ex-husband knew about it from when we first met and was fine with it." Meanwhile, Christine briefly joined the latest series of E4's Celebs Go Dating but pulled out soon after filming began. Dating expert Anna Williamson told The Sun: "It wasn't the right time for Christine to continue her journey in the agency. Article continues below "I think this is the absolute beauty of what the Celebrity Dating agency does - yes, it's a TV show, but it's also real. "And for Christine it was very brave that she wanted to dip her toe back into the world of dating and throughout the process of us getting to know her, she realised that perhaps this actually wasn't quite the right time for her to be doing that and took a great deal of confidence and bravery inside to recognise and actually now is not the right time."
